Recently I built a chicken coop for my birds. And today Im showing you how I built a run for my coop. This is an easy addition to my coop. My birds mostly roam free on my property. But in the rare chance that they can't, I'm glad to have a little outdoor space for them that is protected.

Thank u so much for this tutorial, I was minding my business at home and I looked out to see a weasel in my run, I have never seen one in my life let alone in my garden. They are adorable but I know they are dangerous to hens. We only have three hens which are kept in a big chicken wire run. I sprinted out to chase it off and it squeezed through the wire. All hens were fine luckily but I am very panicked now and your run seems like a perfect idea to keep them out.

Somehow I stumbled onto this video, then you said "leftover from my shop build" and I went down that rabbit hole. I have to say I am thankful for you showing each and every step of that build in detail, including mistakes and things you wish you had done differently. I am planning to build a house in a similar fashion to your shop, and I was hung up on pole barn construction and how to handle the interior wall framing etc. Seeing your shop build made me more comfortable going with traditional framing, and your series really answered a lot of questions for me. I'm going to build a 40x100 building with half being the home and half being garage/shop. Thanks again for a fantastic series on your shop build.

April! I found you while searching for how to build a chicken run. Yours was my very favorite so we're building it right now. We're not very fast because we only have a short amount of daylight every night when my husband gets home from work but we'll get there eventually! I love how it's coming together. It's a bit bigger than what you did and I'm just so thankful for the inspiration. We're making the run extend to the other side of our coop as well so we have to get creative on the section behind the coop which butts up to a concrete wall. I hope it works out well! I've been watching your other videos and I'm a huge fan now!😍 I have several of your projects on my list of things I'd love to make now, including that wood storage shed! And holy crap that elevated deck is amazing!❤️

Thank you so so much for this video!! It is well explained and shown and very nice to watch and listen to. And just what I needed, too. I have a dream of making a chicken coop by myself but no one believes I can do it and think I am crazy. I worked in an office for 15 years and did bridal make up on Saturdays but in my soul I am your type of girl and I finally get to explore it and learn to do things DIY way as we have a house and a garden now. First thing was a composter from wooden pallets and hopefully this chicken coop will follow soon. Your video is most helpful and gives me confidence that I can do it with such source of inspirations and instructions. I really love it 😍

Great, I'm just about to build my second run so came here for a bit of revision and this was just what I needed, straightforward and easy to follow. I put paving slabs down on under my first one to keep the rats out but that was expensive and a lot of work so i like the idea of the buried mesh, much simpler and will hopefully work. All the best

Well done! You might want to consider growing some kind of deciduous vine on the outside of your run to give your birds some shade in the summer, especially on the south and west sides. When I was in Austin, I grew muscadine grapes up the sides and across the roof of my run - but it was 10' tall and 8' wide, so the grapes wouldn't take over. The chickens enjoyed any fruit that fell, especially if it had fermented.(Yeah, birds love to get drunk, lol.) Pole beans, passion flower, bougainvillea, or trumpet flower would also work.

We tried growing climbing vines on the side of our chicken run - the chickens ate the vines. 😂 At least it was probably tasty!
@kirstenwhitworth8079
@kirstenwhitworth8079 4 жыл бұрын
@@curiousfirely Yes, I put the vines on the outside of the run AND I had half moon hardware cloth cages around anything within beak-range. Protecting plants with cages is SOP for me because my flocks have always acted like feathered piranhas when it comes to just about anything green. (They especially love to eat chilies & peppers, the lil stinkers.) If you are on Facebook, see facebook.com/kirsten.whitworth.1/media_set?set=a.10216895232671093&type=3 There are several pictures of the plant labels I made for those muscadines (and fruit trees), but the labels are mounted on the hardware cloth "plant protectors".

When you set up the feeder tube to the outside of the run, I suggest you use a full cap over the pipe and sand it so it is easily lifted off so rain water will shed off it and not go down the pipe. A screw with a small chain attached to the cap and to the pipe will allow the cap to dangle without getting lost.

This is beautiful, great job! I’m so tempted to take on the project for myself but feeling super intimidated. I would have to rent tools. And a truck to get the materials to my home. Im worried I maybe in over my head. Would you be able to tell me an estimate on what the materials alone would cost if I purchased your plans and built it myself.

You can buy a pre made coop from Tractor Supply or another supply store. Then assemble it once you’re home. As for the run, there are a million ways to create one. It doesn’t have to be this expensive or elaborate. However your main concern is to keep the chickens safe. Check out my channel and see my coop. It’s run is made from a dog kennel with the fourth wall down on the ground for predator protection. Keep in mind my coop was designed for someone on a budget, so it’s not quite as pretty as hers is!

I just discovered this vlog/resource. You're my new idol. I have ha husband who worked as a carpenter many years before becoming a firefighter and now is often too busy and uninspired to make me everything I'd like and need. We have a coop and run he built for me.(well built, but he didn't confer with me on specs all the way through the building process) we ha 11 chickens,10 hens, 1 rooster. We have predators and my risk tolerance is low for chicken loss.I'd love to build a brand new, way larger that would incorporate many of the fantastic features he built but with my added specifications. I'd love to do it with minimal help from him. A bigger run would make the need for free ranging less crucial and limited to when we can supervise but allow them better room in the run. Building this myself would be a confidence boost as well. I'm going to measure my existing run to see how it compares to your small and large run. Offhand, I think it's in between your two run sizes and I want one bigger and wider.keep up the great work.I really enjoyed your video.

April, the Woodworker Store has an attachment for vacuum up the floor wherein you sweep the dirt over to a funnel. that funnel would be a perfect way to pour feed into your feeder system, much faster than scoups.

Sure, it will work but they also make lattice that's premade for skirting around outdoor buildings. I would look into both and decide which will be cheaper/easier for you to install.
