I grew up listening to KNX in the 90s, when my dad and I would travel from our home in Lancaster to Downtown LA. In early March 2020, I was on Easter Island, and around 3am, I was out driving around in a rental car, looking for a convenience store for some place to buy some water or something. Sadly, there were none to be found at that hour. So, I drove my rental car down to the beach and scanned across the AM radio and I was able to identify 3 stations; 690 out of Tijuana, KNX 1070, and 1090 out of San Diego. That was really cool, and somewhat emotional, to catch during my near 2 year stint living in Chile, being far away and hearing echoes from home. As the former owner of WEGG 710 AM (now WKOO) in Eastern North Carolina, AM radio holds a special place in my heart. Thanks for the tour. Loved the video.

Glad you enjoyed it! As we start opening up a bit, we’ll be able to get some more facility tours.

I was still 9 years old when I listened to KNX. I get that sentimentality when I think back on 1988. I also recall listening to it on one of my sisters' little AM/FM walkman.

During my Navy days, I picked up KNX off the coast of Guam. I know folks who DX'd it easily in upstate NY on a cold winter night.

Hi, thanks for posting! I grew up in New York (Long Island) and could hear KNX After midnight (EST) on Sundays when most stations were off the air. Now I live in South Florida and can pick up KNX at times between 3:00 and 4:30 AM (EST), but it's a tough catch!

Thank you for the video tour. KNX 1070 was my favorite radio station back when I lived in the LA market. Now living in the Portland Oregon market where news/talk CBS-affiliate KXL 750 KHz AM switched to 101.1 MHz FM AM broadcast just ain't what it used to be. Back in early 1960s, I made a crystal set to receive CBS-affiliate KFMB 540 KHz AM (before the channel went back to Mexico). And I remember as a child visiting the transmitter of KGB 760 KHz . Seemed like 15-20 tall chrome and glass racks for 50KW. and six towers because of weird nighttime pattern. Also fascinating is the transmitter site video for KFI 640 KHz. And all the history with World War 2 and Conelrad, etc. They now have an ultra-efficient (90%) Nautel digital 50 KW transmitter.
@TheBroadcastEngineer2 жыл бұрын
There’s a plan to do one for KFI as well! Lots of moving parts to try to coordinate.
@ApartmentKing669 ай бұрын
KFMB used to be at 540? I always thought they were on 760. And I always thought KGB was at 1360. I suppose NARBA put them where they're now at.

Can you make a video where you hold something against an AM tower to see if it will play the broadcast? Or explain how that can happen?
@TheBroadcastEngineer3 ай бұрын
That’s a super dangerous thing to do. I’ve seen that video and cringed at that. Basically the RF is electricity, but in that case it’s arcing. And since it is amplitude modulation you can hear it when something shorts on a tower. I’ll have an example of that on a fence in the next video.
@allen_steel1236 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if KNX is the older station come up KWG 1230 in Stockton california, shows to be the second oldest license west of the Mississippi River.

Interesting presentation and I enjoyed it, but I can't help wondering....why do radio engineers and hams always look like such dinosaurs? :-)
@TheBroadcastEngineer Жыл бұрын
It’s a field that is not able to fill its ranks. Kids are growing up with the digital side of things and not getting the physical skills needed. It’s a big problem in the industry. Managers are also a huge part of that. “Why should I pay you if everything is working?” It bites some stations in the backside eventually.

Tomorrow (12-08-2021) would be the 100th Anniversary of their sign-on. Today, they erased "AM 1070" from their branding, citing how terrible AM is, and how modern and cool FM is. It's now known as "News 97.1". I just listened to the celebratory broadcast....on 1070 Khz, here in Midvale, Utah. That's 588 miles from their tower, and was just as good as any FM station. Full-quieting during pauses in their audio, as they went in and out of newscasts. Now, if they are operating with MDCL, that would be even more amazing!!!
@TheBroadcastEngineer2 жыл бұрын
I missed the changeover today. Indeed, a station like this has amazing coverage. However, you have cars like Teslas that don't have an AM radio.
@richard7crowley2 жыл бұрын
Tesla probably gave up on AM reception due to RFI from the motor control circuits and wiring.
