Saw him at the Speakeasy in NYC after AT My Window came out. I was a few feet away from him and didn't know much about Townes. I sat there stunned through the entire set. The most powerful singer/songwriter I've ever had the privilege of experiencing.

Everyone talks about the brilliance of Townes Van Zandt singing-songwriting, and guitar playing but what about his storytelling, one of the very best storytellers of all time, As the great Rory Gallagher would say to his audience after a blistering gig/concert, Rory would say Thanks A Million for coming to the show, Will I say thanks a zillion Townes

Saw Townes some in the 70s when I lived in Austin, but rarely in later years. This two-part video starkly shows where he ended up -- where the road of someone following his own genius, inner voices and dreams can lead. It can lead to high, and low, places. I wonder if the trips to the high places were worth slogging through the low ones. I hope they were for him. He sure left some beautiful things for the rest of us.

He was so smart, so handsome, so much heart... his lyrics are amazing, and what a great fingerpicker! He must've been easy to fall in love with...but absolute hell to live with or love long-term. I feel so sad for his children, but I'm glad he had them; I'm sure he was, too.

This is reminiscent of seeing Townes at the Ark, in Ann Arbor, months before he left us. You can feel the brilliance and the pain, sometimes simultaneously. That night in Ann Arbor, when he finished "Katie Belle Blue" he said he was so happy that Jerry-Jeff didn't write it. I laughed profusely, while others nearby didn't see the humor. Thank you for the words put together Townes. Nobody can do it quite like you.

@@AtkaEve2 I saw him in a small club in Austin in 1980 -- pleasure and pain all at once. To see and listen to one of the greatest poets/artists/soulists ever to stumble onto this earth. To experience in the flesh the man who sang my heart for years....and the pain of hearing and seeing him so obliterated with alcohol and/ or drugs he couldn't even finish his gig. And not feel one ounce of judgement or pity, knowing first hand similar sources and intensity of feelings too hard to withstand. Wondering if I'm grateful to have always been spared even the temptation of easing the pain with abusive substances because they don't work in my body (thank you Mama)... or if I would trade places with Townes, if I could turn the pain into music and words with even a tenth the genius of his. Bob Dylan is truly blessed to have this rare gift alongside an equally rare constitution hardy enough to handle it. Earth is poorer and heaven richer with those who like TVZ were taken too soon.
