Great information! I often dip my hands in my tanks for maintenance and often notice an unusual amount of dryness and discoloration of the nail beds. Working with many Hand Surgeons over the years have led me to believe the tank water was causing this. I’ve seen advanced cases of tenosynovitis and it’s nasty. Nowadays I use gloves worn up to my elbows.

You should look into maxilla deformation on your daughter & get that corrected asap or she'll have lifelong complications. It's very likely diet & thumb-sucking related (I also had issues as a kid) & it's easier to deal with as a kid before the bones permanently set as an adult. Encourage eating food that's hard to chew like carrots, jerky, steak & whatnot so the kids will have a strong, healthy smile & no sinus issues.

One of my coworkers got this. We clean the bottom of ships in the marina and he cut his hand on the bottom on one. We're usually under water most of the day.

I've heard that second to aquarium keepers, the most common place people get the infection is cleaning barnacles off the bottoms of ships. I like to watch videos of people doing what you do -- you probably think it's boring, but I think it's super cool!

I have a fresh water tank. I always check for cuts or sores on my hands and arms before putting them in the water. If there’s anything, I will avoid touching the water. Then I sanitize my arms and hands really well before washing them very well. I want to avoid any weird diseases or infections.

Very cool to know about, thanks for the info. Glad your doing well. I'm surprised you had never mentioned to any doctor that you constantly have your hands in aquariums. Maybe a good thing for everyone else to know is mention they are in the hobby or professional when seeing doctors. Again, glad your doing well, that's a crazy surgery to go through. Reminds me of getting cellulitis, but worse!

I just recently got into the aquarium hobby, like less than a year ago. Your video came up randomly in my feed, I watched it, and thought, well, that's interesting, but it's super uncommon and definitely won't happen to me, since I'm always wearing gloves when I'm working with my tanks. A few weeks back I accidentally sliced my finger open. A few days later I have these red bumps crawling up my arm, then both arms. I think to myself, well, this seems familiar, but no way, can't be. So I go see a doctor. Apparently can be. Now I'm on Doxycycline. Thanks for making this video.

I don't keep fish anymore but when I did, I had like 17 tanks in my basement. Each set of tanks had their own giant yellow dish gloves. Fuck dipping my raw hands in there.

Thanks for the info and hope your recovery went well. I'm wondering if you can contract this from fresh water aquariums as well?

Yes, it's more common in salt water environments but lives in fresh water as well.

Nope -- typing with it now. Just can't fully extent my fingers fully when my wrist is bent back. The tendons are a bit scarred. It's a minor thing and it could have been so much worse. I'm grateful every day it got treated when it did!

Prednisone and other steroids and lifesavers. My hearing was restored AND my nasal passage a few years later. They really do supercharge the body's immune/healing or whatever the hell it is. I am grateful as hell. If anybody reading this losing hearing one day..run for steroids.
@ManuFortis3 ай бұрын
Just something to note. You shouldn't say the dominant hand is infected, but rather 'the limb exposed to the environment/water/etc'. The only reason is simply that while it may seem like common sense what you meant by that, there are some people who will take you very literally, and so because they used their non-dominant hand that one time; won't think anything of it. I know, I know, pedantic. But seriously, this will be the difference for some ninny out there.

I'm not sure -- it would have to be freeze-dried mysis, which I've never used. Might be worth looking on BRS...

This is so crazy for me to hear because I went through this too and I’ve never heard of anyone else getting it. I caught it early thankfully. It took about 8 different doctors over a couple months until I found a hand surgeon who asked the same thing. “Do you have fish tanks?” After that I went to an infectious disease doctor and then I got sliced open a little bit to get it tested. I went on the tuberculosis meds and some other one for about 6 months. I hadn’t had any losses recently before but I had gotten a mudskipper a couple months before the cyst things started showing up so I assume I got the infection from him. I just got off my antibiotics a few months ago. Yours seemed bigger than mine. I had about 15 small ones on my hand tendons and then 3 on my wrist and 3 big ones on my forearm tendons.
@BaconCove2 ай бұрын
Wow, glad you got treated early. I've got about 2 months left of my antibiotic regimen -- looking forward to putting that behind me. Hope you're fully recovered. Thanks for leaving a comment!
