Installation video(step by step):
• Toyota 4Runner Vs Peda...
Real life testing video on the Pedal Commander performance.
This video is not sponsored or paid by Pedal Commander company.
I bought it with my own money with the intent of getting to the bottom of it.
Will be tested honestly and on my own terms, with my own knowledge of this vehicle.
I have owned this vehicle for 5 years and know it very well, so if an improvement is made I will notice it.
If you have been using the pedal Commander would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you for watching and I appreciate all the support!
* beware that there are other similar products on the market and that these are my findings after 1 month of use only.
( I do not have the funds or means for research and development that a big corporation like Toyota does. Use at your own risk)

Wooohooo .. sweet !! Your findings are basically same as mine ( but I never even tried eco ! wow sounded terrible! ..and btw i didnt bother with sport plus either. ) .. and that drive-ability is helped and it's enjoyed right around city +3 . I value your findings being a Toyota tech even more than my own because you looked at techstream data that i could not look at, nor understand... I have set mine personal preference on city+2 right now, parking spaces are easier with it slightly less touchy. Great video and INSIGHT here for folks that are on the fence !

Absolutely Sir, I do try. The best way to explain how eco mode looked like in the graph (has in voltage signal to the PCM) 2 Mississippis with the pedal floored equal 84% response. Normal voltage signal = 1 Mississippi, floored and 100% voltage signal to PCM. That eco mode is Dangerous, hence why it gives you a disclaimer every time 🥶 ( I had it in sport + for like 10 miles 🤣🤣 couldn’t stand it, to jumpy) Your continuous support is much appreciated!

I'll keep watching for further developments. I live in a small coastal community, and have a very low mile 2016 Trail. I'm lucky to get 13mpg. Perhaps that is because of the BF Goodrich KO2 tires, that I installed new, because I'm unable to shovel snow anymore. Love this channel! I'll keep listening. Thanks for all of your videos!

Great video! I have a 2021 4Runner, and I knew going in that it would not be a sports car, but I have to say that a Throttle adjuster will change the way the car feels. I personally went with the Banks Pedal Monster, not getting into a debate but same principle of the Pedal commander. In summary, if you are disappointed or slightly on the verge or trading in your 4Runner. Give a product like this a try. It will change your mind for sure. Keep up the great work!

I've been debating getting one of these for my 4runner. I already have one of these for my mustang and though I've never run the numbers on the economy, there is a noticeable difference in acceleration. It is definitely not a gimmick. The 4 runner definitely would benefit from an acceleration boost especially when towing the boat.

I believe that manufacturers set vehicle settings to what they do to meet EPA requirements and to get the best gas mileage possible. Sure, you can choose to leave vehicles as they were meant to be left from the factory. Personally, I like to modify my vehicles and for the most part it works out fine and sometimes the modifications don't. To each their own, but personally I like my Pedal Commander on my 6.2l Escalade. Makes such a difference on that big ol' pig lol

Set it and leave it alone other then I did just yesterday try City +4 but moved it back to +2. City +2 is where I find it the best. I haven’t and don’t need to even try Eco or either of the sport modes. I didn’t buy it for fuel milage or more power/acceleration Drivability is the key it just gives you more confidence behind the wheel is what I found. As far as the price, there are a number of devices that do the same thing. Pedal commander has become the most famous, however there are many others that are less expensive. I run one called the "Hike-it" throttle controller and I'm quite happy with it. I purchased it on Black Friday for $119.99, and have been running it since January with no issues. Like Viking said, I found a setting that I like, and I left it alone. No check engine lights or any other issues, and I've been averaging about 20mpg. One nice thing about the one that I have is that it has an "auto" mode, which will self adjust sensitivity based on how aggressive you hit the pedal.

I have a question about mileage. I just bought a 2015 4Runner about 6 weeks ago. I have consistently gotten 13-14 mpg with normal city driving only getting around 300 miles per tank. We took 1 trip on the interstate in it and avg 17 mpg. I noticed on your videos you are in the 19+ range and close to 400 miles per tank. Most documentation shows mpg should be 17 city, 18 combined and 20 highway. I understand there will be some variation depending upon driving conditions, geography etc etc and I did not buy a 4Runner for high mpg but your 4Runner is almost 50% better mpg than mine. Any thoughts? On a side note I did install a Pedal Commander myself this weekend, not so much for mpg improvement, but I will say it is certainly a great upgrade and would recommend it as well.

It’s a cool add on. When I got my 21 in April of 21, it was a learning curve for me on brake pedal being very sensitive and gas pedal being not as responsive which I chocked up to going from a Subaru to a body on frame truck. (It felt like driving my 85 LeSabre TBH.) The biggest thing to get used to for me was the brake “drift back” on steep hills. Now I just really step on the brake on those bad hills to avoid the drift.

Hey Viking, I usually love your videos, however, I think you are not really using the Pedal Commander to it's full potential. The Eco mode doesnt get you much better mpg, true! But it is far superior when off-roading or in inclement weather. It prevents slippage and is really great for crawling. Further, I find the city and sport actually increase mpg on the highway. It gets me to speed quicker and allows me to upshift into 5th sooner. Thanks!

12:43 I was always curious why they didn't include the TRD cold air intake on the TRD PRO. They included the aftermarket TRD exhaust, but not the TRD intake. More air going out via the exhaust, but the same amount of air coming in? Maybe the engineers are capped financially with add ons. But science says increase both, and then add a bit more fuel.

What's your experience? have you heard of this? maybe worth making a video on.

@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 2 жыл бұрын
If you're driving in the 35 to 40 mph range and the shifting back and forth is annoying you, just pop the gear lever over to the left into to sequential (S) mode. It will drop it into fourth gear and it will not allow the 5th gear up shift. That'll probably solve your problem and make it much more tolerable to drive.
@dbarton8651
@dbarton8651 2 жыл бұрын
@@trailrunnah8886 For sure that's what I've been doing for 5 years. To be fair it's only really bad when the AC is on. Also, doesn't matter whether I'm gentle or aggressive on the throttle. when it does it's downshift it's pretty rough/aggressive...almost clunky. I may be overthink in it and I'm sure it's a characteristic of the transmission. I do believe it is very well built. My '98 went to 330K before I sold it to a buddy and still running at 375. Different rig but I do have the utmost faith in the T4R engineering
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 2 жыл бұрын
@@dbarton8651 I noticed the same thing with the downshifts. It's like the transmission doesn't want to downshift, and then when it does it's super dramatic about it. There's a certain hill on the highway near me, it's a 50 mph speed limit. I need to give it enough gas to get it to downshift to third to maintain speed going up that hill. The first downshift is just more noise, then the second down shift actually gets some acceleration going. I think there are two issues causing this:. 1) the transmission is programmed to keep the engine at the lowest possible RPM in order to maximize fuel economy. 2) in direct conflict with 1 is that the engine is tuned to make most of its horsepower and torque at high RPM. Both the HP and torque peaks of this motor are over 4000 RPM. Because of that, when you're cruising at 1,500 RPM at the 40 mph range, the engine is way out of its power band and does not have enough power to maintain speed on any type of grade without downshifting to get more RPM. My other car is a Volvo with a turbocharged 2.5 L 5 cylinder. It makes less peak HP/tq than the 4Runner, however it is tuned to make it at low RPM. It makes peak torque at 1800 RPM, which is where the engine spends most of its time just cruising. So the same hill that I need to downshift two gears to make in the 4Runner, I can accelerate up in top gear with the Volvo. I just set the cruise, and it pretty much never downshifts down out of 5th gear unless I'm in the mountains. Meanwhile, the 4Runner will downshift if there's a headwind. Not that I'd buy one, because I know it will be prohibitively expensive, but I hope the next generation has some sort of a turbo engine matched with the hybrid drivetrain, like the new Tundra. I think that will be both more economical, and a much better driving experience. And I think by now Toyota has hybrid technology nailed, so I would not worry about the reliability. Btw, my 2013 has been super reliable. I bought it 3.5 years ago with 80,000 mi on it, I'm at 140,000 now, and other than routine maintenance the only issue I've had with it is that I had to have the AC recharged at around 105K.

These things do not claim that they will increase power or gas mileage. I have a Sprint Booster which does the same thing. The pedal response is amazingly better. The lag between stepping on the pedal and the throttle responding is so much better than stock. They do what they claim to do. Yeah Eco mode is not to be used, I don't know why it's even there.

It's not your job to drive faster for other drivers. Are they paying YOUR insurance costs & speeding tickets? Every other driver always wants you to go faster, so they can go faster, they sure aren't worried about whether YOU get a ticket or hit somebody. If the speed limit is 55, you're NOT obligated to drive faster. Use Eco mode if you want to.

Just curious as to your thought on this… I have a PC. I started using it (city+2). Then I was reading some of the comments in a group I’m in on FB ( I immediately disconnected and reconnected the originals together) and a few were saying that it can put the 4Runner into limp mode. How and why would this be such an effect from the PC? I really want to use my PC. I paid $$$ for it, but this scared me and I don’t want to cause problems with my 4R, it’s not even a year old (2021 TRD ORP)

I ended up removing it, after experiencing unwanted acceleration with my family in the truck. It was to say the least, a bit petrifying . I know my truck well, I’ve never had an issue like that before or since.

No Sir, let’s not get too much acceleration and unwanted acceleration mixed up. My 4runner without me touching the gas pedal accelerated on its on full throttle for almost 3 seconds straight . It happened twice.

I like my pedal commander EXCEPT that from a slow roll, the pedal is way too sensitive. From a slow roll, a normal soft press of the throttle results in a huge lurch. I think I am on City +2.

I personally ended up removing it for that and many other reasons.

Well, is eating your own words better served up cold? Ok, not so much it doesn't work, but what it does when it does fail. Runaway throttle, or get put into limp mode. Robbing power to run this, that is suppose to be for your gas pedal guess was a stupid idea. This was going to be my go to mod for the throttle response issues that we face but thanks to your other Video, Banks Throttle monster looks to be an over all better and safer option. Thanks for putting the other video out before I made that commander purchase.

It's too bad you didn't look at available options, Paul. Having owned both the Pedal Commander and the Sprint Booster V3, I can tell you that the Sprint Booster is a much better unit in terms of performance and design. There are documented issues, some serious, that are caused by the Pedal Commander over time. Do your research first before making recommendations.

Wow, a little harsh there. But I did in fact state : 1- it does what it promises (removes that slight initial delay) 2- there’s not enough good info on long term possible side effects (therefore, probably not smart to run) 3- I gave you guys my opinion based on my findings for 1 month usage 4- I left it in a way for you guys to do your own research and decide if it’s really worth going against millions of dollars of (search and development) through Toyota. But in any case, not to worry I will take 3 times longer to release the video and spend all my spare time which is very little doing research for the video. 👍🏻 Unfortunately I’m Human and I’m not perfect. Noted for next time!
