Bought a 23 foot 4600 pound camper in 2022. Towing it with a Ford Ranger 4x4 XLT rated to pull 7500 pounds. The camper dealership installed the e2 weight distribution/sway bar. When they first hooked up the trailer with the weight distribution bar, the back of my truck sank down pretty low. They then made adjustments to the bar shifting more of the weight to the front of the vehicle that perfectly leveled out my truck with camper attached. They showed me the before and after pictures. I do not know what adjustments they made that shifted the weight. It's beyond my area of expertise and understanding, but was happy with the results and I assume it was easier to do with a smaller camper. We lost our dog of 15 years, Pepper, in 2021. Similar situation, he was sick and not going to get better. The Veterinarian told us she recommended we put him down and if Pepper were her dog she would do the same. Very emotional day watching him look up at us when the Vet gave him the shot. We do not want to re-live that again so we decided not to get another pet. Pepper was our only pet, so we decided he would be our last. If Barbara had not found Roomie when she did, he may not have survived. You were able to give him years of happiness he otherwise would not have enjoyed.

I am so sorry for your loss. THat is one of the hardest thins I have ever had to do. I didn't have another dog for a very long time. Our Lucy is a 12 pound YorkiePoo that is 8 yrs old. I have recently started thinking about when she passes away and the heartache we will have. You did all you could do and gave Roomy the best life you could. You will always have the memories.

I watched this video and all the emotions came flooding back to the day where I went through the exact same thing. Never thought that the day I walked into the Vets office that I'd be walking out after having to make the same choice. I held my dog in my arms and just before the shot was given, she looked up at me with the most trusting eyes. Then went limp in my arms. I had my dog for 12yrs and haven't had one since. The hurt of having to put her down is not something I care to endure again. I do wish you the best in your future.

We had to put 3 of our dogs down, and one cat, so I can feel your pain. They traveled with us everywhere. They were our babies even though they got old. We have one cat left and another that found her way into our lives. We sold our trailer, bought a class c, but sold it after a year and now we have an even older 5th wheel. My husband said he felt like he knew you. Get a good 3/4 ton Chevy Silverado duramax diesel turbo truck. We bought ours used in 2021. It's a beast (that's his name) it's pulling a 36 ft 5th wheel with no issues. 1/2 ton pickups are horrible for pulling travel trailers

It was the other vets fault for not doing more testing to make sure there's no health problems then he wouldn't even answer your phone calls that man shouldn't even be a vet..... So sorry for your lost... I had a horse that i got from a local friend and I gained her trust and we had many of adventures together and one day on my birthday I went to give her a treat and she never turned down a treat I called her but with no response so I thought she was just being stubborn but reality hit me when I saw her... That hit harder than I ever experienced before I had so many questions and she was perfect the day before and my answers I will never no ... And all I have is all the memories of the years that I had with her... But I thought I would share that with you....

I just saw your video. I know you hurt, I lost my puppy November 2019 and still have a hard time with it. I don't think I will ever get over it. Praying you can find peace, Its better they don't suffer, even tho we have the loss. I pulled a tag along rv and a 5th wheel all over the south east, loved it, but was always on the watch for troubles pulling them. Lucky enough I never had any problems. It was a wonderful time. At 73 years old my traveling time is over, but will always miss it.

My heart goes out to you two on the loss of Roomie. You experience took me back to the day 23 years ago when I had to make that choice with my J.D. she was full of cancer and it was time, but I sat in the car outside of the Vets office afterwards and cried like a baby. Roomie will be with you forever in your hearts, take my word on that. Great videos series by the way.

So sorry for the loss of your sweet friend. We too lost 2 dogs the first year of Covid. 1 to old age and 1 to a brain tumor at 11 years old. Like you we were broken and devastated.. I wonder if the Vet ever mentioned Valley Fever to you. This is a bacterial infection that comes from bacteria spores that live in the soil and is especially prevalent in the SW ie, NV, CA, AZ and is seeing an uptick even in the mid west. It’s almost always lethal to dogs which are especially prone because their noses are always to the ground. People get Valley Fever as well and although there is no cure they tend to recover and manage. It takes a long time to get over the loss of your pet but I hope your memories bring you some comfort.

Towing can be very stressful. As you found out, Ram 1500 pickups with coil suspension are not much for tow rigs as equipped stock. The last half ton pickup I had was a 1997 Chevy Silverado. I sold it for a 1993 GMC K2500 and later a 2001 C2500 silverado duramax. It’s what I tow with now. I have a 21’ hi low I towed with my 1/2 ton with no issue. I don’t even use the load distributing hitch with my 3/4 ton. I have a 32’ 1994 fleetwood fifth wheel that my late father bought to stay in on my 4 acre property when he visited. I used my 3/4 ton to move it when he bought it. I would not tow the fifth wheel with it on a regular basis. Even though according to the specs, it is within the safe parameters, I believe a 1 ton dually would be much safer, because of the extra stability and larger margin for safety.

I watched your 2 videos about the trials and tribulations you've went through in 2020. I must say you guys are definitely survivors and a tribute to the saying " just keep going". I cried with you when you told Roomie's story. He sounded like an amazing friend and I know how hard it was to make the decision you did. Over the years we've had to make the same decision more than once. It's never easy to let go of someone you love so much, but your love for them is what gives you the strength to let them go. Safe travels 🙏 💕 I look forward to your next video. 🙂

In this very dense and amazing adventure, 2020 absolutely was a year of much overcoming for you. Thinking about giving up everything is very natural for those who truly love and value the best that life offers us. The accident with the trailer, the separation from Roomie, for those who have the chance to get to know you better, you know how to recognize your strengths. All very intense, emotional story, sad yes, but full of truth. I love you both!

Ditto, so many others here in the comments. I lost 5 cats in 4 years, one we had had for 16 years, born the year we were married. The first one we had to put down, I cry like it's the same day, every time I think of each of those days... it never goes away, we move past the grief in longer spurts. Watching this, I cried again, like my heart could not take it again. It's truly devastating to lose a loved fur child. They are like our children. We never had kids. We now have 6 more, I would be lying if I didn't look at each one and feel my heart break again at the thought of losing them. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I was born and raised in Colorado (Denver metro area - mostly up north) its the saddest place to go in my heart. It's nothing like it was from my childhood to my early adulthood. Everything has changed its just awful. The state while still gorgeous, it's mountains and Rocky mountain beauty - the people have corroded it. Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana awesome places...I grew up vacationing in many of those places, we moved to Montana (Kalispell) for 7 years, it's our hearts home forever. I'm sad you stopped RVing here but I'm sure you have great reasons and are moving forward there with adventure. These days are so uncertain for us all over the world. May God bless you and keep you...

Absolutely agree Lisa and thank you for your thoughtful comment. This was the first time I really lost a pet (as a child I didnt understand) but wow it was difficult but still think the love that they give is worth the pain of the loss and would absolutely adopt another dog when the time is right but thankfully we still have Fritz :) Btw, this didn't stop us from RVing, we continued although in the next video, if I ever finish it :( , did result in us quitting but there is much more to that story. Thanks for watching!

Sorry that you lost one of your fur kids, it is very sad time and you have to mourn that loss. We had that happen back inSept or 2020. Our Taylor had cancer and there wasn’t much we really could do, it just kept growing. It was very sad time. He died at home and I was with him when he left us. My daughter helped me put him in the car (86lb) and we drove him to the pet crematory and they were awesome. They gave us envelope w his fur in it plus a foot print in clay and the put his ashes in a beautiful decorative wood box. I told my dad that I wanted another dog but I wanted a big standard poodle, but wasn’t ready yet for another dog yet. My dad agreed that I could get another dog if I wanted. But was not ready yet. Then in Aril 2021I lost my dad, still no pup yet, we went on vacation in october2021. When we got back started looking for standard poodles. Didn’t get one got a golden doodle F1B, more poodle. Loved him, Montgomery, then in May we ended up (2022) we ended up with our Roxy our Sheepdoodle F1B also. Love them so much but still miss my Taylor. Mourn your fur child then get another one.

I'm full-time and always ck when I go anywhere the closet ER VET as everything always happens on weekends it seems. I had a cat of 17yrs put down end of Nov and my 21 yr old put down Jan 5th. I luckily landed a camp spot 8 miles from a 24 hour vet. Not cheap but worth the extra when needed. I know they where old but feel the 16 yr old could have been saved but like you my decision time was so short and I still question my choice. During covid I drove 92 miles one way 2 week apart and for undisclosed illness believed to be cancer of my 18 yr old kitty. She was put to sleep of course on a Sunday. Now all my Sr. Cats are gone and I now have one cat much like your Fritz not liking all the attention I have to give.

So sorry to hear about Roomie, I cried for you and remembering what I felt as I put my dog down, as she had cancer and I asked the vet if she was in pain, she said yes and I immediately told the vet to put her down because I always said that you can't keep the dog alive for yourself, that's just selfish and wrong. . Watching the life leave her body. I never cried so much, so I really felt you pain and heartbreak 💔.

Anyone watching this video now and getting scared to pull a travel trailer. Make sure your pickup can safely tow your rig. Based on the photos, they upgraded from their crashed rig to a GD Imagine 2670MK which is 32' long with a GVWR of 8,500 lbs. Something this size can technically be pulled behind some half ton pickups but if you want to pull it safely and comfortably, you at least need a 3/4 ton pickup.

We had to put down our fur baby Golden Retriever Buck after 15 years of love. This was excruciating! We held him as he expired, but I can so identify. I think the hardest thought is that they are so completely dependent on their owners and you feel you have just let them down....there is nothing that can solice the way you feel in this situation. So Sorry for your loss, he's probably playing with our Buck somewhere over the rainbow right now!

My condolences to you for your loss. I know all too well how hard it is to lose your best friend. My Bonnie girl passed away from old age. I took her to the vet because she wasn't behaving like herself, including eating and the vet advised that I put her down, but I just couldn't do it. I took her home and she passed away naturally and peacefully that night, tucked up in her bed. I was absolutely distraught (it felt like a piece of me had died with her) and it took years for my heart to heal! I had taken her back to the vets and put her in a bag to be cremated, which was hard but something that was important for me to do. Whether you believe it or not, her spirit came to me one last time to let me know that she's been cremated and to say goodbye. I still feel her around me from time to time. R.I.P. Bonnie. R.I.P. your Roomie.

Went to the vet thinking I was coming home with her only to have to make that same decision you were faced with. I thought she would live forever and to only have her for 10 years was horrible. I feel your pain. You guys are so cute together. Hope all is well now😀

If u would have throttled your trailer brake control emergency brake button right there on ur trailer brake module. It's would have applied the brakes to ur trailer only and it would have pulled back on ur truck straightening u and the trailer out. The alternative is speeding up also causing the trailer to straighten up being pulled by ur truck harder. These big heavy hitches aren't the answer in my opion. The Hensley hitch is a pain in the ass to hook up from what I've heard

We had the same type experience with our girl Emmie, we are a blended family and Emmie was all of ours. She came to us to help us and 5 kids become family, I still tear up when I think about that day, and it was our anniversary. The sweet thing was it was pre covid and most of our large blended family was in the room with us. Emmie left with her entire family at her side. It is one of the toughest things to endure. I am just now considering adding to our family with a pup.

Ok. 2nd video watch. Literally was close to making a life or death decision about our dog today... worked out positively. Got me hooked how you got to Turkey. Remote working... envious... but also understand the discipline that goes with it. Will wait for the next video. I am very rural... so I feel that our life wasn't as impacted during the "pandemic" as others... totally get that... but I have been worrying about my employees throughout the years.

Hey Michael! Yes it absolutely take a lot of self discipline although it’s easier for others (I’ve been doing it for over 10 years). And when you have employees it absolutely adds another element because you would probably need to be on a similar schedule or timeframe to them but if you ever have any questions just let me know. I HIGHLY recommend Turkey. Such a beautiful country, people are amazing, food is delicious…I just can’t say enough good things about our experience here. Thanks for watching!

Re the hensley hitch: We bought a 30' trailer in 2017 and an F150 to pull it. All of the specs said that we could pull that trailer and even something much heavier. We bought a good weight distribution hitch as well but I couldn't get past the way the wind would push me around on the road. I was constantly correcting the steering wheel every time the road veered or the wind direction changed or when being passed by a semi. We researched this as well and after seeing the KYD video on the hensley hitch we bought one. We're in Canada, so paid very dearly for it. Long story short I found that it corrected all of my concerns. No trailer suck at all and it handled the wind just fine! We found the hooking up to be a bit more difficult and also when the truck and trailer were pointing up or down at the hitch point we had difficulty getting the trailer off the hitch and even more difficulty getting it back on once off. The truck and trailer had to be on the same plane or the "stinger" bound up in the shaft. Anyway all was well until we got caught by a bad cross-wind one day. It blew us , truck and trailer, right into the next lane. Fortunately no one was in the lane and we survived it all, but my confidence in the setup was broken. In the end we broke down and bought an F350 PSD. It actually weighs more than the trailer full-loaded. We scrapped the hensley and went back to the original weight distribution hitch. All has been well since. Last summer I almost clipped a curb taking a corner... just forgot I had a trailer back there. Not knowledgeable enough to preach to anyone about this subject, just throwin' my 2 cents worth into this. Happy travels everyone!!
@wanderinwhilewecan
@wanderinwhilewecan 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, first off, I just want to say that I am glad that there was no other traffic in the oncoming lane and you escaped any major accident there. Second, I would completely agree that the Hensley hitch while does eliminate trailer sway, if it is windy you will still pushed around. If I had a 3/4 ton truck like your upgrade, I wouldn't go with the Hensley hitch. It's too much money, and if you know how to use your trailer brakes, and you keep your speed down you will be fine with a normal anti-sway & weight distribution set up. When we were buying our trailer, our truck was in the shop and we needed to rent a truck. I got a Ford F350 and damn, it was so solid that when I finally got my Ram 1500 back, it was a HUGE difference. Don't get my wrong I love my Ram but there is no replacement than going with a bigger truck...it's just so dang expensive! Also, I had to laugh when you were talking about dealing with the hitching and unhitching of the trailer and that damn stinger! I had to break out my ruler EVERY time to make sure the hitch was at the right height to disconnect otherwise it would be such a pain in the butt. Anyway, really appreciate your comments and thanks for watching! Stay safe out there!

Yes, 150 models are not HD enough for heavier loads to pull. You can upgrade suspension, but weight distribution is key. Dealership selling trailers don’t care, they just want to sell the trailer.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experiences. I would have took the tire off and pulled the trailer at about 25 mph to a safe stopping place before I would have left it vulnerable like that. The one tire would have been overloaded but would have probably been OK for a few miles.

That's a great suggestion! We didn't know the area and how much we would have to drive to find a safe spot, it was also dark, and we were so tired that leaving the camper behind seemed like a good idea. Interestingly enough, we didn't get robbed at night, the camper was totally fine in the morning (when we came back to get more information to give to the insurance company), so when we had to drive back to town to get cell service to deal with the insurance, we assumed it would be fine during the day (our bad).

I'm crying because we too lost our dog on the road. I was stepping out of our motorhome, turned, and said "come" to our doxie (14lb). As quick as his feet touched the ground the neighbors pit bull, on a 10ft clothesline, came under their camper and grabbed my dog! In doing so he knocked his 80 yr old owner down, he hit his head on camper falling. I'm screaming and I have my dog in my arms and in that dogs mouth at same time. My husband got the dog off and helped neighbor up. I was inside checking for puncture wounds, none visible. He just wanted to get down. After half hr of me settling down and him wanting to go out to pee we went out. I immediately noticed he had labored breathing. Only vet 2 hrs. They were closing but said keep an eye call 24hr number if needed. He was fine until 1 am he threw up. Then 3 am he threw up alot and growled at me. We packed up and drove to vet and I had gut feeling he wasn't going to make it (my father was a vet for 50+ years) my husband thought he'd be fine. In the car I could tell his stomach was very solid but other then that he just slept all the way. They looked at him said they need to do labs, x-rays, urine, fecal, mri....could cost $3000 or more. I said do the x-rays (thinking maybe the dog broke my dogs ribs and punctured lung or something). Half hr later they came back with their laptop, put it on exam table, and told us he had internal injuries ..we could try surgery for thousands but he may never be independent IF he made it through surgery. We had a half hr with him and they gave him the shot on my lab on their floor. I couldn't leave him there in the middle of nowhere. We had him cremated and sent to my daughters house. He was our only dog so for the first time in my life I didn't have a dog. A few months later we got two dogs who travel in the motorhome full-time with us and our other dog still travels with us too! So sorry for your loss.

I have a 14 year old staff. 2.5 years ago I spent over 5k in tests/vet bills for 2 softball size masses in his neck. All tests came back negative but he was having trouble eating due to the location of the masses. I tried to get surgery done but no vets would touch my boy because the masses were right by the throat under his jaw. I was told that I should put him down. I told the vet give me 3 weeks to prepare for it and the appointment was set. I family friend called saying that she had a female runt puppy that no one wanted and that she was going to be put in a shelter. I told her that I'm coming up and that puppy is mine. I drove 4 hours north with my boy dog and picked up the puppy and brought her back home. 3 days b4 my boy was to be put down all the masses were gone. The girl puppy kept pawing and nibbling at the masses for 2.5 weeks(thought she was just playing with my boy). But she actually cured/got rid of whatever my boy had. I was so happy calling the vet and canceling that appointment. My boy now is 14 years old, has developed cataracts and joints hurt him from time to time but he still around. I know that every day I have with him is a blessing and I'm also picking up a rv in a week so we can have some good times and fun b4 his time comes. I dread that day.

Hi Dave - to this day we still are not exactly sure why the trailer started to sway. We think it was a rogue gust of wind but aren’t exactly sure. We had a weight distribution and anti-sway bar hitch equipped but that didn’t stop it unfortunately. Ultimately at the end of the day it was my fault for not educating my wife on using the trailer brakes which would have stopped the sway immediately. Obviously lesson learned and you can believe that Barbara never towed the trailer again!
