Today we're adjusting the idle mixture on a Toyota land Cruiser with a 2F and a clone of the Aisan Carburetor. We're using the lean drop method to set idle mixture as well as idle speed.

Thank you for posting this tutorial. Much easier to see how to do it rather than rely on the illustrations from the FSM. How exactly do you tie in the Tach to the 1# spark plug?

I've got an inductive pick up that goes with the fluke meter. Some timing lights have a tach on them and make for a simple way to do it as well.

Next time I have to rebuild a carb I'll film it. We don't do them all that often. I've got the Toyota carb adjustment tool set so it's really easy to set the float. Without it, eyeballing the measurement and then trial and error seems to be the easiest way.

Yes, if the carb is way out you may need to readjust timing more than once.

Hi, great vid. But i have a question my cruiser is hard to start (must use a little bit of gas, sometimes a lot of gas) without the filter on, or the hose that connect from the flter to valve cover is leaking. Should i adjust the carb with filter on or without, thanks before.

The manual shows doing the adjustments with the air cleaner installed. It's a lot easier to do with the cleaner out of the way. I've never seen a big difference in air fuel ratios either way. If you adjust with the air cleaner off you need to make sure any of the vacuum lines you've unhooked are plugged. It sounds like you've got an open line creating a vacuum leak when you've got the air cleaner off.

Hey just stumbled onto your channel and it happened to be this one. I have an 85 Land cruiser, and enjoyed this vid. A question for ya, I see some remove the air pump and plug the injector ports, called “De-Smogging” what’s your thoughts Thanks

It's becoming pretty common to remove the air pump since they're getting old enough to fail and replacements are hard to come by. I leave the rest of the emissions stuff intact though. Depending on where you live it may not pass visual inspection without the air pump, so check before you pull it.

any experience using the harbor freight centach automotive meter? I can't seem to get an accurate rpm reading. Also, you mentioned the idle mixture screw was 1.5 turns out but what is the starting set point for the idle speed and fast idle screws? I haven't found it in my manual. WISH you were closer to Virginia Beach

I've never seen a starting setting for the two idle screws. I start with them backed all the way out. And adjust idle til it's stable enough to do the mixture screw. Then go back and do fast. I've never tried a harbor freight meter.

In my case, I've adjusted the idle mixture screw and vacuum is still going up (to normal range according to my gauge labels), but to a point where my idle speed screw is all the way loosen that it's not touching the throttle anymore. When I adjust the mixture screw the vacuum still goes up but I went ahead and stick to my recommended idle speed of 800 RPM for economy. Is normal for an idle speed screw to become useless at some point like mine?

It sounds like there may be something wrong in the order you're adjusting. I've never had that happen.

My idle speed screw isnt even touching the tab it is supposed to push against to adjust. Any idea why that may be? I havent gone adjusting the mixture yet, but I think something is amiss. 1985 FJ60.

Are you sure you're looking at the idle speed screw and not the high idle/choke speed screw? The idle speed screw is a bit lower and closer to the fender side of things.

I used this carb on my 1984 Nissan Safari with the P40 engine, any idea why when I full throttle the engine nearly stalls and accelerates too slow?

We don't work on Nissans so no idea. I would guess it's because you put a Toyota carb on a Nissan.

Q I can not pass emission on my FJ60 , running rich is that the screw in the back to mess with it?

The adjustment screw is just for the idle mixture. I think it affects the driving mixture some but I'm not sure how much. You main adjustment for running mixture is in the jet sizes.

The mixture screw on the fj60 is really hard to reach. At least on mine. I adjusted the idle speed down but without any gauges, just by the dashboard tach. It's okay but hard to start where I live it's now in the teens or sub zero at night.

Not really. It's just setting the idle mixture.

It's really easy just after tuning since the engine is warm. Still good once it's cooled overnight. A couple taps on the pedal and it starts right up. No choke needed unless it's freezing out.

Where do you have the vacuum guage connected to?

I usually use the vacuum hose to the he brake booster

There isn't really vacuum in the carb. It's only in the intake. The restriction of the throttle plates at the bottom of the carb is what creates the vacuum.

There's a reference port in the carb for that but it's specific to the advance. It's not a constant source like the intake.

Does the rule of getting the RPM back down to 690 every time apply to all engines or just the Toyota 2F? I Have a toyota 4K that I'm going to try this method on. Thanks

I'm not sure for all of the 2f's. That's what it shows in the factory manuals I have for the 2F. It may be different for non US though. The newest manual I've got is late 70's but it seems to work well on the 80's models as well when I've double checked them with an air fuel meter.

Choke fully open. Engine at operating temp and timing adjusted.

hey mate both my idle mixture and idle speed screw have no effect on rpm. the only way i could lower rpm was retarding timing. any tips? thank you

That sounds like you've got other issues beyond just needing an adjustment. Make sure none of the other adjustments or linkages are holding the throttle blades open at idle.
