The State should not be involved in contracts for Towing unless it's for THEIR property.

If so, everyone in the traffic jam has to pay the bill because it takes longer to clean up while the driver rings up different tow companies to compare quotes. State should contract a good towing service at fair rates. In my area authorities made a good deal for everyone.

Why would somebody pay off "Everyone" ?? .. that's the silliest thing I have heard in a while.. You pay the top dog, the rest has to follow the chain of command, no reason to pay anybody under the person you paid off initially. Or blame, for that matter, the everyday Joes, that are driving patrol cars, and making sure nobody gets hurt further are usually very normal people like us. If there is a bribe involved, it certainly isn't to the street cops, but somebody who has an authority to sign that contract. Maybe there wasn't though, cops just needed a reliable service to get things done, and a company offered just that. And honestly, when you are guaranteed business by a contract, why not charge a million bucks for it. Capitalism at it's finest. If nobody bought diamonds, they would a buck a dozen....

I've had that happen. I got run off the road and my van rolled. The police called their go to towing company. The towing company stole property out of my vehicle then told me I had to sign my van over to him in order to pay off my "storage fee's", from him leaving it in a field near his house. I decided instead to sign it over to a junk yard which gave me 4 times what the storage fees were and towed it off his property at no cost to me. I figure he was going to sign it over to a junk yard as soon as I signed it over to him and pocket the difference. (Don't believe anyone if they tell you a totalled out vehicle is worth less than $100, the scrap value will always be more than that.) I also had property stolen out of the van by the "tow company" (it was just one guy with a tow truck and a field). I informed them that I was filing a claim with Amazon of a "lost" kindle, and the first time it was connected to Wi-Fi, whoever had it would be prosecuted. Complete BS, but they bought it, and gave my Kindle back.

the tow truck industry has got to be regulated. too many companies are taking advantage of citizens in need. many many years ago, I drove a tow truck while working at a paint and bodyshop. I watched and listened as my boss would laugh after reaming a customer on the tow charges. he had no remorse whatsoever. I towed a 84 year old woman's car after she broke down on the highway. took her home and dropped the car at the local dealership to be fixed. a 12 mile round trip. he charged over $400. that was in 1978. she was retired and living on her social security and whatever else her dead husband left her. she cried her eyes out when she found out how much he charged her. when she left, the bastard laughed and said she was too old to drive anyway. i guit two weeks later. there are thousands of people out just like him. bring on the regulation against predatory towing. and by the way, I made $4.00 an hour at that time. it didnt take but about an hour to complete the job. do the math.

@jdrancho1864
@jdrancho1864 6 жыл бұрын
Seeing how they are the only ones allowed on the scene, I'm not sure how they can charge for that, unless they pro-rate it against every vehicle they tow. The lady interviewed had a good point in that the tow did not involve righting an over-turned or jack-knifed rig. It was a simple hook-up and drive-off. Also, her tow company would have taken the rig to a shop. Now she has to pay for a second tow to a dealership.

I was recently tasked by my employer to go pick up one of our trucks (with an empty dry van attached) that had been sitting in a storage yard for about 2 weeks after the driver had some sort of medical issue and hit a guardrail with it. Total cost for the 17 mile tow AND 2 weeks of storage? Just under $4000. And this was a police directed tow as well. $10k for a couple hours work and overnight storage is insane. Shame on those asshats for doing their damndest to make a bad situation worse! ***Edit*** Full disclosure... The above happened in VA and not in Detroit. So maybe there's some extra $6000 fee or tax imposed in Michigan. Not.

+Matt Lane You;re right, Gramps. For the lady affected by the tow, this is water under the dam. My interest was in the federal angle, the fact that this is happening on a stretch of road that is a designated part of the US interstate highway system. Any time the Feds are involved, the rules (Davis-Bacon Act, WMB contracting, minority workforce participation, Affirmative Action, TWIC certification et al.) change. That means a challenge to the existing contract with an eye towards compliance with US law cannot be dismissed out of hand. I understand you're busy and can't spend all day typing KZfaq comments, so I'll give you a pass on the spelling. Just promise you know the difference between 'their', 'they're', and 'there' and will use them correctly the next time you post anywhere online. You simply HAVE to take the time to get it right.

Let's see, this is the USA, which is a free market capitalist country. The owner of the crashed truck is a private business entity with their own towing company on contract. That towing company is barred from doing business with their client because the state police have a contractor of their own. The contractor favored by the police charges three times the price of the truck owner's contractor. There is only one explanation and that is corruption. It would be nice if our courts would reflect this and overturn all such contracts which favor one company over another. It is incumbent for any restricting or favoring agency to prove a need for their restrictions or favoritism. Anything less is corrupt and a violation of our rights. Both the owner of the contracted towing company and the bureaucrat or politician who forced a private citizen to buy from that contractor should be imprisoned as enemies of our free country.
@mattlane2282
@mattlane2282 6 жыл бұрын
Or, maybe jackass, to tow on that road you must win a bid... (more overhead now) you likely must have X number of trucks ready and available 24/7 in X min of getting called out... I know the 3500$ tow company has no contract costs... and may or may not even have enough trucks to win the contract... most costs = more charge on the bill... simple. you want the road closed forever, go with your way, if you have AAA around here and the AAA contracted company is going to take over 30min and your in anyway blocking the road (this is for non contract roads) your getting the next on the list called out. They aint waiting 1 hour for your AAA truck to get there... same shit goes here. Don't like it, tell the state to stop making companies PAY to work a road.

Matt Lane, You just gave up this debate before you even started due to your unprofessional and unintelligent name calling. A difference of opinion with you does not constitute a lack of intelligence on any person's part. On your point of longer wait times and increased traffic jams, there is no reason why a person or business who has a contract with a particular tow company should not be able to use the services of that company, as long as they are timely. After all, the truck owner's tow truck showed up at about the same time as the police department's chosen company. So, your idea of longer wait times goes right out of the window. There is nothing wrong with having more than one company allowed to tow their client's vehicles away from a major accident scene. A little competition is just what a capitalist society such as ours is all about. What is described in this video is pure unadulterated government corruption which resulted in a three times higher tow price for the unfortunate accident victim. No government agency has the right to bar a competent and qualified business from operating in their field of expertise just to favor a business that is in bed with the politicians who happen to be in office at the time. There has to be a genuine reason to allow only one contractor to do business with the public in a particular location. An example of such a situation would be the concession stand at a public park. A tow company is not one of them. In this case, there would have been absolutely no harm in allowing the particular trucking company's chosen tow vehicle to tow their truck. It would have caused zero delay. The news crew here in this video have done a great job proving that Boulevard and Trumbull Towing has been involved in all sorts of dirty dealings with various political entities. This is not simply a case of having higher costs due to meeting contract requirements. A thee times higher price than one's competent competitors is never justifiable.

BLah blah blah you gave up on this debate when you said "There is only one explanation and that is corruption." You have an opinion I have facts from being around the biz. You have what like 7 trucks there that need to be towed. Okay great now the cops are running around asking each driver who is coming, how long, eta. If the first trucks tow company is 35 min out while the company behind his is 10min out... and another truck does not know if the company has a truck available... it becomes chaos... now if someone sends out one heavy to tow it and finds out they need 2, we are waiting now for a second dispatch because the person in the accident never know what they need or how bad the vehicle is. You just turned a, hook a leave into a circus of 4 companies all trying to sort out who is taking what. This happens with CARS when you get someone who does not know how to tow, I've seen operates from other companies LOAD cars because they were tired of waiting. Not the best plan as someone can try to pass the buck now saying XYZ from company Y did the damage but on roll overs etc... who cares. That on the scale of tractor trailers LOL. Not to mention you have no idea who is doing what, it becomes dangerous, a decent company doing heavy recovery everyone knows there part and they may even have headsets on for communication. Again vs a circus of 4 companies all with different ETAs... Ya you have a reason to have ONE company cover the scene... you cry about 3x the price, yet for all we know that ONE person has 1 heavy... where this company may have 6... and that ONE heavy is not around all the time where as the contracted company has trucks on standby 24/7 different level of service DIFFERENT PRICE. A "decent" auto accident here is 1k billed out, roll over depending on how long it sits 2-3k... and before you cry, that's a fair rate, when you get fucked its 5-6-7k for a REGULAR CAR... of course you have a 20 min response time from the time you get the call till on scene... and your allowed to miss 3 calls a year before being tossed off the rotation. Know what this means... you have a truck sitting and a driver on call 24/7/ 365 (you don't get any days off) JUST to go get a police accident. You are allowed customer request (and that is how the pay offs work here) if the ETA of the company is generally over 30min for a minor accident or over 20 for a road closed... your getting next off the list (if things work as they should) and even with that 20min time, the cops will call and ask to expedite!, generally if the road is closed OR if the vehicle must be stabilized before EMS/FIRE can help. Oh btw this is all unbid, the local highway you bid... I think its like 250k a year (idk how they even make money off that) you must have at LEAST 3 trucks (only light/med not heavy as its a passenger car only highway) and you are on call 24/7 with 3 trucks. Yep that's cheap right to have 3 vehicles on call 24/7 with a response time, and 250k off the top... before you say the bidding is bullshit (yep I'm with you on that) other locations put you on for X time, and rotate that way again ONE COMPANY at a time so it is not chaos at the scene... You again need X number of trucks on call. It is a money intensive business. Oh man and if bad weather hits... I've seen calls from am hour away road side trying to get tows... then... when its sunny 70f weather for 2 weeks the phone won't ring for PDAA or road side. It's worse with heavies... Half the time when a med duty truck calls around asking for a tow (idk about heavy)... give you a recent example "I just slid off the driveway in the mud and need to be towed out" head out for a WINCH OUT... turns into call the local heavy company, call the cops, truck is against a sign, property damage, need 2 trucks to pull him out with out causing more damage to private property sign. SAME thing is gona happen on major highways... your gona call in your company for a tow... say XYZ, they show up with 1 truck... find out they need 2... vs one company comes with all hands on deck... Also alot of the time when you get calls for "accidents" the people are trying to NOT call the cops as it is a PDAA... ya its easier in that case for TIME reasons to have one company on hand. It will take LESS TIME no matter how you slice it to have company doing clean up. It is also MUCH safer as everyone knows whats going on and know each other as they work together vs 4 random companies all trying to work around each other.

Matt Lane, Thank you for confirming what I suspected! It seemed a rational assumption from your angry first response that you are "in the business." Your second response improves upon your first response due to no name calling. You do, however, declare that I have given up on the debate by declaring that "there is only one explanation and that is corruption." I stand by my word. If you view the entire video again, you will find that the particular towing company and the involved police chief have both been investigated for corruption. There is ample evidence to suggest that this is the case. While all of your other explanations make sense for some price variation, they don't explain a three times variation nor do they justify chasing away a heavy tow truck which is all ready to tow a broken heavy vehicle on a technicality alone. At all accident scenes of this magnitude, the police will interview every conscious victim. There is no reason why tow trucks of appropriate size and purpose cannot be dispatched by the police to tow vehicles. You stated that the police already do have companies on call 24/7/365. How could it hurt to call a victim's chosen company if they are local and available at the same time as the police favorite? If a conscious driver states that they already have a properly qualified truck on the way with a reasonable ETA, there is no reason to bar that truck upon arrival. In this day and age of cell phones, and advanced computers, there is no reason other than greed and desperation for multiple uninvited tow trucks to race to the scene of a small crash. With all of our advanced applications available, there is no reason why some form of local crowd sourcing application cannot be applied to the local tow companies so that they do not have to purchase excessive over capacity. I am not suggesting that a huge and chaotic collision scene should have to wait for one tow truck to pull the lead vehicle out due to customer choice, even as the chosen contractor has equipment available. I am stating that as long as a customer's tow shows up in order, as an American citizen, they have every right to make their choice. All of the logistical points you demonstrate make sense, Matt Lane. You won't catch any disagreement from me there. The logistical points alone do not prove by themselves that it is impossible or even impractical to have more than one contractor to show up with equipment to tow broken vehicles away from a collision scene. If there are six broken vehicles at a scene, the police will know within a minute or two which drivers are conscious, and what size tow truck(s) is/are needed for each vehicle. The police will also know if any driver has already selected a local tow company. If a driver has called their own contractor, the police only need confirm an ETA and location with that contractor to determine if that ETA is acceptable. The police can then assign contracted towing companies for those who don't have a selected contractor. It is the police who ultimately direct heavy rescue, ambulance, and tow vehicles once they arrive at a scene. There is no reason why a locality cannot have multiple tow companies of various sized and purposes on call on rotation so that everybody gets some business, reasonable breaks, and no requirement to have excessive overcapacity. If a locality insists on having one tow company on call 24/7/365, they might as well have the local government own all of the tow equipment and have all of the operators on the public payroll, especially if it legitimately costs three times normal for a tow, which is doubtfull in just about any normal case. The bottom line here is that if the highway tow business is distributed between multiple tow companies in an intelligent and organized manner, everybody will earn a decent living without having to have excessive overcapacity and workers on overtime. Companies will maximize equipment use with normal commercial towing plus emergency highway towing. As an added plus, conscious accident victims will be able to exercise choice if they wish. If you look at the responses here to this video, and the news report as well, you will see that the public does not see things your way, Matt Lane. The public only sees that a business owner was denied his choice of tow companies by the police, whose chief has been proven to have been involved in a series of conflicts of interest with his chosen tow company. Since any private business owner wants good public relations, it stands to reason that tow truck operators want to avoid this sort of bad press at all costs. It is far better to address the logistical problems and avoid public backlash. The public, as guided by the press, sees only the corrupt police chief being paid off by the corrupt tow company owner. There is a companion video to that effect which provides ample evidence that Boulevard and Trumbull has been involved in some very shady dealings with more than one government official. That is why I stand by my statement that the only explanation for this outrageous pricing difference depicted here is corruption.

My state doesn't have a contract company. Tow companies apply to be on a list. The company is inspected and if they pass they are on that list and the list is a rotational list. The first company on the list is called and have 20-30 minutes to arrive on scene. Once they are called their name goes to the bottom of the list and the next on the list is first call for next accident. When I drove tow truck, the state police would call our cellphone, give us the details and start the clock. If you failed to show up in the 20-30 minute time frame told many times....you were removed from the list.

I just lost my entire post.:) So to recap, in brief: You are confusing pro bono with contingency fee. A lawyer will only take a contingency-fee case if there is a very good chance of collecting on a substantial judgment, which is not the case if you sue the state. They will defend the case until the end of days or until your money runs out, whichever happens sooner. Companies move or shut down every day for any number of reasons. It won't bother the state at all and they will never draw a connection between that and an excessive tow bill.

In CA the tow companies must be approved by CHP to become a rotation tow. They must meet certain standards to be included. Big rig tows are even more stringent. There is a time limit to respond to the scene and get the road open. That bill sounds excessive.

Speaking from being In towing for a while now. Where I am state contracts cover specific areas. Turnpike parkway specific highways. The towns. And county's hire tow company's for police towing. They have a specific amount of time to respond or else it goes to the next company. For heavy wrecks. Semi trucks. (At least in my area) a company with a heavy wrecker is on rotation until they are called. Then it's a whole cycle again. They might not get a call for months. But when a wreck happens they get the call. Where a normal wreck which can be take. Care of by a flat bed or medium duty is usually on for a week and that's it. For police towing such as this. The companies don't make the towing rates. It's what ever the town,county and state say is fair

They need a rotation policy. Here in Louisiana, the prices for Police involved tow calls (local, sheriff, and state) are all regulated by the state. Hookup charge, hourly rates, recovery, and fuel surcharge for light, medium, and heavy calls. Each municipality has a rotation list. When the cops call the tow company, it's a no preference call meaning that the police pay for the tow (they get reimbursed of course) if they have an impound lot. If they don't have an impound lot, the cars owner or insurance company takes care of the bill to the tow yard that it's stored on. If you do have a preferred company that you want to use, you can just pay the police rate yourself. The state regulates prices for daily storage, covered and non covered, for all tows. This keeps it really fair, and if they have a problem with the price, they can take it up with the state.
