The World of Interiors presents Visitors’ Book with Polly Nicholson & Edward Bayntun-Coward at George Bayntun. As great-grandson to George Bayntun, Edward inherited the bookshop & bookbindery from his father, Hylton - which has remained a family-owned business since it was founded in 1894.
As we’re guided through the front-facing bookshop - awarded the royal appointment of bookseller to Her Majesty Queen Mary in 1950 - we’re escorted through to the hand bookbindery, which is the only bindery of its kind to retain the practices established in 1829 by Robert Riviere. It is here where Polly Nicholson has developed her herbarium of tulips, cultivated in a series of walled gardens and a one-acre field at the foot of the Marlborough Downs. Watch the full episode of Visitors’ Book as we explore George Bayntun and delve deeper into Polly’s wonderful tulip collection.

My family lived in Victorian London . The men all worked as bookbinders and the women all worked as bookfolders . I have been unable to find anything that would tell me what life was like for them .

Very interesting and most admirable. I would only question the "probably" about being the only binder left in the world; perhaps "possibly" might be more gracious unless you thoroughly researched, which you don't mention. Thank you for sharing what you both do

Art, nearly lost. More and more books are going unrestored and falling into disrepair. Almost impossible to find a book restorer/binder and if you find one the cost is prohibitive compare to book value. Sad.

What a load of crap. There are well over 1,000 hand bookbinders left, myself included. There are hundreds just in the UK many a million times more famous than this place. My bindery is in the rear of my bookstore too. I don't know why they needed to lie about this, but it's ridiculous and insulting to everyone else.
