I built my dream aquarium fish room out of the unfinished portion of my basement. It’s 15 by 10 feet, with mold-resistant drywall covered in FRP. Most of the controller systems are mounted on the wall or controller board, and I have an iPad for accessing my apps and aquarium log.
My custom-built acrylic sump contains my filter socks, UV sterilizers, two-part dosers, protein skimmer, refugium, heaters and cooling fans. I use passive GFO and carbon in media bags when I need them. Circulation is supplied by two Vectra L2 pumps.
Other features include:
- mini fridge for fish food and additives
- dehumidifier
- 90-gallon quarantine system
- utility sink with industrial spray faucet
- large saltwater mixing station & RODI reservoir

Wow a whole room built for the behind the scenes of the tank? You must have a wonderful wife and amazing brother who helped frame it out! ;)

Awesome setup and great video! Safe to say most of us loving seeing people's filtration systems and or dedicated rooms. We did the same for our 1000 Gallon setup. A filter room is the way to go! NEW SUBSCRIBER!!!

I kept Marine fish successfully back in the 1990's. Watching your video, is a reminder of how far things have progressed in the hobby. 3:41 One part of the video that caught my attention was the Mandarin fish. Back in the 1990's it was always advised not to purchase such fish as they were nearly impossible to keep due to their eating habits. I see in the video you mention something called 'phytoplankton' to feed the copepod' on which the Mandarin fish feeds. I almost feel tempted to get back into the hobby now in 2024, and own some Mandarin fish, now that i know they can be fed properly! ^_^

You've got the bug! I bet you'd find it really interesting to contrast where the hobby is now compared to 30 years ago. You've got a unique perspective. The mandarins are so beautiful -- and can be kept in pairs I believe. They do better in somewhat larger, well-established systems with lots of microfauna on which to graze. They're finicky and don't always survive, but if you get a good one they can live for years. Glad you liked the video!

I could only dream of something like this. Although I try to keep as simple a system as possible and as little equipment as possible, it would be nice to have an area to house everything so it is easily accessible. Great job.

Stunning work. Subscribed. Couple questions for you if you don't mind? Firstly, what does the electrical cost look like at the end of the month for everything? Lastly, what do you do for work? (apart from the aquarium being a job in itself lol). I feel like it takes a certain mind to reach a level of excellence like this.
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 6 ай бұрын
Oh wow, thank you so much. I actually don't know what the electrical cost is -- probably a fair amount. I installed the tank shortly after moving into this house so I don't have any pre-aquarium data to compare it to. Also we have solar panels so it's even harder to know the true power usage. I probably don't want to know... I'm a physician in my day job. Do you have a tank?

It’s looking really good, I’ve been working on something similar myself for the last year. Can I ask what you used to get the rubber cove base to stick to the FRP? The adhesive I got doesn’t adhere well to it. I bought some contact cement to try next, but I’d appreciate any tips.

PS if you’re like me you’re constantly looking for things to improve or make better, but you’ve designed a masterpiece- make sure take a moment to admire your hard work because I know exactly how much time you’ve spent on this and it’s really impressive.

Thank you so very much - I’d love to see what you’re working on. If you make a video of your fish room send it to me here in the comments, will you? I got the base molding to stick with heavy duty liquid nails - fairly thick application of the stuff. I think I make these videos because sharing all of it is the best way for me to appreciate what I’ve built. I hope you enjoy it!

Amazing tank and what a set up! Question, I'm a cabinet maker and want to make my own stand for a tank this size. Did your friend just use plywood/solid wood for the cabinet? (no metal bracing/frame)? Typically the heaviest thing we have to worry about is a granite counter top, not 2,400LB+ of water/glass haha
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 5 ай бұрын
Oh, there's definitely a steel stand underneath the tank. Check out my earliest videos, before we installed the canopy and stand enclosure. I personally would be apprehensive about trusting wood not to shift/warp (especially in a saltwater environment, over the course of many years, etc). The stand I used is here: www.dfwaquarium.com/Products/Metal-Support-Stand/Metal-Support-Stands.html

This is insane! How long did it take you to learn everything you needed to know to create this entire system?
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Honestly I just learned little by little, typically as I needed to solve some problem that came up. There's lots of great information out there, much of which right here on KZfaq. I recommend the channels from Bulk Reef Supply, but there are so many others -- I have them listed on my channel's home page. Thanks for your support!

exellent set up were is your corals.....or is this a whole new project
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 6 ай бұрын
Not quite new, but I have to portion my free time very carefully -- I don't put in as many trips to the LFS as I'd like. And once the system was stabilized I lost nearly 6 months of coral growth to several dwarf angels that were eating everything. So I've really only had corals in the system for ~9 months...

Hi Mate , love the video do you have the plans for the sump?
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I think I largely have the sump the way I want/need it. Eventually I’ll switch from filter socks to felt rollers, and from two-part to a calcium reactor - but I think those are a few years down the road. Do you have an aquarium yourself?
@AtlasDrakon
@AtlasDrakon 6 ай бұрын
I do but about set up a new one and was interested in the dimensions but also that it is acrylic. Was it hard to put together
@BaconCove
@BaconCove 6 ай бұрын
@@AtlasDrakon The sump is 3 x 6 feet by 12 inches tall. The water level is around 10 inches if I remember correctly. I didn't find building it particularly challenging, but I made some mistakes in the design -- wasn't strong enough structurally and some areas were bowing. I had to go back and reinforce it after the tank was operating, which was challenging. There are plenty of videos on welding acrylic out there -- I found the ones from @thekingofdiy particularly helpful. Let me know if you have other questions!
