Dr. Mary Jo Larson explains several key concepts that underlie efforts to synchronize “a culture of pain awareness” in the Military Health System.
Dr. Larson describes her research project funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health: a population study of the entire Army population that has returned from deployment over the past decade - particularly with respect to the topics of chronic pain, its treatment (e.g., with opioids, other drugs, and/or nondrug therapies), and outcomes associated with treatments. The study also enables analyses of population subgroups, such as women.
Dr. Larson is a senior scientist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University. Her research focus is on improving health care systems-most recently, systems that care for military members and their families affected by chronic pain or behavioral health conditions.
