As per usual I left in my screw ups so you can learn from them or laugh at them, probably both.
I think the process is the same on 2002 through 2006 models though I may be wrong about that. This was my first time doing this. My father had changed it the times before. Took about 45 minutes. Would have been over a hundred to have it done at a shop.

Mr. Cooper, You saved a teacher from paying 400+ dollars for parts, labor and tow! I paid 127.00 for a replacement starter for my Camry and did the rest myself with your help. You are a great teacher and a very valuable member of society for the future. Thank you for documenting this whole process in its entirety, mistakes and all. I really appreciate what you help make possible for the public and of course the money I saved. Thank you

I just wanted to add it's a good idea 💡 on the electrical connectors, when reconnecting to put a dab of dielectric grease on them it helps tremendously, so they don't get corroded so easily and damaged from engine heat. Great Video.

This will work for camrys made from 2002-2006 2.4l engines. I have a 03 and i did it in about the same as the gentleman in the video. Thank you sir for the video. The bolts holding the starter in place are 14mm and the single one holding the cable to it is a 12mm.

Smashing job :-D, you did really well and no free spare parts left over lol :-D Short term memory is a must for unknown repairs but it's not perfect. When i've repaired peoples laptops the amount of cables and plastic bits can be a pain to remember, i've had one screw left over and had to do it all again, oh fun :-D.

Informative at this moment my vehicle (Toyota Camry 2003 4 cyl) is stalled and not cranking was wondering if it was the starter or alternator when I turned the ignition on the dash lights up but no sound and no crank it started two days ago I drove and when I returned home and park I tried restarting but it wouldn't. I'm very curious why someone would dislike this. Probably mechanics who think something like this should be done by a professional. This is minor work tho. So anyone should be capable of doing this. They just think they can't. Or they are scared. Cause there is no reason why a human being shouldn't be able to undo bolts and change a part like this.

Great video! I was wondering if you had to deal with the factory reset issue when you disconnect the battery from a Camry. There's a video about that. Whenever I disconnect my battery from my Camry I have to do a reset. It's the craziest thing, most inconvenient thing ever. Great great job on the video. Now I know to have prepared a 10 mm 12 mm or 14 mm socket with an extension I really appreciate you putting up this video thanks

You sir are a God sent angle. Great video incredible lighting along with easy to follow dialogue. Just what I needed to view to get the nerves to try this myself. I would like to say that it is ironic that I also have a 2003 Camry and this is the 3rd starter I have gone through ( 2 in a month) from O'Reilly Auto Parts. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth for a auto parts store. After I swap this out and hope that i just got a bad batch, I still probably won't buy another major part from them again. :( PS : I'm curious. Did you use a go pro to record this or a head mounted cell phone ?

Can you do it by getting under the car (the old way)? Or it isn´t that far below? I used to do that repair in an Oldsmobile. Honestly perhaps I prefer to go straight for the starter by getting under the car, rather than move several unrelated parts around to uncover it.

I used the YourMechanic service and the guy broke one of the connectors to the PCV valve and cost me $50 extra, he also put the filter backwards and he had bad breath. What a waste of money and time. Never will hire them again and also will do it myself. I have done it myself already.

Did you have to shim yours? Ive replaced mine in the past at least 1x. This time it originally started and not it seems like its not lining up with the flywheel. Now its not starting again. Time to take it back apart. Ive compared the 2 when i purchased the new one and they were identical.

Japanese cars do last a long time. I walk to work (very,very lucky my company moved offices just up the road from my a few years ago) so i still drive a 2002 Honda Civic. It just will not break down, and because we only really use it at the weekends, i just don't want to spend the money (that i don't have!) and buying a new car.

"lifetime warranty, so it didn't cost us anything the 2 times it went out". Correction, it cost your your time x two and the inconvenience when the damn car does not start. O Reilly's parts are made in China, so they break before lifetime kicks in.

@MichaelTheComputerGuy

Its all just parts that go together that make them work. If they stop working you replace a part or sometimes also another related part. When you're doing it it sometimes makes sense to replace something else because it's likely to fail soon or to make them run better.

If your car still won't start after replacing the starter either the starter wasn't the problem, the replacement was faulty or you installed it wrong.
