The Palace of Versailles or Château de Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789, under Louis XVI. The palace is now a historical monument and UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2017 the Palace of Versailles received 7,700,000 visitors, making it the second-most visited monument in the Île-de-France region, just behind the Louvre and ahead of the Eiffel Tower.

Yeah, perhaps more architects should go to versailles too, maybe that way they could understand that modern architecture is a sad joke that has no respect whatsoever towards it's surroundings and is decharacterizing cities and consequently countries, that way we could get fewer architects that design boxes for a living...

But the those workmen who built the Versailles palace also got jobs and Francs for livelihood, the architect who was appointed by King Louis XIV also earned in bucks and he indeed did a good job.But most important was that the paintings of so many painters over the years ,like Leonardo da Vinci's " Mona Lisa" Michelangelo, Raphael can be preserved plus the statues of so many Kings of France viz.Louis XIV can be seen by the public, the grandeur of this monument cannot be disregarded even though it was built by the king for his mistress which now the republic of France has turned into a museum.So even though many things of the past can be based on blood, sweat,and tears if they are have helped to bring about renaissance and have a 20 century or 21 century to realise the classicism of the past in comparison of the crudity of the present,and also help the sublimation of mind of men and women of modern times it means no wrong. Because this can be compared to the world famous " Taj Mahal" of India.Which all great Prime ministers or Presidents who come to India visit as well as the public of the world . Even the Pyramids, Macchu - Picchu ,the easter islands statues, also the terra cotta army discovered underground also needed the sweat ,blood, tears of so many chinese labourers, the Ankor cat and Ankor thom temple of Hinduism, the Khajuraho temples,the Buddhists vicars or monasteries of Ajanta and Ellora, th beautiful monasteries in the kingdom of Tibet all required nothing but sweat and tears of those who were not in power today also the three gorges dam the Panama canal, the Aswam dam across the Nile, the Hoover dam.Todays U.S. mighty Manhattan in which the empire state building is, the estewhile two trade towers, Petronas in Malaysia, the huge skyscrapers of Singapore, China, Taiwan, India Bombay, Chicago, are 20th century's examples of tears and sweat and the many tanks, warships, war planes of 21st century's modern empires are also blood ,sweat and tears. The University Campuses built for education like the University at Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire are example of the same work and the Roman roads built for Caesar's cry Vidi, Vini ,Vinci or I came, I saw ,I conquered is also a testimonial to the same sob story. And ultimately Caesar is betrayed by Brutus.

@JC de Frontenac In some way your observation is quite right, but a cause which is involving headaches, such as because the Roman's had spread their empire to very nook and corner they had to face the contants attrition with Gauls and Hannibal crossed Alps with his elephants to be a constant presence of danger.
@anuradhainamdar8967
@anuradhainamdar8967 3 жыл бұрын
@JC de Frontenac I meant that if great works are achieved by anyone, for example the Roman's ambition for expansion of their empire then if that ambition remains modest it is understandable, but if it becomes a source of headaches to themselves itself than they become a butt of jokes and hilarious sarcasm as we have seen in the comics of Asterix- Obelixs ( how the Gauls handle the Roman's),Even if we take the example of the so called Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, he carried out Napoleonic wars at a great cost to his own people, even killing his wife Josephine and ended up lonely and mesirable in St.Helena gaurded by a bevy of British soldiers. I think he should have consolidated his empire in France and ruled justly.That was enough.

Minimalism is not supposed to be pretty, it's supposed to be minimalist, precisely lol Function, not beauty of design are its focus. So having said that, yes Versailles and the Baroque style, in general, are indeed (by nature of its exaggerated motion and clear detail used to produce drama, exuberance, and grandeur) the clear antithesis of minimalism, I guess. But then again, I don't even see how or why anyone would feel the need to compare one with the other, since both are indeed in opposite spectrums. It's like comparing the incomparable. The words unnecessary and obvious come to mind.

So many European Monarchs tried to emulate Versailles building ever grander palaces but in the end none succeeded in matching the extraordinary quality of this incredible place. Of course the Royal House of Bourbon that lavished so much of the nation's money on this project paid the ultimate price of bloody revolution though the unfortunate Louis XVl was probably the least extravagant and certainly a more decent person than his predecessor Louis XlV who instigated the enormous undertaking.

What impresses me the most about these palaces is the amount of time and work spent into building all the details. Imagine what it was like building such pieces of art of this size three centuries ago when today it takes years to renovate just the facades

There is no word adequate to totally describe the superb splendor and artistry that was placed deliberately into every square foot of this structure! I am in awe of its exquisiteness.. i have a tapestry on the wall behind my bed that features the ceiling painting at 1:43.. as an watercolorist, i am an avid fan of Baroque and its glorious romance! Thank you!

This tour of the versailles palace is super amazing, i find it very beautiful and magestic how the artworks are shown to preservate history and also how different art currents were evolving trough time, i find the murals very stunning; also the complexitythe architercture has (and how it is even another form of art) also thinking of how old it is (made in XVII century) and even how many people have been there (from the kings living there to the tourist nowadays) i love the gardens, they are so perfectly taken care of. Love this cultural heritage piece.

Потрясает невероятная роскошь. Это ведь эпоха барокко. Сколько труда вложено в строительство этого дворца! А ведь это XVII век, никаких современных технологий и материалов ещё не было! Всё это сделано вручную самыми простыми инструментами.
