I believe there is one manual in service on Lantau Island. There is also one previous-generation diesel-powered Comfort still in service, license plate GL2649, driven by a man who distrusts the new LPG Comforts so much that he keeps a spare diesel engine in his apartment.

the manuals are things of the past. all you see is drivers with the column going into park for no reason at stop lights. it looks cool though. and they get you where you need to be

@@passengersplace The manual blue taxi on Lantau Island is still running up to now (Nov 2020), with the license plate beginning with DC. Other than that, there are also less than 10 manual red taxis running in the urban area, often with license plates starting with letter J, indicating that the first registration date of these cars are on or before 2001. However, these remaining manual taxis are likely to retire in the coming year (2021) as there are rumours that insurance companies refuse to issue insurance for taxis aged more than 20. For the last diesel taxi GL2649, it is retired and it was heard that the owner have preserved the car in a private car park.

You've also forgot to mention Nissan Cedric as well, Hong Kong still uses the Nissan Cedric Y31 as Taxis as of now, although the older ones are much rarer to find on the road, they had the newer versions of the Nissan Cedric Y31 Taxi introduced back from 2013 with different bumpers and a different taxi top.

I had considered mentioning the Cedrics, thanks for the comment and info. Whilst I was in HK a few months ago I did see a few still running around. Might try to do a video on the Nissan next time I'm there. :)

The diesel taxis before LPG were all manual, I asked a driver why and he told me it better for going up hills and so they could cut in and out of traffic better. Thought it was strange to have manual vehicles in such a busy place but they all changed to automatic once they bought in LPG.

(8:44-9:05) This is why I prefer cars with a standard gasoline, or diesel fuel tank. While I like the idea of propane gas, the propane tank takes up a crazy amount of trunk space that would otherwise be used for luggage.

Interesting vid. You mentioned in Japan a column-shift automatic is available on these. What you didn't mention , at least until 2015 to my knowledge , they were also available in Japan with a column-shift 5-speed manual . (I am currently looking at buying one of those to import to UK - which is how I know about them) .
@flat6gts
@flat6gts 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and having grown up in HK, I used to be so fascinated with how the drivers executed shifts on a column mounted manual. Seemed like it would be much more prone to getting the wrong gear with such a small gear selection plate and a super long and skinny stick jutting out the column!

Excellent observation. very comprehensive video. Just one point to add: No more 5 seater version after the 2007 facelift. This is one of the reasons why there are still so many pre-facelift version around: Owners would rather replace engines of them to keep the flexibility --- sometimes customers do call to request for a 5 seater so that they don't have to pay for two taxis. When this happens usually 4 people will squeeze into the back row, and the bigger person in to group take the front. Usually the middle front seat is occupied by the driver's stuffs.

I've heard of the Toyota Crown Comfort, but for some reason, very few, if any were ever sold in the USA, so therefore, I've never seen one in person. I'd prefer this any day over a Toyota Prius, a Nissan VN200, and the Ford Connect.
