Yeah, I recently got into the hobby and quickly found that the local warhammer crowd are the most insular, hostile group of adults I have ever encountered. Common social cues like greeting and introducing myself seemed alien to them. Seems weird that a niche hobby group would be so averse to finding new people interested in what they do and wanting to participate.

I’m so glad my local games workshop is so good and old school. Nicest bloke you’d ever meet in Warhammer. Despite there being a 3rd party hobby store nearby as well, he makes me want to purchase from him rather than at a discount.

What’s so sad is that the experience I’ve had with the AoS tournament scene has only been awesome. The AoS folks are always a jam to hang out with, we go out and get drinks after the first day and everyone is really there to have a great time. I’ve never had the same experience with 40K. It’s a similar game but totally different culture. My local meta has a few of the players from the worlds team as well so it almost doesn’t get sweatier in terms of how competitive they are. Even then, everyone just has a great time together and are actually trying to meet new friends and build relationships.

I sometimes join local tournaments if in bored, recently did a kill team tournement for the first time (placed 4th usually I'm last lol) and the kill team guys were absolutely a joy to be around, one of my opponents was my friend trying out the cultists pre-nerf and we gave each other a challenge (I run krieg) it really depends on the area I've found, the store I worked at hosts a fantasy battle tournament monthly and all of those guys are fun to just chat with!

@@hereticalpaintjobs I just find it sad that the competitive scene gets the reputation it has only because of mostly the 40k community. Which is unfortunate, but as ive seen its just true. I wish more people gave AoS a go if they are unhappy with 40k because its hard to explain how much of a different culture it is. Conversion armies are so welcomed, people play to have fun, and the design of the game is much less frustrating. Theres still a giant skill ceiling. Idk. I love 40k and i just wished i had the same feeling about the community but i dont. Every time i play a game of 40k i just wished i was playing AoS instead. Its not because i think 40k had bad rules or anything like that, its just that i enjoy my time more playing AoS. How i explain it to my friends is that 40k feels like the League of Legends of tabletop gamming, and if you know anything about that community it would probably be something most people agree with.

i genuinely find AOS to be the best thing GW has done in years - i find the light hearted setting with its sense of humour to be such a breath of fresh air in this realm of constant emo grimdark.........i literally didn't know i was missing that in my hobby until it happened.

I assume that manager charging for tables was a bluff to get them out. Alot of flgs in my area are debating on charging for tables to just help cover costs or buy at least a drink per hour you are there
@Drazakhan_Dynasty
@Drazakhan_Dynasty 11 ай бұрын
Why not free tables (pretty much just a mat and some rocks) and then premium tables that have been master crafted by the shop and the community that you have to pay to book, or just have a membership program where you get a free drink per week, first priority access to tables in the booking system, and first place on preorders.
@Andy_Ryan

I have been gently costing setting up a gaming store and thinking about this, I think the deal I would do is a "free table if you buy something" attitude - with offering drinks and snacks for sale too. The thing you want to avoid is folks taking up tables and using your facilities but not giving anything back to the store.

have to say i absolutely adore your love for the lore. to me thats what its always been about, i got into the hobby in 3rd grade at 8 yrs and have been collecting painting playing for 26 years, with breaks here and there. im not sure if i have ever won a game but i take thematic lists that are fun to me and i couldnt be happier 😂

It makes no sense to me that GW creates a game like 30k/40k/Fantasy and then refuses to allow those games to be played in their stores and chases off managers that do let it happen. Seems completely backwards from what a company should do.

When Pete went to a tournament looking for good casual play, he knew he'd fucked up. FLGS is the best place to find like-minded people like that. I've found that big tourneys are the antithesis of this. Some of the best games of HH I've had are at my FLGS narrative games days, great bunch of people, great games.

These stories are kinda eye-opening for gws pratices when it comes to stores now, before in 7th and 8th my local gw was always used to be full on weekends it was warm and homely if that made sense. I came back to the gw after covid and it just felt off and i think this video really placed a finger on it just seems more corporate

27:10 Would at this point GW not make more money in the long run by not having these stores and just burnsink money into them and all the wages for the staff, the trainers, the regional managers, etc? Their metrics for how new people get in don't make sense, their desired staff is atrocious, their desired store policies are detrimental. This company can only learn from a brick in the face as drastic as the atari-videogame-crash.

I got that same “is that all” *sigh* in a store, I said “oh sorry if it’s that much hassle don’t bother” and walked out, now I occasionally pop in pick up boxes, finger through accessible books and generally look around for about 20 minutes putting him through his sales song and dance…then don’t buy anything 🤷🏼‍♂️ he’s stopped coming over to me now but I can still sense his regret at being a bell end knowing it’s why I won’t buy things from his store

My FLGS allows gaming (of all types) and when the owner opened a full suite gameroom he said it was a " Cheat Code to make money.". GW are morons Why does anyone play GW games when the company has all the charm and grace of an ice water enema? Keep your models play OPR and let GW die on the vine.

Stick to doing the silly voices organically. I often do voices for things for the same reasons as you, and frequently, when my girlfriend has friends round she'll say "do that voice for [friend's name]!" and it's horrible being put on the spot and forced into it - just feels wrong.
