“The Island,” a secluded homeless encampment on the Sacramento River, has been home to some residents for decades. The camp's inhabitants speak about their close bonds in June 2021, after county rangers gave notice that the camp could be cleared.

Catherine Roberts is my Mother and I can promise you she has home to come to when she is ready. She wants to live her own life in her terms and that is her choice. Years of drug use and trauma has permanently screwed her up. I have tried to find her for a couple years now. And until I saw this video I didn’t even know if she was alive. My cousin went to the camp 1 month ago to talk with her. Left a note with my number I still haven’t heard from her. Things are rough out there and I love my mom but her choices have brought her where she is today. But she knows this doesn’t have to be the end result. When she is ready I will be here.

I'm with you I got a nice 5th wheel, because I gave up looking for affordable housing. The wait list are years long and the ghetto places that are getting shot up every other day is still over 2,000 dollars a month. At least now if I feel unsafe we move. Sure running a generator and propane is expensive but it's crazy here.

They are filthy because they are either drunk or high on meth. I've seen beautiful girls in their late teens. Until they smile and their rotted teeth from meth show. God gave them a perfect little figure and a beautiful face, then they mess it up with bad choices. Usually they wind up in a dumpster by age 28.

Yea, and I wish the over 8 billion people who take a dump and leak everyday that ends up in the ground or in the rivers and oceans would quit eating. Not to mention all the chemicals dumped into the earth and atmosphere by past militaries and the chemical and petroleum industries. Lets not forget about the over 2000 nuclear tests that were released into the environment. What about the billions of gallons of laundry detergent, dishwashing liquids and other soaps and cosmetics. What about the trillions of tons of weapons and poisons dumped into the oceans by the military complex. I could go on and on, but I would be a fool to think you are this dying country would care anyway. Think of all the chemicals leaking and stored underground. You all pretend to care about a planet you have already destroyed and will do so if it comes down to us losing our grip on power over the dumbed down sheep. I guess if they can't have their way and get what they want they will take everyone with them. Sounds like the strategy the Taliban used when they beat Russia and the US. Divided we fall and the super rich and our enemies are loving it.

I have no doubt that “rules” which regulate housing and zoning are partly to blame for a lack of less expensive living options. Developers also see less profit in making tiny affordable homes. Once more affordable choices exist people will move into them. Will this solve homelessness? Probably not completely, but you have got to start somewhere. At the other end is education. At a time when children are forced to return home to live with their parents despite having a college degree, how much hope is there for an under-educated person living on the street? You can’t pull yourself up from the bootstraps when you don’t know what a bootstrap is.

If they would live clean without turning the AREA INTO A DUMP most people would let them alone. Problem is most homeless are LAZY and have mental ISSUES so they turn the area into a DUMP then people in that area get fed up and law enforcement sends them on there way. Here in Maryland a homeless couple lived by the Potomac river for I believe 7 years they would pick trash up and kept that part of the river very clean everyone in this area would give them trash bags for the trash they cleaned up others would haul trash to the dump. People gave them food eventually someone offered them an apartment they kindly said no thanks. I'm not sure what happened. I've seen Maryland DNR drop food and trash bags off to this homeless couple. I live in a very rural area in western Maryland. I guess it has to do with the number of people as well like I said this homeless couple really worked on keeping that stretch of river bank as clean as they could law enforcement and the citizens around here really appreciated this couple.

I agree anyone who is healthy enough to walk and bend over and attain alcohol or drugs to drown their sorrows and emotional turmoil. They better learn how to clean up after themselves or be put in a facility where they will be made to keep their area clean of garbage. This is one reason we are reluctant to help some of these downtrodden souls. Why help someone get a place to live that they will not respect and destroy in time.

@@abuseevidenceresighted9071 in some cases I agree. However I have known plenty of people that grew up in great households with no evidence of trauma, and yet still wound abusing substances and throwing life down the drink. I understand it is case to case, however I can't think of anyone who has a bad life that didn't start using drugs. All my sober friends are doing just fine. I also have friends that are high functioning addicts. IMHO self esteem and confidence determine if one chooses to be "successful" and function in today's society. Many factors determine weather or not people have those positive characteristics.

America would rather put its slaves to work building weapons and training bodies to use these weapons because the profit is so addicting and population control is their top agenda as you all will soon find out. We are just a number to the government, unless you have enough money to buy or rent them to get your way. Remember the government and their super rich masters from around the world want to see this country self destruct and by God they are way ahead of schedule. Divided we fall. They could kill a billion of us tomorrow and in ten years our numbers would be replaced by the over breeders of the world. Especially now that we are the world's favorite immigration dumping ground. The government always pick on the weak, poor and downtrodden. Because if they pushed around someone their own size like Russia and or China we would all get a free cremation and the government mafia wouldn't have many peasants left to demonize and push around. That is a sure sign of a failing nation.

I've gain quite a bit of weight the last couple years, the other day sitting at my daughter's house, my daughter makes a very bold statement. " Mama, I'm gonna need you to take that weight off". I look at her and say "why? You afraid I'm gonna break your sofa😂. Her response " Nope but if I'm gonna take care of your old ass, I'll need you to be skinny so I can pick you up when you fall down 😂. My response, well start lifting weights 🤣. All joking aside, I took care of my Mama when she was no longer able to care for herself. She stayed in my home, under my care right up untill the day she passed. It's called the circle of life and it's the right thing to do.

Stay clean, keep the space clean, don’t do drugs…..don’t camp on the edge of a river in the middle of a recreational space meant for families and kids, paid for by their tax dollars. Find a space that’s not something meant to be a rec space for the general public. I always see people trying to live at parks and such. That’s where children are meant to PLAY….not worry about drug needles littering the ground or human feces where they walk. There should be a designated space for campers like this and it must be required to stay clean and maintained. Let them camp but camp where they are permitted to camp. If they camp outside this area….remove them. Period.

I don't see what that has to do with anything? He's an old homeless man dying of cancer outside. And his tattoos appear more than 20 years old, likely the product of an extended prison stint in the 90s. I'm not going to try and justify those symbols or what they represent, but I think it's important to not judge a book by its cover. He's clearly in a vulnerable state and his tattoos shouldn't have any baring on whether or not he is deserving of help, or whether his plight should even be recognized. Showing the reality of his situation, on that is faced by thousands of Americans up and down the west coast and all over our country, shouldn't hinge upon whether his tattoos are politically correct enough to be broadcast on the internet.

There is a solution to this, just not the will to do it. Find some cheaper public land either in the city or nearby and build low cost free housing for the homeless, make it safe, clean, drug free, and provide food and medical services. Yes, that will cost some money, but so do the roads, public pensions, and municipal services. Now the homeless have a place to go. If they refuse to live there, they can pay for their own housing, leave, or go to jail, but public camping would be banned and the streets and sidewalks would no longer be shantytowns. Problem solved.

It's two parts of government housing assistance: public housing (houses and building the government actually own and can put you in) and public assistance (section-8 vouchers that are given to you and you go and find a house or apartment that takes the voucher). It appeared he applied for the wrong program and should have know that. Or maybe he thought public housing was only for a certain type of people and it didn't look like him. Even the homeless can be evil and hateful.

Sure.. The Democrats make all kind of promises to get votes. Suckers vote for Democrats who give a pittance to the lazy people who don't want to work in exchange for votes. The elite Democrat rich people get richer, the working class people have to work harder and harder to pay for everything while getting poorer and poorer and losing more and more rights and freedoms by the minute. The Democrats are running America into the ground because indoctrinated, entitled lazy ass dumbasses keep voting Democrat.

@@grizzleypeak Hey friend.... and tell me, does this migratory crisis that the USA is experiencing increase poverty? because in chile, portugal and spain, the arrival of illegal immigrants has greatly increased poverty if you see the city of Santiago de Chile, it is full of beggars' tents and they are all foreigners, because basically, a citizen who becomes a beggar has problems with drugs, or with the family or with the police (in most cases) very difficult It's a situation that politics doesn't know how to solve. with an excess of working manpower, wages were reduced by more or less 23% God have mercy on us!

P 1 of 4* Cities can eliminate homeless tent cities by replacing them with *homeless-communities* using _Pallet Shelter's_ existing *homeless shelter village components.* The _Community Room_ sells for $37,000 and serves as a shared laundry room, restaurant, *child daycare center,* and addiction services center. The _Bathroom_ cost $35,000 and the _Services Office_ costs $9,000. So for only $81,000 a city can establish a *homeless village.* The 10'X10' *Camping Cube Sport Pop Up Tent* costs only $120 and provides protection from the elements.

These people have problems , not all created by themselves . I want to comment on where public money goes . You may want to direct your anger there and not as much at people with issues . Law enforcement is the 22nd most dangerous occupation in the USA . In many areas , they are grossly overpaid . Imagine being paid 200 K or more , being off 61 days a year retiring in your late 40's or early 50's with 100K pension and full , gold plated medical benefits ? Roofing #4 and Sanitation #5 are far more dangerous , per the Bureau of Labor Statistics - NOT some lying union official . So let's stop worshipping them as heroes . Scumbag politicians buy their votes with our tax money and these contracts . I can show you custodians who cost the PUBLIC over 100 K a year with the benefits package because their crooked buddies hired them . Wake up - your pockets are being picked . Imagine over 18000 police departments in the USA and each one with a Chief of Police !

I can honestly say the way my life was as a kid.I should have been on drugs in alcohol However, growing up in the inner city.I stayed away from that stuff because I was a christian I didn't even date because of all the trauma had gone through I got through school. I went to college and go to degree. Deep down I knew I couldn't function living in america With the c p t s d and the learning disabilities plus not being able to drive Chronic pain and fatigue I figured living overseas would be better I lived in taiwan for twenty years I had to come back eight months ago and I took eighteen months to find a job I probably can't leave here. But I can save money and most likely go back to school again. And then move back to asia. I can only say that when we live in darkness. Our path is not straight. I was living in darkness and I trusted that jesus would pull me out of a darkness It took a long time for god to get me to a point where I could live here in california and feel okay. Do I want to stay here for the next 20 years? No. That could probably only be done if I was married and had another income. Most americans can't live on one income. 51000 a year after taxes.Just isn't enough to live ,here If I work a few years and then try to find a similar job in a red state with a low cost of living I could probably swing it. i've never felt comfortable living in america I think if you don't have good health the ability to drit makes it difficult to function here I'll never judge a homeless person.I understand why they turned drugs when they were kids. I just shared my story because I know jesus can help these people Once you accept christ you can get inner healing and deliverance That really helped me I had all kind of addictive tendencies.I just never gave in to them because I asked jesus to help me. Then he eventually removed what was oppressing me I know that. Homeless people are most likely the most broken people you'll ever meet. But I also know jesus can restore them

P *4 of 4* The homeless can simply move the tents they are using now into the homeless-village. *Or the **_Shelter 100,_** provided by FEMA,* is a $9,500 shelter that is climate controlled, built in one hour, is 100 sq. ft., and uses a folding bunk system to house up to four beds. *_Pallet Shelter's_* private sleeping cabins offer *security* and durability. Which addresses the concerns of the homeless who reject the restrictions of “bed-only” homeless-shelters; for only one night.

Street homeless live very simple and modest life. It's really a minimalist type of life. They don't need much, so they don't ask for much. They find a camping spot, and it becomes their new home with new stories and memories. They prefer being left alone as they are. The only thing they really want and think about all day long is fentanyl. 99% of street homeless are fentanyl addicts, and there is no solution for it. Large majority of them will die from fentanyl overdose, or drugs related violence in this decade. Very sad.

Unfortunately for millions of Americans in order to survive, those made homeless, *due to failed Republican polices,* will have to lower their standard of living dramatically and live in modest accommodations. Such as _Pallet Shelter's_ *Shelter 64* which sleeps two in a private cabin. Placed in combination with _Pallet Shelter's_ other components: *Community Room,* Bathroom, and Services Office; to form an entire *Homeless Shelter Village.* Where rent is 10% of net income for the 2 person shelter and 20% for the four person shelter. Which goes to providing _one free meal a day_ and *childcare* so that the working poor can go to work: in the Community Room.
