A Minnesota real estate listing went viral recently due to the artificial sandstone caves connected to the house. Since I'm involved in digging sandstone caves of my own, I thought it would be fun to take a look!
We investigate the cave layout and design, as well as some of the history of the property and surroundings.

I lived in the house in ‘86-87, with a couple of buddies. The owners rented it to us while they getting ready to renovate it and move in. Cool place, we played frisbee in the long tunnel, as well as rented it out to folks that wanted to store cars over the winter. The house was smaller then; the part to the left of the big carriage doors on the front of the house, as you look at the house, was added during the renovation. My bedroom is shown around 6:05 of the video, it looked out onto the back patio, and up the hill, where I could see the tower.

That's cool! I wonder if there are any other houses in town with caves?

@@saveitforparts Not sure. I was digging through some pictures this morning, and realized that I made a mistake when I said the section to the left of the carriage doors was added during renovation. I have pics of the section being there, then remembered it was the pump house section of the house. During the renovations of the house, the owners added a second floor above this part, and built the big bedroom shown in the video.

So a 3000 square foot home with 4 bed, 3 bath, caves, .4 acre lot built in 1926 all for the low price $550,000 with a two car garage. Wow. Cool place

I grew up next to the Plummer estate and am familiar with its history. There is another cave beneath the ponds in your video. For gas, electric lines and Dr. Plummer's research and refrigeration. And yes, where the 2 ponds sit was a limestone quarry from which native stone was used on the property and the lower gardens were created. Many similar caves exist in Rochester. Perhaps, ask to see the other cave and post. City owns the Plummer house.

Do you know what’s inside the Tower? And was there a way to get up into the Tower from the tunnel?

If the pipes were attached to the water tower the medium one would probably be used for refilling the tank and the larger one for supply to homes and businesses from the tank.

They have never put fish in those ponds they put a dye in them that makes them extremely blue. You should really visit it during the summer. Best to book a tour of the Plummer because it’s a huge wedding venue during the summer season.

Probably around 50°F, although I didn't measure it. Usually caves and tunnels stay the average of the annual outdoor temperature unless artificially heated/cooled.

Can anyone give a name to the owners of the house from, say 1955-1985? My hometown, I knew who lived in most of the homes south of 2nd St SW as a child......

While digging through photos this morning, looking for stuff from when I lived there, I came across a Post-Bulletin article from June of 1980, on the house. The article stated that the house had been recently sold to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marzolf, owners of Marzolf Implements in Spring Valley, and they intended to rent it out. My friends and I rented it, 5-6 years later, from Dr. and Mrs. Peter Dyck, so Marzolf's had sold it sometime during that interim. The Dyck's did the renovation.

There's a cave right next to the highway somewhere between St. Peter and Mankato on the right side as you drive from St Peter to kato. But you're gonna need real spelunkers to check it out. Not a walk in tour. I honestly don't know how deep or far back it goes. Maybe its nothing.

I've seen a couple little ones and one larger one along that stretch. Apparently back in the day it was known as the "Seven Caves" and featured extensive sculptures and sandstone carvings by a local artist. Then the highway was widened and smashed most of the original tunnel system :-(

@@saveitforparts - Wow. So very cool you already know about it AND some of its history. The one we used to stop and check out back in 80's, if I remember right, someone said there was a mental hospital on top of the hill above and behind it. Anyway, it only went a few feet in that you could walk upright, then the only way forward would have been to crawl through a slippery limestone opening that was shaped like a fat mouth frown, as though you would have been crawling over the top of a large slippery ball with the ceiling following that same curvature about a foot above your back. And pitch black. So, you know, for sure, there was some kind of hungry, ancient, evil just beyond that darkness, waiting for another collage boy, trying to impress his girlfriend, to stick his head just a little further in...

My brokerage listed this home last year, here is the listing description: "Nestled into the hillside just below the Plummer house and iconic water tower, the historic Plummer Pump House is offered to the public for the first time in 34 years. This beautifully preserved property in southwest Rochester offers flexible living spaces, privacy, and intimate outdoor areas. Designed by Ellerbe and Plummer, the home features original carriage doors and charming exterior details which enhance its beauty. Modern elements were designed with a nod to Rochester history - the period slate flooring and the sweeping floating staircase with brass accents. The lovely sitting room with fireplace has the original beamed ceiling and pegged wood flooring - Dr. Plummer was said to have sought refuge in this room when he needed to study in peace. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 3000 finished square feet. One of the most enticing features are the attached caves, the opportunities are endless for this additional 3600 square feet of space. Own a part of Rochester's history!" Listed at $550K, sold for $600k. Dr. Plummer was a genius, not only a medical doctor, but an engineer and architect. My understanding is there is a tunnel complex under his home above, possibly tied to this cave system, that would draw air into the house in the summer, essentially creating natural air conditioning. I've also heard the Plummer House also had one of the first forced air heating systems, which makes sense with these cooling tunnels. The large piping was for pumping water up to the water tower above, hence the "Plummer Pump House". As you can see, the design of this home compliments the home above, all being designed by Ellerbe and Plummer himself. The caves you mentioned at Quarry Hill were for cold storage for the former State Hospital (Mental Hospital) that was just down the hill next to the current Federal Medical Center. When I was little, we lived very close by and my older brother would play in the Quarry Hill caves all the time. There is a fair amount of info online about these caves.
