This is what gives me hope in our younger generations...Even in other countries, teenagers can SEE what problems need to be fixed in our societies rather than fall pray to the same mentality as what our parents taught us. Each generation learns from the ones before. It's okay to think "outside the box" because that's where ALL the best ideas are found! :) Love and Light!! :)

re: comparing children with other children. this one really made a great impact on me negatively growing up. You are getting compared to someone that has a different environment, starting point, and even support may it be financial or emotional support. I started to rebel and started to compare my parents and siblings to others (well not verbally). Like why is it only I that is getting compared? You raised me and wanted me to excel at stuff since other people excel at it. But when I started to try and even pursue what I wanted or what I was good at, all I got were words of discouragement since it was an additional expense or I should spend my time doing chores since they were busy working. Like I don't know anymore. I know what I should do but it's hard when the family, including relatives, tells you there's no use in trying or that you can't make it since a, b, c, etc... is way better than you.

I totally get the whole utang na loob thing. My mom has always treated me as the black sheep, and now she’s asking me to repay her for everything she bought for me as a baby. She’s also demanding that I take care of her when she’s older, but she’s always yelling at me. I told her, sarcastically, that if she wants me to help her when she’s old, she should start being nicer to me.

The crab mentality “trait” reminded me of the teaching re: the 7 Deadly Sins & their “remedies”. It is an old teaching. I see the main root of crab mentality as envy & insecurity/lack of self esteem or confidence. Oversimplified, but I think it applies a lot of the time. The traditional remedy that was taught in my day to combat envy was 2-fold: 1-gratitude for one’s blessings & 2-ability to admire & appreciate others’ talents & gifts. I don’t know if envy is more prevalent in Philippine culture, I don’t have the data or experience to have a strong opinion, but envy is universal & we will never eradicate it. Maybe we can lessen its prevalence, but people have to recognize the fault in themselves & be motivated to change. & even recognizing it in our selves is difficult sometimes, even when one has dealt with it over long lives. I think all we can do is teach our children what envy is & how it can lead us to wish to tear others down, it is comforting; but that there are more efficient & satisfying comforts. & also try to teach them the 2 remedies of recognizing their own blessings & how to appreciate & admire others (preferably admire their good actions & traits & blessings; not just their looks or riches - but those aren’t bad they are blessings too-just not the ONLY blessings). Like the song lyrics: 🎶🎵”teach your children well”& keep striving one’s self

Also, that comparison toxic. Ang hirap talaga kpg lumaki ka sa mga magulang na hindi alam paano i-encourage at i-motivate yung mga anak nila na hindi sila kinokompare sa ibang tao. Nung nag-early adulthood na ako, I compare them to others to show them how it feels when someone does the same to you. Ang nararamdaman ko nung madalas akong i-compare sa ibang tao ko noon, is puro tampo, galit, kawalang ganang magseryoso sa pagaaral, lalong nad-downgrade, nawawalan rumespeto, nakakaumay.

I'm not sure or maybe I just didn't notice before? But as far as I know, there's no 'cancel culture' before. But since, most people nowadays are on social media. And people heard that there was a int'l celeb most probably in SoKor, the filipinos adapt it too. Its like they think it is good when someone against to their stand or did something against their belief.

I don't get the one who correlated crab mentality to his political belief "that he paints the other side the evil ones, that the other side doesn't want the country to succeed". No matter the political belief of a person whether you perceive it as right or wrong, at it's core he/she wants a better country. Toxic trait: Too politically bias that people tend to forget to be kind and understand the other people's view whether it's right or wrong in their perception. Anyway I'm not gonna reply to any replies on this post cause it's just gonna create toxic discussions.

One toxic Filipino habit is mahilig kumain at matakaw. Every meal is more than 1 rice. Then may meryenda pa, and snacks in-between meals. Kung ayaw ma-body shame, wag kasi masyado matakaw. It's for your own good anyway. Eating too much leads to obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, cancer, etc.

Man, I feel like I need therapy after watching this. I feel vindicated because the younger generations are pointing out these toxic traits. I'm Gen X and I have to say I ALWAYS thought it was me. I was never smart, pretty, rich, good enough. I currently refuse to go to family get-togethers because they were all a pissing contest of who makes the most and who is the prettiest. Now that I have my own kids I refuse to accept that toxic mentality for my kids. If my family or relatives call my kids fat I will make sure you know that is not appropriate. Respect be damned. If you can't respect me or my kids don't expect that I will respect you just because you're older. Respect is ageless. I have always been the black sheep because I choose to live in a world of kindness and acceptance. I don't care if you are black, white, or Asian. I don't care if you're gay or straight. I don't care if you are homeless, rich or poor. I care if you are kind. The irony of all this toxic Filipino culture is that every Filipino I know is very religious. They go to church every Sunday and they pray yet their hearts are filled with evil. I am proud of these young kids speaking out and recognizing what is toxic and I hope and pray that they have the strength to not let it drag them down.
