BONUS VIDEO: Axle Autopsy! Towed in, Drove Out! Chrysler 3.6 • Axle Autopsy! Towed in...
This Chrysler Town and Country came into the shop on a tow truck. The customer states vehicle makes loud clicking grinding and banging noise, and the transmission does not go into gear. When they try to drive then engine starts and runs but only revs when they try to drive. There are warning lights on the dash as well. Using the scan tool, we looked into the fitted systems for trouble codes and found little direction as the DTC's were unrelated to the transmission or engine. We did find a tire pressure warning light on due to TPMS sensors not communicating. Using the lift, we raised and supported the visual for visual inspection. Placing the vehicle in drive with the engine running while raised on the lift, we found the problem! The van has some driveline damage including a torn CV Axle boot. The other axle didn't look as good! We found a CV joint was broken in half. The bearings in the cv axle were destroyed and the axle was no longer connected to it's shaft. The customer was contacted and quoted to replace both CV axle shafts.
The repair began by removing the wheels and tires, followed by the outer tie rod ends. The tie rod was easily disassembled with a hammer. The steering strut was then unbolted from the strut to avoid disassembly of the lower ball joint. This allowed removal of the CV Shaft without removing the steering knuckle. After the steering was disconnected, both CV axles were removed and we waited for parts to be delivered. The new Axles were compared to the original units to be sure the fitment was correct and were then installed into the transmission and the steering was reconnected.

I appreciated the blue light tutorial. You could offer an advanced course on "turning on headlights". It is amazing how many cars I drive up on at night with no tail lights on because they are using just their daytime running lights for night driving. (And they are driving 60 mph in the left hand lane, but that would be a graduate level course.)

I learned to drive in Florida and went to college in Nebraska and I used to call NE the “drive slow on the left state”. Advantage of learning in FL was you learn to watch out for different driving styles because tourists come from locations with different driving practices and habits, which can often make you need to stay on your toes. Snowbirds with Quebec tags tended to be the worst overall in my experience - it was almost like they were sent south to enjoy the winter weather and save Canadian lives.

OMG, thank you for the high beam PSA. One of my adult daughters, who went to a private driving school, didn't know how to toggle them. For a good while, she thought her lowbeam headlights had burned out because turning the knob twice resulted in highbeams coming on. 🤦🏻 I saw on another channel the lamenting of the loss of public education driver's ed courses that us Gen Xers and before had to take. The amount of bright lights here in AZ is a testament to that loss of education. Of course, I did turn it into a teaching moment.

I can relate. Don't put your high beams on just because! You're suppose to use them when you're having a hard time seeing the road. Even the manual for the car says when to use them. Ray, I don't think any of us mind long videos. I love watching them because A) I'm not a car person, I just follow the instructions in the manual in terms of fluid exchanges and B) Every video you upload teaches me a little bit extra, hopefully, enough to not get ripped out. I learned the difference between coolant leaks vs oil leaks, when both get combined and leak, how to do a quick check if my brakes pads are ok or if I need new ones, take care of a part that only has surface rust that I can clean with anti-rust agents with a wire brush and then "paint" them with an anti-rust coating, among many things that I'm willing to recognize "I don't have the skillset for this, I'll take it to a mechanic to get it fixed". Just my humble opinion. You have a gift to explain something I would find complex in a simple way, and I'm a moron!

My son is a physician. As part of his residency, they were actually encouraged to watch "House" and try to follow and speculate over the storyline. I've got to say as a mechanic wannabe, I have learned a lot from just watching your videos and trying to speculate how things come apart. Your videos have become longer, possibly because you do so much in real time rather than high speed camera work. I think one of the masters of mechanics is Faye Hadley, her videos are much shorter as she does high speed edits over mundane stuff like zapping bolts out. She doesn't have the color comments or as much instruction as you so that's the trade off. Eric O is similar in time as so much is real time. Keep up the videos and I'll learn automotive from the 3 of you.

It is now high 30's here in Michigan and like 3 days of rain. We had almost a foot of snow a week ago. Now I can see some green grass in the front lawn.

I think you’re right about the people driving around with their brights on and not knowing it. I also believe part of the problem a lot of people are buying LED bulbs with the highest Luman output imaginable and some don’t have the right light output or even a cut off line. They just shoot light all over the place especially depending on the housing. I have definitely noticed a lot more blinders out there.

I used to run an auto parts store. People came in all of the time needing headlight bulbs. When I would ask ask high or low beam, they had no clue. You would be amazed at the blank looks they would give me.

New restrictions on the XL Bully dogs are now in force (31 December) making it a legal requirement for all XL Bully dogs to be kept on a lead and muzzled when in public. It is also illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange, abandon or let XL Bully dogs stray from today. The decision to ban XL Bully dogs was made following a concerning rise in attacks from these dangerous dogs, with 23 people sadly losing their lives after vicious dog attacks in the last three years. XL Bullies have been involved in many of these tragic deaths. Owners are also being urged to apply to register their current XL Bully dogs, as the Government takes action to safely manage the existing population of the breed. There is only a month left to meet the deadline when the ban comes into force on 1 February.

Knew immediately what the problem was when you put the van into gear Ray. Had a little Buick Skylark do it to me when I was in my 20s. Was driving along, made a horrid noise from the front end, then wouldn't go any longer and made that same exact noise when pressing the accelerator. Broken CV shaft. Wasn't my car, so didn't know there were issues with it like that. Found out the hard way, lol.

I initially thought this video was referring to the 3.6L V6 engine breaking in two. We have several Caravans at work that have many miles on them, however well maintained, with these engines and never a problem with the vehicles.

35-40 mins video Ray is long enough. Most of us don't have time & the attention span to see mechanical work. We just wanna see the cause of the problem, solution of it and the conclusion. Leave all the other details for the devil. Thanks for showing man!

I always take the strut bolts out. Just mark the front edge of the strut on the spindle and put it back in the same place if their is adjustability. I used to work at the Subaru factory in Lafayette Indiana and we put a glob of grease on that c clip on the inboard joint and it will slide in with ease. Great video have a great day as always

Ray, don't worry about the length of your videos. Since you started using the 4K HDR camera, I can't get enough of your videos on my 77" HDR TV. What a treat seeing everything so super sharp and super bright in full living color. It really improves the presentation dramatically. Very few people put out anything close to the quality of your videos, both in content and the beauty of the 4K HDR. Actually none of the channels I subscribe to offer this level of video quality. Everything is so easy to see. I used to watch your videos on my 1080P computer monitor. Not anymore. Great work as always in this episode. The customers will be thrilled to learn the tranny is fine and the repair was less serious.
