This is giving me a lot of ideas to entertain mine. This weekend, I’m getting them a toy xylophone so they can have chicken music for chicken concerts ...... or not.......well, maybe for me to listen. I love watching mine play and interact with each other and me. I have a large tree near their run with a lawn chair and little table for my ice tea.

I never thought of putting hardware cloth on my cleaning fork, it is actualy a muck rake for horses but I needed something for sifting the pine shavings, but your idea of a hardware cloth on it is a good idea, will be trying it. that run is really nice, if I was going to make my chickens live in the run with very little if any free range I would of made it three times bigger, that way they get lots of movement. still very nice.

What an awesome home for your chickens! I would LOVE to have something like that for my quail! BTW, meal worms are VERY easy to propagate and not messy. Also, and this is just my theory, but it seems the worms have more nutrients if they are still alive (fresh). My quail go nuts for both the worms and the little beetles that they turn into. All I do is put some turkey starter (good source of protein), powdered egg shell (for calcium), oat meal, and/or dog food in a bucket with a lid, put it in a warm place (75°-85°F is best) and let nature take its course. I will also throw in raw potato for moisture but that can cause mold. I've actually discovered by accident that they will thrive without any moisture at all and only wood to eat when I left some meal worms in a terrarium in my classroom over the summer and returned to find it swarming with worms and beetles. You could even raise them right in the coop in the warmer months, if you are in a northern climate. I'd love to hear if you try it! :)

A run should allow for a minimum of 10 square feet for each chicken. So a run that is 11x11 is only large enough for about 10 hens. I have 10 chickens and 8 ducks and our run is about 18x40. The more space the better for health reasons, to prevent illness and pecking issues.

Perhaps an electric portable fence would be a good option so they can get out and forage when you are home? Might be a great option to get the horse out more to graze and keep from being bored. I like your run because it looks easy to winterize by throwing up some greenhouse plastic around the outside. Great use of your space.

Melissa Looman If you get the chance, would love to see some more video updates. You know things are getting bad when a person gets bored with KZfaq and is begging for more interesting videos! Hahahahaha. No, but seriously, I think my problem is I am limited by the things I find interesting. LOL I love homesteading lifestyle. I recently saw on KZfaq where someone uses sand with sweet PDZ under the roosts. Every day or two they use a long handled cat litter scoop to remove the poop. This is what I plan to do when the young chicks leave the grow up coop. Amazon carries a terrific long handled metal scoop.

I did not bury posts. Leveled ground and layed PT 6x6 on cement blocks. Fabric cloth was attached under 6x6’s and extended 1 foot beyond outside of 6x6’s. I constructed 4 panels and secured them together and and to the 6x6’s. Used a 2x6 nailer on the building to secure roof rafters to the barn. I have send 2x4 for rafters and strapping lates across to secure metal roofing. Then attached fabric cloth. I have photos I will try to show you.
