Great video. On my XT I can touch the compass icon in the top right corner of the map and toggle between North Up, Heading Up and 3D. Comes in handy. Also would like to note that if you import a route from Basecamp or another program the route shows up in the Trip Planner app. I plan my trips on back roads that the Zumo would almost always skip even in adventure mode. Not dirt roads but close. Think you could plan off road trips if you had the maps and transfer to the Zumo if you wanted.

I'm sure every rider has their own idea of what a GPS should do, and those ideas will often not align with mine. If you prefer tracks, that's fine. But... The Zumo series has always been aimed primarily at street and touring riders, who plan and navigate routes, and usually like spoken directions. There was no mention of pre-planned routes. Out of that whole video, the Trip Planner was mentioned only once (at 52:50), described incompletely by someone who has never used it, and then dismissed as a "road-based thing" in less than twenty seconds. Hellooo! IT IS a road-based GPS! Describe it's strengths, don't ignore them!
@TouratechUSA
@TouratechUSA Жыл бұрын
Larry it sounds like you should make a video focused on the road riding strengths of the Zumo XT. We are more focused on adventure bikes and unpaved travels so that's what we know best.

I would recommend though that you use your curser while changing screens and make it available for those watching to see what your doing. Would be helpful. Just getting started - for me charging the internal battery was not standard = using the USB cable no matter what I did would not charge the internal battery. That is nuts - cost me a lot of time. The motorcycle hard mount 12V was the only option to charge the internal battery with THE ZUMO TURNED ON. if the Zumo was turned off the internal battery would not charge. That is more nuts. Excellent video. Very easy to follow and understand. I just recently got the Zumo XT. I wish there was a compressive written user's guide available. There are so many features in the XT and I'm finding the learning curve to be a bit steep (being a senior has its challenges). I like to listen to music when I ride and I have a very large music library that I would like to put on a sd card and play from the card rather than loading the mp3 files into the limited internal storage of the XT. I have not found out how to play mp3 files from the sd card. Please advise me where I could get that information. Thanks for any help or advice.
@TouratechUSA
@TouratechUSA Жыл бұрын
This post on the Garmin support forum outlines the basic process: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=tytHec27o01tlI9YgQASL6 Essentially you create a folder called 'MP3' on the SD card and transfer all the songs you want there. After a full power cycle the GPS will look at that card and have access to the music files. Be aware that the Zumo XT can't recognize an SD card larger than 256gb. Glad you found the video helpful and thanks for the comment.

I can import my tracks, but I've lost the menu item that says "Show on Map"....now there just seems to be the "Go" option which navigates you on the track. I want to be able to display several tracks on the base map at one time. Any ideas?

@@TouratechUSA Hey there, actually I found an answer to this on a Garmin User forum. The later versions have reinstated the "show on map" functionality, but I had to do a diagnostic reset of the "Explore functionality" for this to re-appear. But now it is fixed. Actually, more questions... so connecting to the smartphone’s Drive app opens up Waze like services like weather, traffic conditions etc. assuming that you need to keep the phone ON! Obvious, but my iPhone 7 Plus heating up is what convinced me that I needed a dedicated GPS and this will cause the smartphone to keep scanning for Wifi (unless you turn that off) and that means you’ll be pulling from your data plan $$$
@TouratechUSA
@TouratechUSA 3 жыл бұрын
You will need to have your phone turned on for the GPS to use the data connection but the scree can be turned off. You are correct that the data for traffic, weather, etc will come from your cell data plan so be sure to plan accordingly for that usage.

Finally, I’m really worried that the mount is not very secure... it clicks in but it’s easy to - not - click or eventually “click out” 😱 so I am thinking about a security web as back up... can’t use the one I got for my iPhone but that felt much safer! Still looking at options.

Yes I much preferred the positive and substantial “click” in of my 595LM. I have to play with it a bit each time I mount it to the bike, but so far it appears that when it’s seated it’s very firmly attached. I had a 660 fall off once years ago (due to carelessness on my part) and it just bounced down the road and was dinged up on the corners, but like the Timex.... it just kept ticking. I think this XT unit would not fare well if it fell off.

When using the Zumo XT it is essential that you use motorcycle mode when using it on a motorcycle. This is because it has built in collision detection and it is much more sensitive in car mode than motorcycle mode. If you use it in car mode on the bike you get "Incident Detected" warnings every 30 seconds. This wasn't an issue on older devices as they didn't have collision detection. Navigation wise the route settings are determined by the route calculation mode and the avoidances you specify so navigation wise there isn't a great deal of difference. That is determined by your settings.

First, want to thank you for making this video. I've owned several GPS units through the years and they seem to get more and more complicated. Last week ti took a motorcycle ride in the gold country in kalironia. I have about six unsaved tracks. I would like to save them, which I have not done. I would like to combine them into a single track, if that's the right thing to do. I would like to have a single event. I would like to show the number of miles driven in each segment. I would like to either print this or find a way to share with another person who does not have a GPS. How can I do this? I don't want to loose the original data. Jim
@TouratechUSA
@TouratechUSA Жыл бұрын
You certainly can do this but I think you will need to use a computer. You can download Garmin Basecamp onto your computer, upload the tracks from the Zumo, and then create a file with the items you want to share. I suggest you keep the sections split into their own tracks rather than combining them, you can share them all in one file by exporting from Basecamp as a GPX file.

I bought this Garmin under protest because I took a guided tour in Morocco and am about to take one in Great Britain. I appreciate your reply but I gotta tell you this thing is a gorgeous kluge. The whole thing. Good software needs little documentation. Download a map for God’s sake. You need two devices, two operating systems, two applications. Cables. Try to set a destination to a hotel NAME in a distant city. In America on my American bike I have a NAV VI. It finds 20 out of zero traffic jams and never warns about real ones. Someone should buy Garmin and make it work. The only thing it has going for it is a nice screen that can be seen in bright sunlight. Base Camp is a bloody nightmare and shouldn’t exist. Garmin Drive. What’s that for? Between the two of them it can’t find half the places I try to set as destinations. What is motorcycle mode? How about interesting route mode whether you’re on a steam shovel or a unicycle? The only reason I can think of to have a motorcycle mode is for roads that are only 30 inches wide.
