You might think about getting you some airbags fir the rear wheels with a compressor and that way you can also use it to inflate your tires when they need air.

I was a CDL hotshot... would have been all over that load. That said, I once loaded an oversize load in Tulsa that was 14 and a 1/2 feet tall. Had my permit which said get out of town get on the freeway and go basically. No turn by turn directions. Turned out I couldn't get out of town because no matter what road I took there was a low bridge. Ended up rejecting the load.

Hey Alex, I've been watching your channel since you started it, great job on the videos and content. Since you have so many miles in both Ford and Ram HD's I would love to see your opinion on what is good or bad about both trucks for hotshot drivers. I think one of your videos you referenced only being able to get a Ram from Enterprise and your drivers were disappointed because they preferred a Super Duty, but then again, you just purchased a Ram for yourself so I would like to see your preference. Thanks.

I am currently researching switching to this career. I know with a CDL I would be able to carry a higher load. However, my question is, would a higher load pay off, given that you will probably be spending more money on maintenance & most definitely gas. AND will you be able to get a higher load with a truck anyway? Any links to resources are appreciated. I would like to hear your experience. EDIT: Would dispatchers be able to give you a higher load? any resources you can link would be helpful to my decision. And even if they can book you a load for that, wht about a silimar trailer, will it be able to support such a load? Thanks.

The bottom line truth is a cdl opens alot of doors. When you partial your trailer out, and im a hoe for partials, you usually run out of weight before you run out of deck. Cdl means not passing up that super sweet partial cuz youll bust 26k a cdl also means you can pull a trailer thats heavier and built stronger, 10/12k axles and brakes versus these single wheel axles that i swear are gonna snap on every pivot. Just moved up from a trailer like alex has to a 22gn and im in love, it rides and stops sooo much better. Id suggest get up and running non cdl and then study your butt off and take your cdl test. Your letting money escape otherwise.

@@cbundy53ness Thanks for your comment! I have been looking into that, however, one of my Owner-Operator Friends is literally making the same as him as CDL driver in a semi-truck * he literally drives as much as he does if not more, he is literally not home. I am not aiming to shoot down the CDL route, I am just looking for someone that can confirm that CDL addition is beneficial.
@cbundy53ness
@cbundy53ness 3 жыл бұрын
Not being home is part of the game unfortunately, i am never home, and when i am its never long enough to get all my home stuff done. Theres several other bonuses for going cdl, mainly a discount on insurance rates, insurance companies are pretty weary of non cdl hotshot drivers due to the exceptionally high number of idiots that have taken to driving. Ive come across a few brokers who will ask if your cdl and wont work with you if your not for the same reasons. Too many idiots messing up loads. Ive heard a couple stories of cali CHP messing with hotshotters and impounding their trailers if the gvw of the trailer is over 10k. Which is the law for cali residents and shouldnt apply to otr hotshot but apparently they doing so anyway. Honestly there is no good reason why a O/O semi would be making less than an O/O hotshot, unless they are just being inefficient somewhere either in filling their trailer, booking worthwhile loads/partials, or just cant keep them lot lizards out of the truck. Always remember, we sell deck by the foot, not the pound. Dont go cdl to chase weight, go cdl to chase space. And heavy stuff better be paying. 53ft is 13ft more feet of real estate over a 40'. The xtra weight capacity is just a cushion to help fill it. Im not in anyway suggesting you go get your cdl first thing, experience is king and getting it is alot safer for everybody on the road at 26k vs 40-80k. But know where you wanna end up and constantly work towards it

Sounds like the US needs to do what has been done in Australia - "Chain of Responsibility" legislation. If a truck is found heavy on the road by the Mermaids, the owner and operator of the truck, and everyone involved with that load are hauled over the coals and prosecuted. As an example: In 2007 / 2008, a New South Wales company was found guilty of accepting 300 overloads / overweights into their receival sites. The Mermaids done an audit, and a fine of $9 million was levied against the receivers and the senders / transport operators. This could have been reduced if the scales were tested in a different manner, but, the receivers did not want to listen to knowledge, so they have paid the price. Alex, just as a thought: When you are getting items like that, look at the forklift that is loading you. Do not be frightened to ask the people loading you as to their guestimate of the weights involved, as they are doing this sort of thing, day in and day out. Alarm bells should have been ringing when a larger than 4,000 lb forklift was loading you. Also, if you get done again for 'heavy haulage without a permit', let me know, as there is a good probability you can get off an overweight ticket by using a bit of knowledge. The knowledge is appliccable world wide, so it will work anywhere! My experience with transport relates to building materials. Limestone from one quarry was moved when wet, so you would have pallets that would go over 6,000 lb, instead of 4,500 lb. Put 6 pallets on, and you find that you are heavy! As a result of doing 'monos' with the forklift, a new forklift was purchased, and set up to lift 6,750 lbs... Ultimate test of the new forklift was driving up a 2 in 9 slope, with a 4,000 lb pallet of bricks on the back, and still having positive control on the steering. So you know, forklifts were mounted on 40 to 60 h.p. tractors, behind the large rear wheels. Too much weight would result in the front wheels becoming airborne! You would then steer the tractor by using the independent rear brakes. Scary to watch, but great fun to do! Just have to remember to keep the pallet within a foot of the ground!!!

@@markbremmer8642 that's what I was figuring too, 19.5 8 lug direct bolt-ons. I was hoping he knew specifically what aftermarket company the original guy got them from. The 4500's and F450 19.5s are 10 lug as far as I know.

@@Itsa_Mea I believe the F450 pickup has a 8 lug rim. Not sure. BigTruckBigRV has a F450 with 19.5 factory rims that look like Alcoa rims, but are a Ford product. Also Alex mentioned in a previous video that he ran 19.5 on his old truck and didn't like them. Probably because it was a single wheel, not a dual wheel.

I noticed that’s a mega cab 8 foot box is that custom-made or are they just made in the states because we don’t have that here in Canada unless you build it yourself

Manufacturer wont do it despite people wanting it. Its a kit where they cut the frame on the megacab truck and swap the box along with extend the lines. They wint do it as RVers are limited to 65ft truck nose to tail of trailer

If you did have a cdl though, you could have renegotiated the rate and charged a whole lot more than 2500 bucks

If those are 8k's the trailer was probably fine but really have watch that pin weight and drive axle with a 1-ton. Even if you had a CDL and the power unit was plated for it that would have been a bad idea with that equipment.

Sadly nobody is held accountable for understating weight on loads. That load should have been posted CDL flat bed

I have a class 1 out of central Canada in the Prairies and owned my own truck for about 15 years and ran long haul all over Canada and a lot of the States so until watching hot shot videos about cdl and non cdl never thought much about it. Is there a benefit to being non Cdl or do you open yourself up to more regulatory BS and expense being cdl. Also being cdl would you not have more loads to pick from on the load boards which would mean less sitting and waiting at truck stops. Nice to see your positive energy which is always better when things go wrong because a lot of times you can't change things so getting angry really doesn't change anything.

I think it's more just using the correct tool for the job situation. If you want to haul heavy then get a class 8 truck and go. I know new dually pickups "can" tow over 30k but will anyone argue they can do it every day for 500,000 miles or more with fewer problems than a big rig? Alex is doing hotshot the way it's intended. Hauling the smaller loads that don't need a semi. Also if Ram and Ford were built to do the same job as a Pete then you know we'd be seeing the commercials on TV about how Ram and Chevy outperform the Pete lugging heavy loads up a mountain, lol. As Alex has proven over the years, he is using the correct tools for the job required by many people. Seems like it's working out for him so far.

big thing, less costs. if he GCWR at 43K his fuel nand maintance cost would be insane, and only making 10-20 cents more per mile. 100% not worth it.

so did they compensate you at all for driving there and loading it on their error? honestly i would of told them the discrepancy and if they made the rate suit the load and a little extra for the risk id run it but its not my license on the line, safety and equipment point of view you were all good, maybe pull the spreaders to the rear and pallets up front to lighten the rear axle, slightly over on trailer axles but on nice smooth interstates theyll do 25% over rating all day just run it 5mph slower

So did you get any pay? You did load, secure, moved it. It was near 5x the weight you were told... Ok heard $250. Hope you didn’t drive empty far. I wondered if the center, the pallets were removed if you might have hit under 26
