Today we know many virtuoso drummers. Eric Moore, Thomas Lang, Gergo Borlai, Chris Coleman, Jojo Mayer, Larnell Lewis, etc. The tips of their sticks move between multiple tom-toms at breakneck speeds. However, I feel a certain "catch" or "resistance" as if the gears are meshing tightly together, with Virgil Donati’s drumming that goes beyond mere smoothness, lightness or fluidity. To use an automotive analogy, a high-powered engine named "Virgil Donati" has very strong torque, but such an engine is hard to find elsewhere.

Had the day off I walked downstairs practiced almost 3 hours, I thought I sounded perfect even playing along with some Holdsworth/Donati songs then...... the algorithm gods sent me this video I watched, I marched back downstairs to practice waaaaaaay more! Peace from Detroit MI.

I wish that he played for a mainstream artist, just so the whole world got to see him in action. And by see him I mean pay attention to him, just for a moment. Imagine Donati live on Dave Matthew’s Dreaming Tree (Carter is obviously brilliant, no argument). Or the outtro to Pearl Jams Black while Vedder hits those intense vocal highs. None of you will agree, but, he’s just a phenomenal drummer and musician.
