Back in the 60s-70s I could buy rebuild kits for starters. 90% of the time, it's just the bendex contacts that goes bad. In a pinch for money I just filed down, cleaned the bendex contacts, and it would work just fine. Sometimes, replace the starter motor brushes, and emory cloth the armature. Basically rebuilt the starter just like from the factory.

The tip to clean the throttle body after any disconnect of the battery was VERY helpful. Would never have thought of that "memory" in the ECU that compensates for a dirty throttle body being lost and causing rough/high idle after reconnect. Something so simple that could trigger another round of parts cannon fire.

After being in a shop for 30 years, very few techs will do what you did for broken bolts. They say I didn't cause that, pay me extra and I'll take care of that. Your the only type of tech I let work on my vehicles. Great job, I'll keep watching.

i've met him and we are both on point. i've been a mechanic for almost 40 years and work the same way. everything i've told my son about repairs and shops, when he met ahmed the first time, he told my son the same things. i advise customers and it's their decision to fix stuff or not and repair stuff like missing/broken bolts; i'm anal. in almost 40 years, i've never had a comeback, only repeat customers. i don't have a large customer base nor do heavy work anymore due to injuries but i still work.

One time i got stranded due to a bad starter and the only option I had was an aftermarket starter so I replaced it and kept my original starter (no rust or corrosion damage), disassembled it in my free time and ordered the carbon brushes that was worn out, fixed back up and left in my car trunk. Exactly one year later the aftermarket starter did fail, and I did put back my original starter, working well till today. 2009 camry

I learned all about the ease of replacing one of these toyota starters years ago, this was the the first of two times my camry "almost let me down". We got back from our flight home to Boston late, a few crewmembers missed their bus to a nearby parking lot. I offered to give them a ride... Thank God I never shut the engine off when we got to the empty parking lot so late at night when I dropped them off. The next morning, I went out to the car, it attempted to crank for a second, and would not crank again. After basic checks, concluded the starter was shot. I was thrilled to find it mounted up top like that, had it out in less than a half hour even on that cold winter morning. Took a cab to the dealer, bought the reman Denso unit and had the car running by lunch time. I so appreciate your attention to detail. Details are EVERYTHING to me as well. This got me in trouble years ago when I worked in the boatyard, attending to minor, but important details even though the outboard was in for an unrelated repair. Needless to say, the boss would say things like "who is going to pay for the time you spent.....", "can't charge the customer for that". But, like you say, you have to know when to stop and give the customer a call before getting in too deep for sure. I could usually justify a little extra time to the customer by carefully explaining the extra work done on the workorder. I'm getting ready to replace the radiator on the old Camry, thanks for showing us how to pop up the grille a bit making it easier to get at all the fasteners!! D

I live in rusty land and will use never-seize on all rusty bolts. Any future disassembly will always be easier, never a broken bolt

I had a starter issue with my 1MZFE, I would turn the key and no crank, just a click. After watching countless KZfaq videos my best estimated guess was a starter issue so I bought a "new" one and it solved the problem. Starts right up now.

Watching this diag and repair is why I do my own work when possible. I spend time inspecting, cleaning and repairing the areas I'm touching. I've never had a mechanic take the time to get the job done to my satisfaction. Yes, the repair is done correctly, but a mess or missing fasteners are never replaced or even brought to my attention.

I was able to replace the starter on my previous 1998 Corolla. It was easy access

2 months ago I noticed my father-in-law's car was cranking a little bit slower than I'm used to. So I told him to replace the battery preventively. It cranked a bit better, but still not to my liking. Last saturday the starter gave up. Heard the solenoid clicking, but nothing else. Towed to a starter/alternator specialty shop. The changed the brush holder (complete with brushes in one) and it's good as new now. Yes, we still do this here, since new starters and alternators are a bit above our budget. About 6 months ago a cousin had an issue with batteries in his CRV. Would need a new battery every 6 months. His mechanic could not find what's wrong. So I told him to go to that same specialty shop. They found the fault in the starter, being a worn bearing causing the rotor to rub on the anker, causing a slow drain. Replaced the starter and all is well again. The shop owner told me to never save on batteries, because a worn battery will cause a higher load on the alternator causing abnormal wear.

Love all your video's. One other thing to test is the battery, just because you have 12.4 volts does not mean you have the amperage for the starter to crank. Load test battery, if good, then continue with diagnosing.

Another thing to make sure is that it's not the gearbox. Sometimes a worn gearbox won't fully go into park and for safety reasons most cars won't crank the engine when in gear.

Having a factory service manual has really come in handy over the years.

I remember back in the day when these videos were focused clearly. What happened? Back in the day we also were taught what is the bendix on a starter? Bendix drive - The device allows the pinion gear of the starter motor to engage or disengage the ring gear.

So good to watch and listen to someone who cares about what he does. The "lord knows" that is also so true. I do have one for you though, a video on how to replace the starter on V8 landcruiser where the starter motor sits in the valley and just getting to it, can take some time. Toyota generally recommends removing the gearbox to do it, others pull the guts of the engine out to get to it. Interested to know how you would go about it.

Hi AMD, You haven’t experienced a 1973 Holden HQ (Australian car). No relays. The 12v solenoid power for starter motor runs through the ignition switch. Works when the switch is new but as the switch ages the voltage drops to the solenoid which causes it not to engage. Simple fix to wire in an external 25A type relay on the firewall between the ignition switch and the solenoid 😄

Thanks, AMD, for taking care of those broken bolts! I have exactly the same bolts snapped in the core support that secures the air duct, as well as the core support brace, unfortunately snapped at the lower bolt that goes into the subframe, after our 2009 Venza came back from a mechanic. I might be able to remove the lower grill insert to drill the bottom one out, otherwise I don't know what else to do. For the top side, I'll try the torch method you showed! It's so frustrating to get the car back with snapped bolts and missing clips!! In contrast, it's heart-warming to see you take the time to fix others' mistakes and not let them slide. It's also soothing to hear you emphasize the importance of understanding the root cause of the problem and not just rush to "fix" the issue blindly. Keep up the awesome work, and the great educational videos!

Nice job on the broken and missing bolts. I was surprised when you used heat on those bolts on your nice new counter without protecting the counter with something fire resistant! And then dropping those broken heated bolts on the new counter!

God, I love this guy. I replaced the front 3 plugs on my 08 Sienna, and all coil connection clips. This was a simple starter replacement, then he fixes the front bumper panels, brackets, etc my goodness. This 2008 Sienna will hopefully travel just to take Ahmed to a Cubs or White Sox game, or any team he would like to sit in a box. I have a ton of interior missed clips where the rear door closes when we shove tools, lumber, baseball gear, etc., no engine issues thanks to this channel. Thank You AMD, I am serious for a game where I get 100 level box seats. Each time I watch his videos I say "no way he can top this needed advice", and you do Ahmed. Excellent video. I repaired a starter in the mid-70's. It was a low miles Plymouth reduction gear with a bent low speed shaft. I haven't had a starter issue on any vehicle since then, "knock on wood".

And it's nice to see a mechanic fix those minor things instead of just saying 'I didn't do it, I'm not fixing it ' , overlooking those seemingly minor things is what makes a nice car look trashy. I get it, you aren't being paid to restore the car, but removing these broken bolts and replacing them in the assemblies you mess with has always been something that I have felt was the responsibility of the mechanic as a part of the job. These broken fasteners just keep adding up if no one takes the time to correct them as they go. When I started out as a young mechanic the mentors that I had impressed upon me that if you break a fastener you must repair it, at the same time they taught me how to minimize the chances of breaking them in the first place. One common cause is not understanding the power of your impact. These days with the automotive tech schools employers are expecting an ace mechanic right out of the box, and there's little to no mentoring and guidance. In my day it was common practice for the shop owner or manager to mentor and constantly evaluate the newbies. Nowadays service managers aren't hands on in the bays and usually aren't mechanics.

I was having starter issues a several years ago when driving my gradmas 07 corolla. It would make a grinding sound when ever i turned on the car and over time it got worse.. Luckily at the time I was going to school to be a technician and figured out before it caused damaged to the flywheel

Under the hood is a high corrosion area, if I do the starter, I coat the big and small connector with aluminum/copper wire joint compound and end the corrosion concerns. I also use them in straight butt crimp connectors, have to seal both ends or it will give trouble later. Silicone die electric also work great. My favorite al wire joint compound, Ilsco , a green tinted grease like compound that will turn brown with age. I hate the No-Lox brand available in Home Depot, it is messy and sticks to all your tools and harder to clean off.

So impressed with your level of knowledge and attention to details. I wished I could find an independent mechanic with your level of customer service and skills in my area.

AMD, thank you for another informative video. I wish my starter was so easy to access. '08 GX470 4.7 2uzfe has a very (lets say) protected location for the starter.😂 I'm not complaining original starter was fine when I replaced it, while replacing the secondary air injection system at 240,000 miles.

The crank no start vs no crank no start distinction is something everyone should understand. My dad spent 20 minutes trying to jump start my sisters car in a snowstorm only to give up and call me when the problem was the key fob cracked and so they were trying to start the car without the chip. The same thing happened to my grandma in the same car 5 years prior and neither she nor the aaa driver could figure it out and tried to jump it.

Scannerdanner did a series of videos on this crank no start presentation, which is common enough to build a simple diagnostic checklist. Here's what I do. 1. Multimeter on both poles of battery, crank and see if voltage sags below about 10V. This gets the most common cause, first. 2. Move the ground lead from bat neg to engine frame and repeat. This gets the most common cause of bad ground although it will miss the very rare bad starter ground. 3. High current test light on B+ post to ground should always light, turn start key to see if it dims. If it does not dim, then voltage drop on the B+ wire is practically excluded as the cause for why the solenoid won't close. 4. Test light from S post to ground, turn key to see it turns on. If you can access the S post without disconnecting the connector, you exclude voltage drop in that ignition wire as a cause for why the solenoid won't close.. If you can't, as in this case, then a high current test light is a good substituted load to screen for voltage drop in that wire.

Hi Ahmed, I was out and about yesterday and my 2002 Camry would not start. A jump would not start the car. After waiting an hour for a tow to come, a Good Samaritan came along and tapped on the starter and it immediately started.. I drove it home and I’m going to check the connections today. Never had a problem in two years starting the car.

An interesting video. I did not realise modern car starters were that small. My memory goes back a long way , to the 60s. I would like to think the owner will one day spend time polishing the plastic headlight lenses and thus restoring the power of the lights. I have the impression this car is not washed very often.

The small detour that Amd fixed to get it done right is what set apart a great mechanic from the rest. I'm thankful to have found your shop for my 2013 LX570.

Just make sure you don't do what I did. I got a new starter because I couldn't start the car consistently. Turns out there was a piece of plastic blocking the clutch pedal and the old starter was in perfect condition.

I remember working on an 09 matrix xrs, has over 250k miles, barely brushed the top radiator bleed line and it snapped on me. Close to the upper radiator hose. Mind you it was a friend's car, they wanted to drive to Kansas from California in a few weeks. I went and ordered the part and recommended they order a new radiator, with a shop, so it can be warrantied should they need it. We had to do a repair on the radiator side too with jb weld, held good for a temp repair. Meanwhile I taught them how to bleed their cooling system, cleaned their overflow tank, and got them some new antifreeze mix. 3 months down the line, they get their radiator replaced, they are in the Rockies and I receive a call from them. The shop that installed the radiator gave them a bad cap. It failed on their trip at night. I coached them through what we went through and reminded them how to top of their radiator, they still had to drive with a bad cap so they needed to stop often and top off with water. The car still runs today, this was in 2022. They live near SF and were able to keep from overheating their motor badly for over 300 miles. They got a replacement cap the next day when the parts stores opened up. Previous to that they hardly did anything else other than top of or change their oil. The world works in mysterious ways and I'm glad I was able to help them/ intervene before a disaster hit their car.

My Master Toyota Mechanic, Edwin F. just changed the contacts instead of replacing the starter to save me a lot of money.

When I saw the title & run time I was certain I was about to learn of a source for Toyota starter motor bearings, contacts, and brushes! My 03 Corolla's starter went 189K miles. I had a reputable local shop rebuild it. It failed again 73K miles later. This shop has rebuilt many alternators & starters for me but only this one failed. They said they simply can't get the same quality of internal replacement parts they used to.
