Civil War sites in North Carolina often go overlooked . . . but not today as Garry Adelman makes his first visit to Historic New Bern to explore the New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I felt so connected to the battle just by virtue of the earthworks and being able to walk in and among them when I visited this battlefield. It was the easiest interpretation of any battlefield I’ve visited due to the efforts of the preservation. Very well done!

Have to agree with all you have said. New Bern battlefield is a pleasant walk and great to explore. The town is nice, with friendly folks and great food.

Thanks for the video! I've been to New Bern several times for vacation, but never knew this was here. Next time I'm in the area I will have to go visit. Fun fact, New Bern is where Pepsi was invented. It is also where author Nicholas Sparks lives.

It really is great. We spent several hours there. You can take one or all of the trails & we saw everything. It is a quiet place, not a lot of traffic, so just walking through the tree-covered paths, looking at the swamps brings flashes of how dreadful it was for both sides. We stayed at a lovely B&B in New Bern which is a few miles n. of this site. There are plenty of them & the town is full of historic sites. Really worth it, if you are around NC.

Wartime NC Governor, Zebulon Vance was the commander of the 26th NC there at New Bern! Very cool, I don’t know it was preserved!

I used to live in New Bern, 4 houses from the Palace. Was a Civil War house on George St. Right next to the Stamford house. Great town and the home of Pepsi. Hopefully you get to check the town out. So much to see and do there.

The APCWS later known as "Battlefield trust" really did a poor job with their battlefield acquisition of the Brices Crossroad Battlefield.

I've been to this battlefield as I live in NC. Jeff Davis ignored the Carolinas. It had to have been a desperate fight for the confederates. After the battle, New Bern was not a good place to be.

If you go, it's pronounced newbern (1 word) by the locals, not New Bern (2 words).
