Great video, I have a 21 Jeep Wrangler. Yes I know it's not a Toyota but we all have to start somewhere LOL. I just completed the same maintenance where I did the front and rear axles and transfer case. The dealers starting price is $450 for the maintenance, along with the other checks that they do during that service. I looked at him like he had two heads when he told me the price. My cost for the fluids was $115 with about 90 minutes of my time.

Are the grease fittings for the propeller shafts on Toyota's ( I have a 2017 Tacoma 4x4) universal in size? I bought a grease gun and it's hard to tell if the connector on the gun is too large preventing it from seating or it's the fitting. Any advice is appreciated

With those driveline zerks being so crunchy; do you think it would help to fill them like you did, put a hundred miles on it, and then fill them again to push out the grease to try and get the grit out?
@joeythedime1838
@joeythedime1838 4 ай бұрын
Tip 1: If you do happen to over grease the slip yokes (wink, wink), just remove a zerk fitting and drive around for a bit. The excess grease will be forced out of the hole were the zerk fitting was, then just reinstall the zerk fitting and hit the area with brake clean. Tip 2: Gold Plug and Dimple make a high quality magnetic plug that replaces the transfer cases stock non-magnetic plug. Tip 3: You can upgrade your brake fluid to a DOT 5.1. This will help if your doing heavy towing as DOT 5.1 is glycol-base, compared to DOT 5 being silicon based, and is compatible with DOT 3, but has a much higher boiling point: 500 degrees dry and 356 degrees wet.

Are the rear diff washers a different size from the front fill washer? Your video lists the front fill as: 12157-10010 and the rear as: 125157-10010. The video description shows these the same but I wanted to confirm. I’m unable to find 125157-10010 which suggests it was a typo. Great video and thanks for putting these out!

Toyota gear oil is EXPENSIVE. I will challenge you though, a quality 75W90 GL-5 gear oil (Mobil 1, Delo, Valvoline, etc.) will not damage your diff. In fact, many dealerships don't use Toyota gear oil for a drain and fill service on the diff or transfer case. As a note, some hardcore off roaders recommend that you use dino / conventional oil and just change more often. East Coast Gear supply, a diff manufacturer recommends dino oil.
@JasonExplainsThings
@JasonExplainsThings 4 ай бұрын
I'm sure it's fine. I know that's what Nitro Gear uses as well. They used 75W90 GL5 synthetic on everything. I'm just going to match the owners manual since everything is stock and it costs almost the same. 75W90 is much easier to get locally.

Yeah, I've used 75/90 in mine when I did the diffs. I actually put it in the t-case too. That was about 70k miles ago, so I'm gearing up to do this again soon. I am going to use the correct Red line in the tcase this time though, when I originally did this I just bought the gear oil locally and did not realize the difference.

Hey Jason! Thanks for putting this video together. It was so helpful! Quick question re oil fill levels for the rear differential. I drive a 2018 4Runner SR5 (same vehicle as your dad). I noticed that the rear diff held more oil than the manual indicates before it began to drip from the fill plug. Mine took roughly 3.25 qts as opposed to the 2.9 qts indicated in the manual. I confirmed vehicle was 100% level prior to performing the service. Did you notice the same thing? Should I be concerned I've overfilled the rear diff?
@JasonExplainsThings

So the SR5 does take more than others because it doesn’t have a rear locker. I’m guessing you’re probably fine.

Off topic question but I’ve been having a problem that i thought you might be able to help me with. I’m running a small fridge off an eco flow river. When i plug the river into the truck (22 Colorado zr2)12V it kills the battery and causes power steering issues. I replaced the original battery [only 15k miles)but the 2nd one did the same thing. Any thoughts? I always thought you could charge the power station from the battery while driving. Any help is appreciated.

@JasonExplainsThings
@JasonExplainsThings 4 ай бұрын
Yeah I know people disagree on that topic. As a diy (not pro) mechanic I was told it’s good to expel a small amount of old grease and grime to keep the seals fresh and clean them… but not overdo it because that blows out the seals like you said.

How much should you pump?
@LOLZZ184
@LOLZZ184 4 ай бұрын
@jimmyj5038 As silly as it sounds, by feel. When you connect the grease fitting, you feel it "latch" then as you go to pump the handle. You feel it pump easily. You know when you're done when you feel resistant on the handle while pumping. Pumps vary depending on the needs of the vehicle.

You stated in the beginning that you purchased a PDF of the service manual (I have been trying to find a Haynes-type manual for the 5th gen but cannot find one). Can you drop a link where you got the PDF? Great video!

My Toyota dealership has a stroke when you change your own cabin air filter. They tried to fear monger my mother about it and I had to head over and put them in their place. Don't mess with mom.

Can I use super lube nlgl #2 multipurpose synthetic grease with ptfe?
@JasonExplainsThings

IDK! 😂 See what I did there? The manual says NLGI #2… if there’s a fancy flavor beyond that you’ve surpassed my grease formula knowledge.

@7:10 You mentioned that you were slightly at fault for the dealer not doing the lubrication job. How can one make sure the dealer or any shop did it?
@JasonExplainsThings
@JasonExplainsThings 3 ай бұрын
As far as I know the only way to tell is a visual inspection (does the shaft look super dry) and you can also tell when putting new grease in. If you pump a lot into the u-joints and you hear a bunch of dirt and air leave the joint then it was likely not lubricated for a long time… like mine was.

on my tune up they’re suggesting Premium Universal Coolant Conditioner* but I never heard about that, do you know something about it?
@JasonExplainsThings
@JasonExplainsThings 2 ай бұрын
Sounds like bs honestly. The service schedule calls for new coolant at 100k miles or when the vehicle is 10 years old.

question for you, i have been looking into this a bit since yesterday when i realized i am due for this work. the car care nut has a video about transfer case fluid. he stated you are ok to use GL5 multiweight in both the transfer case and the difs. out of curiosity any reason you didnt go that route?

I followed the owners manual. It’s pretty specific about what’s required.

Just on my oil change done by my local dealership. The person must have used a impact gun on my oil fiter . And the drain on the filter . I had to use the breaker bar to remove the oil filter plaster housing. Of course they denied it. .

Due to my job and the limited time I was home. I used a local oil change business for the oil changes. When I switched jobs I started doing my own oil changes again. They had barely tighten the filter. I could literally twist it with my finger tips. They were just making it easier for themselves. They used a larger universal fit oil plug gasket and when looking at the indentations on it. That gasket was last a millimeter away from leaking.

I am curious. What would the stick shock be from an honest dealer that would do all of these services? I am currently 23k miles and am curious what "inflation rates" a dealer would charge.

That was originally part of the video. My local dealership was great to buy a vehicle from… but the service department is another story. I’ve seen them over torque stuff… they installed the skid plate with the spacers in the wrong spot. They tried to rip my mom off when she needed work on her RAV4 (overcharging for parts and overquoting the book hours). Really frustrating and disappointing.

Oh… and they tried to tell my friend he needed $900 of work on his Prius when his dash display wasn’t working. I Googled the issue and found a reset procedure and we fixed the issue in 5 minutes for free at my house.

@@JasonExplainsThings yikes. That sounds like quite a no-go then when I think based on this video (which is great by the way) I can pretty much do all of this myself. That's a bummer that the lock 'n lube grease gun didn't work for that one grease fitting. Do you know if they make any adapters? It's a really nice product, but don't want to spend the money for it if it's not going to work for all the fittings.

It might’ve been how I lifted the rear from the axle. I’m wondering if it was on the ground (rear suspension not compressed) if it would have fit. Honestly not sure.
