My late wife and I have been on this trip so many times I can't remember anymore. Used to live in Hermosa near the tracks,raised our family there, was the best place back then. Too expensive and crowded now but still love that train! Thanks to Charlie Bradshaw and then the Harper family for preserving and improving this piece of our history.

One place I have filmed and took many pics on foot is walking the tracks from the Rockwood station out to what I call the "Rockwood cut". As you exit the cut suddenly the vistas of the mouintains and the Animas river far below on the "highline" section comes into view. It is an awesome place to just sit off to the side of the tracks and take vids and pics!

The best part of the whole video was how happy you guys look riding on the train! 😆

mom and i did this route many, many years ago as a part of a bus guided tour of the south west. we got our own car and it was a thrilling ride riding along the canyon wall. we were to ride the train in walker az , but it was too hot. im still amaiZed that this line was done with picks . shovels and ddddynamite . thanks for bringing back memories .:):):):)

Went to my first train show in 3 or 4 years. There was a good size crowd. Got to see lots of things. I am much to picky about what I want to buy. Need to start building and modifying stuff. Ended the day by sitting and listening to a talk on layout design. This guy had an O-N3 layout. Though very good thoughts about the shows you have done that introduced me to the great model railroaders you know. It was nostalgic. Durango is one of those things on my bucket list to do. My son and I have talked about it but it would mean staying in Durango for several days (which is not a bad thing) (just requires planning). My son lives North of Denver in Loveland (you know where Intermountain is built). But I babble on. One Christmas time we rode the Georgetown Loop. Such a neat place especially at Christmas. Waiting for Tuesday! Never boring always unique and interesting.

Not sure if you guys happened to see 480 running when you were out there, but this last year it got a new whistle and it sounds absolutely incredible. I'll be uploading some videos I got while I was there as they left Durango to head up the hill

The real experence to me is going all the way to Silverton, It is such a beautiful little town, the only problem with it is it to me is I don't live there . I didn't know that you could only go one half of the way if you wanted to. The 2 times I took the train was back in the early 1990s when the trains were still billowing coal smoke and ash LOL , the second half of the ride is just as beautiful and when toy get into the valley where Silverton is you can not believe the beautof that small town.......

Dale and Karyn: As I recall, when you did your story about the Wayne Gasolene Service Station Pumps, I had commented and explained, that where I reside, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, had been the original headquarters for the corporate and manufacturing operations of Wayne Pumps. Wayne Pumps was named after the revolutionary war General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne, in George Washington's Continental Army. He, being General Wayne, after the war, was assigned to the territory of what is now, Northwestern Ohio, snd Northeastern Indiana, and had many garrison facilities across this region. In Ohio, there was Fort Recovery and Fort Defiance. In Indiana, there is Fort Wayne, for which the city was named. The indigenous peoples of this vicinity had a title for settlement as well. The Miami tribe called it Kekionga (meaning "blackberry bush"), also known as Kiskakon or Pacan's Village, and it was the capital of the Miami tribe. The Potawatomi tribe had encampment villages in the area as well. Why was General Wayne called Mad Anthony? He would attack the tribes during the overnight hours, and the native peoples would never skirmish after darkness had set in. Some folks wonder why the train goes so slow over the highline. Under power the locomotives pound the ground very hard. Throttling down and slowing greatly reduces that pounding effect on the narrow parts of the highline.

I remember visiting Durango back in the mid 70s. The trains were fascinating but we missed the last round trip train of the day. We didn't stay in Durango so we missed out. It's on my bucket list.

What is nice is that between the Durango and Silverton and The Chama and Toltec, nearly every Reo Grand 3 foot gauge steam still exists, that was running at the end of regular operation. They run, are under restoration, or still exist in some sort of "hulk" status. Yes, a few are gone or are owned by others. Just imagine every one of the C16's and the Mikes all brought back to life. That would be neat. Great video, great camera angles, all done well, including great narration. '-)

Awesome sound of steam and wheels clack, clack, clacking on the rail in music to my ears. My wife and I made our last trip there to ride the train was about two years before covid hit. We have here some of the most beautiful scenery here in Colorado. People don't know what they are missing if they have never been here. Just think how amazing and dangerous it was to build a railroad through the mountains back then. Lot of history out there to see and ride. At least the steam engines will still run with the switch over to oil instead of coal. I am afraid diesel is not the same as a magnificent steam locomotives with all the drivers and pistons moving with the steam and coal smoke flowing through the air. Steam engines where a work of art. Thank you for your narrow gauge and modelling videos - they are ace and have kept me sane through the Covid lockdown. However... they should come with a government health (wealth) warning! One of my most favourite parts of the world. I've visited the D&S in 1998 and 2006 with family, and in 2016 with a couple of mates (We stayed in the Strater Hotel this time). I think I'd quite happily move to live in Durango: a lovely town with cool bars, live music, great restaurants, the railroad. There's even a brewery for me to work in, (that's what I do as a job). Beautiful video.

I have taken the trip to Silverton 2 times and it was so beautiful. It is such a worthy experince that everybody that loves trains or just the pure beauty of the Rocky Mountains should take the trip. Wonderful scenery, nice steam sights and sounds! Definitely on my “before I die” list. BTW, my wife and I had a cab ride in one of those diesels about 25 years ago when they were still run by the Y&WP…lovely engineer by the name of Jeff Ruff did the honours that day, an unforgettable experience. I worked on Princess cruise ships, we were in Skagway frequently.

At 21:30 you can hear the locomotive discharging the steam while crossing the little bridge on the Animas river, making rainbows 🌈 on the left side.

I've waited all week for this episode. I love western Colorado. My birthplace and my home were northwest Colorado. I've been all over that state, everywhere except southwest Colorado. Although I've been through the Black canyon and the Gunnison, the furthest south I've been is Salida to Montrose to Grand Junction, and parts of Colorado national monument. Durango and Silverton are two of the many places that I need to visit before I'm too old to travel. Blackbear pass is another destination of choice that I'd like to do sometime. At the 7:30 mark, McDonald's has to be built up and running by now. I love how there are people who are working, out for a walk, or just standing alongside the railway watching the train as it passes by. I'm sure that if I were there I would be watching it roll by too. Are you following along beside the Animas River? Sharon lake looks beautiful from that viewpoint. (Yes, I'm following along using my map, it createsa more real experience for me). That's a beautiful area! By the looks of the lower water level, the trees and the grasses, (and the minimal use of face masks) you were up there around maybe August or September of 2021? I wonder how many cell phones and cameras that have been dropped while out on the train? Those lodgepole pines, silver pines, and Ponderosa are very tall up along that route. I can only imagine how the workers had cut their way through the mountains blasting rock and building bridges, building a railway in the west in the 1800's was no easy task, even with today's equipment. Speaking of which, we're going to get our very own railway soon, it's called the Uinta Basin Railway. It'll start at around Helper Price area and go up either Indian canyon or Wells dram and end outside of Myton up on Myton bench. We here in the Uintah basin are looking forward to this development. uintabasinrailway.com/ That looked to be an incredible ride. I'll have to take that trip sometime. I'm always in awe at nature when I'm out exploring. It must have taken me an hour to watch this episode because of the video pause and map research. 😅 As always, another great video! I wonder what the old railroad section between Durango and Chama is like? The line may be gone, but the towns that it served are still there, and I think the 160 and 84 highways follow the route of the old line pretty close. One of the towns the line served is a resort town called Pagosa Springs that is still going strong, albeit with road traffic instead of rail. It would be nice to travel to these places and imagine what it must have been like to go from Durango to Chama and stop off for a night or two at a mountain spring resort by train. Ever thought of making a video about that sort of road trip following an abandoned railway line like you did with the Rio Grande Southern?

Fuel oil in my area is red offroad diesel. So diesel burning steam locomotives.

It's to bad that Railroad don't have another train come along behind it with several water tanks that sprays the whole area down to stop and possibilities of a fire. The could hook all the tankers together with the last one with a sprayer. Like those tank trucks the mining camps use to spray down the roads to keep the dust down.

What about the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia? It is supposed to be a beautiful trip during warm weather.

Do you think you’ll visit the EBTRR when it’s finished? It’s a really neat railroad.
