Ever wondered where Tourette's syndrome came from? Find out about the fascinating history of this intriguing condition.
Hello and welcome to my channel on the History of Mental Health.
In this video I’m going to be exploring the fascinating historical background behind the first descriptions of Tourette's Syndrome.
Expect to find out who Gilles de la Tourette was and how the Cursing Countess fits into the story. I will also talk about the cultural context of Paris in the 1880s and the sad end of the man whose name will be forever attached to the syndrome.
I really hope you enjoy the video and if you do - any likes, comments or subscriptions would be truly appreciated.
If you have any suggestions for further videos or any questions at all, please let me know below in the comments!
Amusez-vous bien!

The "Remember you're a Womble" fix is brilliant! I know that cults at times have used thought-stopping mantras to help their members shortcircuit any questioning of doctrine, but this surely takes the principle to the next level! Tell me more...

I have an undiagnosed tick disorder, mainly because I can't find a neurologist to take me seriously. I've also previously been diagnosed with low b12, so I will be told- here, just have a few Injections and you'll be right, I am aware that a b12 deficiency has some of the same symptoms of Tourettes, which makes it harder to be taken seriously- furthermore, it grinds my gears when people ask me if I have autism 😡 like F me, other neurological disorders exist aside from autism, why is that the first diagnosis out of the bag 😡

His cases weren't translated til 1998? That almost sounds like an oversight--goodness sake. How long did it take you and your colleague to translate all nine? Congratulations on that effort! I really enjoy your work because you give details to familiar topics that add so much to the interest factor. It's a sort of "behind the scenes" look, a backdrop done in a concise and thorough manner perfectly suited for us lay people. Science blended with human interest is irrestible to me. Thank you, and I look forward to more!

Many thanks Professor Yorston for your many well-researched and interesting videos. I found this one of particular interest as in my university days I wrote a paper about Ellen West and her 'case' history which revealed so many aspects of how medicine and psychiatry have always been embedded (as they must be) in their socio-historical contexts which were as influential as any biological factors affecting health and wellbeing. It remains fascinating to me that Psychoanalysis and Freud still have any credibility despite the disasters and abuses which the 'treatment' of many people clearly revealed - the image of Freud and his colleague Fleiss stuffing bandages up the nostrils of a female patient and then removing them following infection has never left me - among so many others. Misogyny sadly, has a horrible pathway through the history of western medicine.

There was some form of inoculation against smallpox(?) which involved pricking the skin and transferring a weakened form of it (or cowpox)? from one subject to another but this could also transfer syphilis and leprosy ...this form of inoculation was happening in the Victorian period and earlier(?), roughly how many extra cases of these diseases were transmitted this way? Sorry for being so vague , I heard about this at a lecture in The Royal Society many years ago.

This only confirms an opinion one has always had, mainly that the practitioners of psychiatry (and neurology) are the prime victims (or exponents) of their own theories: they are invariably 'Alfa males', over-ambitious, highly intelligent, neurotic, demanding, over-bearing, dominant and exhibiting all the traits of a Type D personality! I did not 'throw into the mix' the word' egocentric, but that also comes 'with the packager'. As a result their marriages (wives and children) all suffer from this type of character. But so long as they are 'praised' for their careers and are given rewards in high salaries, or fees for lectures and treating patients, they are 'happy campers'. God forbid anyone that has to live, or co-habit, with them!

Oh dear you forgot Laughing ¨did anyone remember laughter´ so sorry but hald of your list are normal behaviours that we all do involuntary. And to be really honest I talk to myself loudly all the time. That is how creative people organise their thoughts. What is wrong with that? I just loved when little ipod thingies came to the world for our ears so it looks like we are talking on the telephone! It isnt it is our deep desire to connect with our inner being, Tourettes can be somones bad psychological game that can hurt our neurological system. To not understand our interconnectedness and be thoughtful and kind is a real example of not being able to stop projecting thoughtless actions unto the Other. Alll real concepts and relatedness well documented by academia. So a dumb docco.
