In this video Pete and I head down to Sydney in Renko to tow his Halvorsen 36 "White Crest" back to Dangar Island so we can start to repair the engine heat exchangers.

There have been a few questions about tow line length, so I'll add a pinned comment. We start with a shorter line in the harbour due to the high traffic and the calmer waters allowing us to get away with it. Longer lines are required once you get offshore as with both vessels riding on different parts of the swell it is possible for the towing vessel to be going down a wave face while the towed vessel is sliding down the back of a wave. This can cause hugh shock loads on the deck fittings if the line is too short. The catenary and weight of a long line protects against this. This effect can be increased by adding a weight to the centre of the tow rope. Longer lines also have a larger amount of shock-absorbing stretch available to dampen the shock loads. Ideally the tow line is a multiple of the wave length of the swell, but closer to shore this can be quite variable and hard to do.

i was thinking a floatie midway would help others know there is a tow line there. a consciensous boater would then give more berth unlike the wake shooter that passed you.

I realize it's no comparison but I have many memories of towing barges. I used to work in the U.S. Merchant Marine as an Engineer. For about a year-and-a-half of that time I did ocean-going tug/barge combinations, all over the world, some on the tow, some in the "notch" using the Auto-bar system. When on the tow the barge was several hundred feet aft. The line would run under the water for a long ways, it worked like a shock absorber. We never broke a line. The tugs averaged about a 150 ft in length and the barges were usually around 500 feet in length. It was a rough ride on the tow.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 3 жыл бұрын
A long line that doesn't leave the water certainly is a great shock absorber. I've had a few questions about why it is so long, I think I'll have to add a pinned comment!

It's good to hear that that big old Detroit pulling it's weight for a change, it sounded really good with a decent load. It usually sounds like it could use a higher gear when motoring along because it sounds a bit overpowered for that little boat. Something that surprised me was hearing yesterdays date on the weather forecast, it really makes a difference to get a time reference for a video and shows you finished and uploaded it the same day you towed the other boat back, I appreciate that kind of info a lot !

Back in my Navy years on board our submarine when we used nylon lines we would attach a short section of line to the main rode with a bow in it to measure the amount of stretch in the main rode by how tight the attached line had become due to the main rode stretching. Tight nylon lines can be a dangerous thing due to stored energy while in use.

Yes knowing what's wired, where, how and what with, the same for plumbing makes a HUGE difference in fault finding. I hate faulting other peoples' wiring!! That winch needs a large cap (capacitor) or something to stop the light flash. Or it's own isolated circuit. Get a real antenna for that radio :P it won't scratch so much then lol. Slingshot works well for washmaking asswipes!! OR Incendry arrows! Renko is doing well and showing the work put in ... nice work.

Great vid. Gramps taught us 3 splices; back, ring/eye and long/short (nomenclature on coast of Maine, anyway). These were invaluable, not just because of the usefulness of the individual splices but because with each new one we could then teach ourselves several others. I only realized much later the second lesson was more important, beyond boating. I’m teaching my kids now (8,11,14).

That boat at 22:55 definately break the rules of good seamanship! Adequate speed. Keep swell down. Leave room for towing vessels. Keep goo watch at all times.

Hey Stu, when you work on a motor, you will have one or two beers ( ok, maybe more) but when you tow, you seemed to refrain from adult beverages. I guess no drinking while driving. Thoroughly enjoyed this video, very entertaining.

Hi Stu, see if setting the GoPro to NTSC instead of PAL gets rid of that strobing on your sounder, I know it works for fluoro lights...
