Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

3 жыл бұрын

Struggling to break into the US market in the 1960s, Toyota knew they needed a car that would make people sit up and take notice. And boy did this collaboration with Yamaha do just that! The Toyota 2000GT, arguably Japan's first supercar, was good enough to rival the top European manufacturers, and even joined the pantheon of icons as a Bond Car in "You Only Live Twice". This combination of performance and charm explains why it's so sought after, with good examples fetching up to $1.2 Million. Iain delves further into the history of how the car came to be before introducing some of it's lovely touches. It's then time to take it for a run, assuming he can actually get in it...
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.

We hope you enjoy this latest episode. Those of keen hearing may pick up on the odd misfire during the road test, this has been added to the job list to tackle before she's returned to her owners. We aimed for a weather window to avoid the car getting wet but the great British weather had other ideas, luckily it was a passing shower and she was none the worse for it.

My father (not particularly a car fan) treated me to a visit to the Ulster Motor Show at the end of the 60s/start of the 70s and the only car I can remember was a white 2000GT. Looking back, I can understand why he never took me to another car show, because I must have spent more than an hour just walking around it in total admiration. I've since seen 3 others (including this one), and they remain very high on my "lottery win" list.

What a gorgeous car. I've been in love with them since they appeared in Bond as a drop head car. I owned a ST185 GT4 a few years ago. The engine on that was all stamped up Yamaha. Final blurb I promise. Modern rubber. It's driving me nuts how fast it disintegrates. I'm converting my Rover P6 3500 to solid race fuel lines but it doesn't end there. Recently my 3 year old servo started leaking. The quality of many after market rubber products has taken a big spiral down to the ground. It's very concerning. It's not great if you cannot start a car but it's even worse if you cannot stop one! Nice video thank you.

1965 was a terrific year for small, GT cars. This was such a groundbreaking effort for Toyota, a grand slam right out of the box. Meanwhile, another "dowdy" car company, Opel, was making their own statement on a 2 seat sports GT for the masses, the prototype 1965 Opel Experimental GT, which shares alot of design cues from this 2000 GT; although from everything I've read of the Opel Experimental GT design as well as the production GT design, that the Toyota design had no influence on the Opel lead designer, Erhard Schnell. For that matter, the 65 Mako Shark (which morphed into the producton 1968 Corvette Stingray, had no bearing on the Opel GT. Amazing how two different cultures could come up with a similar 2 seat GT! But for the Toyota, what a difference having Yamaha was in making this a true competitor to the XK-E! Thank you, Iain, for sharing this all-time great with us!

There was a Sinclair gas station in the center of Needham Massachusetts that started selling Toyotas in the 60's. They had a white one of these out front for a while. I've been intrigued by them ever since.

Fascinating. In Thailand you still see old Datsuns on the road from the late 1960s.They are usually somewhat battered. Mainly in the north east.

Great video, as usual. I had no idea how tiny the car was until I saw you getting in and driving it. You are a very good sport to show your struggle to get in the car and it corresponds with your story about Sean Connery and chopping off the top of the film cars. i absolutely love your videos and your automotive knowledge is amazing.

Love your videos Iain, your calm and cheery manner, and your sheer enthusiasm. Very magnetic. And that Toyota has to be one of the most good looking cars to have ever left Japan. Would love to have one, but I know good ones are now priced at sea like so many other classics

Glorious sound. Even at such low revs. Not sure if it is induction noise. It was certainly the car that launched Toyota, and sold millions of Corollas 😀

If I recall Yamaha was engaged by Toyota to tune the Lexus LFA engine. I believe that Yamaha was moderately successful in that endeavor. =) I digress. Iain's ingress into the vehicle made me burst out laughing. Not staged and the fact that it was left in the video is a beautiful thing. It was almost Basil Faulty'esk. "Well, there we are then." LOL! The beauty of the dry British humor!! Classic. Amazing beauty of a vehicle. Wonderful video.
