This series was a grand slam! I suspect my 02 Tacoma is going to need a new engine sooner rather than later due to a lot of deferred maintenance by the previous owners and was hoping you would come out with a engine swap vid! There's TONS of great info and camera angles in here that I just couldn't find in any forum posts or even in my service manuals. Big thank to you guys for tackling this big project AND documenting it!

Well, sometimes wishes come true. We knew this was an important job to document so it was a no brainer to put in the time commitment to make it happen. There's no doubt people will be referencing this video series for information they couldn't find elsewhere in regards to the 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE engine. If somebody needs to replace their 3.4 liter motor, they will now have a good tutorial to follow to make it happen. Thanks for the kind words. We really appreciate it! Happy Wrenching!

When we made this video series, we knew without a doubt that it would help out lots of people, and not just people performing an engine swap. Because we show the complete tear-down and complete build-up of the engine, it would be helpful for anyone looking for clues how things come off the engine and go back on. Thanks for the comment.

Just finished swapping my 3.4 motor in my 1999 4 runner. I found these videos extremely helpful and highly recommend watching before you do any work on your Toyota. I replaced my motor with a used 3.4 out of a wrecked 99 4 runner with 156k for $600 (I rolled the dice on buying a motor like that for $$$ reasons and would recommend spending more $$ on a refurbished or JDM motor if you the $$$) I replaced rear main seal, timing belt water pump, radiator and some other smaller parts. Steering rack and Tye rods and sway bar brackets bushings all with the help Timmy the tool man’s videos. At a coast $1,800. Couple recommendations. Be careful tightening the bolts the will break off or strip out! I went to my local Toyota dealer they print out the torque spec for me. Thanks again Timmy the tool man for you help!

Great series! I will be referencing this for sure when it comes time to swap out my engine in my 96 4runner. It's got 237K right now and looks like there's a lot of gunk built up under the oil cap. Hopefully it runs a lot longer but if worse comes to worst I'll be swapping the old engine out as I can't imagine giving up on this truck. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

Hi Timmy, I just wanted to thank you for making this video series. I discovered that the 4th cylinder on my old engine had been bored out when it started misfiring on 3/6 of the cylinders 2.5 weeks ago. I just finished swapping in a new engine today that has 128k miles on it and it started right up. I'm going into my senior year of high school and it would have been way too expensive for me to have a shop do the work for me. Thanks again and please keep making videos. p.s. if you ever made any merch I would definitely get some

Job well done, Timmy. So much easier to take things off and put back on with the motor on the stand. I just finished swapping out 2 rebuilt heads on my 2002 4Runner, did a complete timing belt and new radiator it was not an easy job. Exhaust manifold and cross over pipe was a bear to figure out to make it all work. I don't know you do it, filming while you are working on these trucks are not fun. I cursed so many times it's not fun.
@TimmyTheToolman

That was a big job you did. We haven't pulled the heads off one of these engines yet but it will happen one day. Filming is a chore for sure and I do get impatient and frustrated. Plenty of swearing goes on at my place, we just don't include it in the video. The language is usually Rated R but we cut it to make it closer to PG 13.

Tim and/or Sean, it is literally insane to me you guys pulled this off. What an amazing feeling of accomplishment you must have had after hearing the startup. I'm just curious for Tim - Did you read through every step of the FSM before attempting this or did you see other forum posts/videos on it before it gave you the confidence that you can 100% pull this off? This is no easy task even for a DIY'er. Or was some of it 'uncharted' territory from your POV and you would 'see' what happens? Obviously I assume it also helps that you have everything on video in case re-assembly gets confusing, you can see what you 'did' to do disassembly etc, but still it's a huge job. I hope my question makes sense, thanks!

Other than the factory service manual, there's a detailed KZfaq series that a guy did around 7 years ago. His channel name is Worse than Chiggers. He really did the type of job we would do documenting a repair. It's really good, and I questioned whether we should document it ourselves. I'm glad we decided to go for it because we are able to show details and share additional information not covered in his series. It's a big job, but nothing is terribly technical. You're just taking parts off in the proper sequence, making sure to stay organized while you're doing it by bagging and labeling fasteners and laying them out in the logical sequence. We did actually watch some of our video footage in reverse when it was time to put the engine back together because we have in the past gotten out of sequence putting parts back on an engine. When this series is complete, people will be able to follow along step by step and do this job no problem provided they have the necessary tools.

You're very welcome Nathan. I would remove the coil packs on the passenger side and turn over the engine via the starter for a while, maybe for 20 seconds. Give the starter a rest for a while and let it cool down and then do it for another 20 seconds. That should get the oil pumping and to the vital parts of the engine.

@@TimmyTheToolman awesome so I got dual electrodes, but how do we check the gap .044, I know on single electrodes we use the coin gauge but on these duals it won’t fit 🤦🏻‍♂️ can’t find a specific vid how to gap dual electrodes or check them
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
@@MM-hc9nr I wouldn't worry about checking the gap. They are set by the manufacturer. I haven't checked a spark plug gap in decades. The spark plugs come with either a hard cardboard sleeve or plastic sleeve slid over the threads to protect the setting of the electrodes. As long as the spark plug had the protective sleeve, the gap should be good.

Lots of people choose to keep the trans in and just remove the engine. We just went with what we know and we know that we can get the trans aligned with the engine with the use of a transmission jack. We were anticipating having a difficult time aligning the engine with the trans with the engine suspended on a hoist. A transmission jack allows you to dial in the alignment which needs to be perfect for the alignment dowels on the back of the engine to line up with the transmission. So, you basically pick your struggle. If you try it the way you want to do it, let us know how it goes.

Tim I may have made a mistake let me know. I replaced my 3.4l in my Tacoma. I picked up a 3.4l that was off a 2wd truck. I switched the oil pans but I forgot to change out the sump and I’m sure the sump is a lot shorter. Is this a problem? Do I need to swap them out if so. What would be easier? Pulling the motor back out or dropping the front diff and all the front suspension components ? I really don’t want to split the motor and the trans again. That was a bitch to put back together. Thank you sir let me know
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan, I would assume it makes a difference so I would advise to change the pick-up tube or sump. I would remove the front differential and then drop the pan. We don't have a video for removing the pan but our trans filter replacement video would give you a very good idea on how to handle it because they're very similar. Remove the pan bolts and then separate the pan from the block with a special tool We link that special pan separation tool in the video description of the trans filer replacement video. Here's a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtt3lN1_zduppIE.html When it comes to dropping the front differential, we struggled in the video to get it out but we learned a better way after the fact to get it out. You disconnect the driver side motor mount and jack up the engine to gain some height. You also loosen the breather and vacuum hard lines on the top of the diff so they don't hook the steering rack lines on the way out and back in. We cover these tips in a pinned comment in that video. A pinned comment is the first comment you will see. Here's a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcWXg8x1286dpmg.html If you have more questions, just ask.

You guys are so fucking bad ass. But man, 4k just for the engine, let alone all the other parts y'all replaced. Shit ton of money dropped into just this engine swap lol. Do you guys have any recommendations for trans/tcase companies?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for fucking bad ass compliment. Yeah, it's a lot of money but it depends on your intended plans for the vehicle and other factors. Rey plans on keeping the rig for a very long time, so the investment into a fully rebuilt engine was worth it to him. There's other routes you can go like a JDM engine or other used engine but you really don't know what you're getting. You might get lucky and get a good used engine, but then again, you might get a hunk of shit that you just spend an enormous amount of time installing in your vehicle. For a trans or transfer case, I'd recommend buying a remanufactured one from Toyota. Other companies rebuild them but probably not as good as Toyota does. We put a Toyota remanufactured trans in Sean's 2002 4runner and we're going to put another Toyota remanned one in an FJ Cruiser this weekend.

Did you have to pull the tranny or can be done without removing
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
You don't have to pull the transmission. But, you have to choose which battle you want. Do you want to battle mating up the engine to the transmission, or do you want to battle mating up the transmission to the engine. When we shot this job, I was of the opinion that it would be easier to align the transmission to the engine. It's debatable which is easier. After doing it both ways now, I think I'd just leave the transmission in. But, to get a taste of what is involved with trying to mate up the engine to the transmission, watch the first part of this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb-VqdJ2nL7bZ6c.html

The engine is running fine William. He recently finished the initial break-in period and he took it onto the freeway for it's first highway speed drive. The Yota1 Performance engine is a stock build. There's no performance enhancements built in. Rey told me the engine is running great but it's not like he's now breaking 1/4 mile track records in his rig. I'm sure the engine feels like any well-running 3.4 liter V6 motor on the road.

Yes, someone helping is ideal especially when it comes to separating the engine from the trans and then getting them re-joined. The rest of the work is basically a one-person job. So, when it comes time to those crucial moments where you need an extra set of hands, get the help. Asking someone to help for those isolated moments wouldn't be a hard sell. Getting someone to be part of the whole job? That would be a tall order unless that person loves turning wrenches and has lots of free time.
