Decided to enter the 2023 MV Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby and man it was a blast! We were kayak fishing for false albacore, bonito and bluefish. The conditions were tough but we were able to make it work, stay tuned for part 2!

Can you do a gear run-down of your main reels and rods? Surf, inshore, and offshore? Recommendations even? My wife and I are gonna be moving up to Rhode Island. I want to start surf-fishing and have that $600 price range for a rod and reel set-up. And like a $350 price range for a lighter reel and rod step-up to throw off docks. Brands, size?

Worked summers on the vineyard for four years up to 2017. One of my favorite places in the world! Great fishing there. Always wanted to do a full derby, and had many local friends who did and still do, but always had to leave by mid-September. Try to launch out of Lake Tashmoo next time, not too far from where you were in Vineyard Haven.

Love the vineyard. We spend a little time there every summer. It’s a great place and a fisherman’s dream.

Ha ha” I was there 2 weeks sep 16 to the 30. Try to find this book! (Reading the water by Robert Post )it’s not a how to book its about fishing and fishermen from the past on the Vineyard it’s out of print but available.
