John F Kennedy was the youngest ever elected president of the United States - brimming with health and vitality - at least that’s what he wanted people to believe.
In reality, he had the most complex health history of anyone to occupy the White House and was taking a crazy cocktail of medication including steroids, barbiturates, opiate pain killers, and testosterone.
This video explores the shocking, but little known medical history of JFK, focussing on his gastro-intestinal symptoms and Addison’s disease and asks the question of what all those pills and injections could have done to the mind of the man with his finger on the nuclear button.
There is a companion video that goes into more depth into his back problems and his Dr Feelgood amphetamine injections: JFK's Crazy Dr Feelgood Shots • JFK's Crazy Dr Feelgoo...
Finding Out More:
Some of JFK’s medical records can be seen online at the JFK Library. Robert Dallek’s biography John F. Kennedy: An Unfinished Life 1917-1963 is a well-researched and detailed conventional biography that describes a lot of JFK’s medical problems.
However, Richard A. Lertzman’s book - Dr Feelgood: The Shocking Story of the Doctor Who May Have Changed History by Treating and Drugging JFK, Marilyn, Elvis, and Other Prominent Figures is a fascinating read even if it seems a little far-fetched at times. Both are available through my Amazon store page: amzn.to/3KlzKNU

@@professorgraemeyorston The day I saw him in September, 1962, that brown face was striking. I had always read it was a result of the cortisone, not a sign of Addison's. But his face was also puffy, swollen looking, which indicates cortisone use, I understand. In 1974, I saw an interview with a writer named Adela Rogers St John. She was close to the Kennedys, so close they could trust her with secrets. From the Robert Caro book, one learns that later in the 1950s, Kennedy had cortisone pellets ( I don't know the proper name, you will, Doctor ) implanted in the skin of an upper thigh two or three times a year, which replaced the need for shots and also apparently smoothed out the highs and lows of cortisone use. But Adela Rogers St John talked about a day in 1954, when she and Kennedy were talking in his Senate office. For whatever reason, he had not gotten a cortisone shot on schedule, and was waiting for delivery of it. Adela Rogers St John said that as they talked, Kennedy began to halt in his speech, and eventually stopped even trying. He knew she understood what was happening to him. She said he appeared to wither away, second to second, as she watched, struck dumb with dread and helplessness because there was nothing she could do. He had tears welling in his eyes, and finally managed to say, "You see - you see - how I am without it." After the Addison's was diagnosed, everywhere Kennedy went, a valise went with him. It contained cortisone and syringes. His father is said to have had supplies of cortisone and syringes stocked in safe deposit boxes in a bank in every major city in North America and Europe in case Jack lost the valise.

No, no secret there. I was busily developing autoimmune disease which was impacting my kidneys. I remember feeling a kinship with JFK, as I had the same 'high colouring' of kidney disease which presented as rude good health. Hence his campaign slogan of 'youth and vigour', but the deeper greyish tinge was always there.

His illness was especially easy to see in his early years in Washington, progressively weak. Probably why the newspapers were always commented in his health. Once he got older and filled out, berore running for President, it was harder to see... But I remember my Mom commenting on how brave he had to be, to keep working, to hide the illness.

For all his health problems, he was the only president to win a Pulitzer before running. He held weekly press conferences, which no other president has done, and he had a remarkable sense of humor. Regarding the "danger" of erratic decisions during the 1962 Missile Crisis. he was, next to Adlai Stevenson, the strongest voice for minimal reaction.

I was diagnosed with an atrophied pituitary gland in the late 1960’s. This was uncovered because my parents were trying to find out why I was so short compared to kids my age. The pituitary is the master gland in control of all endocrine systems. My condition was called hypopituitarism. I was started on growth hormone and in addition I was given synthroid, hydro-cortisone (exra when I was sick or under stress) and testosterone once I had reached a fairly normal height. I too became easily tired before being administered the cortisone. The endocrine doctor was surprised I hadn’t died when I had my adenoids and tonsils removed!

The one you did on Rosemary Kennedy was not only moving, but also gave some fascinating insight into the family dynamics and upbringing of the Kennedy children. I don’t believe there’s such a thing as a family being cursed, but if I did, the Kennedys would definitely come to mind. Particularly JFK, Jackie and children. For all their affluence and successes, this family has been marred by more than their fair share of tragedy.

This hiding huge medical issues goes back to Woodrow Wilson. He was very ill and it was hidden from the public for a very long time by his wife and possibly others. As time went on for those in the President’s office. Things continued to be handled quietly until recovery was achieved. But JFK was having chronically illnesses. Then he had Addison disease. He had back problems but didn’t stop him from liking the ladies. So he was given certain drugs to help his pain. Life was not as easy as he made it look. So because of certain medications it increased his womanizing… But the media was different back then.

My Mom had Addison's Disease. Before the Doctor's were able to diagnose her she weighed 88lbs and she was about 5 foot 7 in height. Every time she ate she threw it all up. Every time. Before the Drs. diagnosed her she got into her Merck manual( she was an RN) and had diagnosed herself., But, she was afraid to tell the Dr. what she thought. When they just couldn't seem to find out what it was she told the Dr. what she thought that she had. So, he decided to check her for that and sure enough she was right. After an IV of cortisone, she ate like the starving woman she looked like!! Cortisone saved her life and she lived to be a much older woman. I think of that Dr. everyday and praise him for putting aside his self-esteem for a moment and listening to the patient.

Hi Dr. Yorston, thanks for your video on John Kennedy. He was indeed a very sick man! All of this at the time was very well hidden from the public. I very much doubt that in today's social media age that he would have won the presidency. I think the thing that strikes me most about him was his tenacity and determination throughout his life. Kennedy will always be a hero to me because of his courage and tenacity. To have overcome all he had, only to die as he did, is extremely disheartening. Whatever his personal failings were - according to his friend and procurer, Dave Powers, at least 1,500 women - there was nonetheless greatness there. And the spirit rebels at the fact that a lifeless little psychopath, 24 years old, killed him. Yet there is no credible evidence which points to a second assassin or to a conspiracy. None. Not one bit. Life specializes in breaking the heart.

@professorgraemeyorston, cortisone and testosterone. I'm American. Kennedy is real to me in a way he can't possibly be to 99% of the world's population: in 1962, when I was 10, I saw him from maybe fifteen feet away. He was the most amazing looking human being I have ever seen, and I have never seen a photo which does him justice. About the sexual matter: everything I've read is that his coitus was performed in the female superior position. Every woman who ever spoke about her entanglement with Kennedy said the same thing about him: he was a completely selfish lover, little interest in foreplay, a slam - bam - thank you, ma'am type.

@@user-zy3zd3sx2d some writer for Newsweek back in the 1990s, in addressing the matter of his promiscuity, referred to Kennedy as "pond scum." It's hard to disagree. Yet this pond scum was capable of such outrage at the newsfilm of civil rights demonstrators being set upon by water cannons and by police dogs in Birmingham, in 1963, that he told his staff to cancel his schedule for the day and to inform the networks that he wanted a half hour in primetime that evening to address the nation about civil rights. The staff ( and this included Robert, of course ) begged him to cool off, and wait while together they and the President put together a deliberated speech. Kennedy said, more or less, f*ck off, I'm going tonight. He wrote the speech himself, improvising some of it as he spoke. You wouldn't think that such a sexually selfish man would be capable of such incensed moral outrage, but humans are strange creatures. It's a marvelous book which I urge everyone who is curious about Kennedy to read: The Passage of Power, by Robert Caro. It's a part of his biography of Lyndon Johnson, but there is as much about Kennedy as there is about Johnson in that book. Kennedy's heroism in rescuing his crew after their PT boat had been rammed by a Japanese destroyer in the South Pacific in 1943 is astonishing. You wouldn't expect that of a man as sexually selfish as Kennedy, either, but again, humans are strange creatures.
