Got a visit by a Toyota Corolla Verso 2005 that was running on three cylinders only. The engine is the 1,8 liter 1ZZ-FE , VVT-i .
First and easiest to check is if any fuel injector was out. Disconnecting one at a time could have revealed by the sound of the engine that it was cylinder number four that misfired. However, the resistance was fine at just over 15 ohms, so the primary suspect became the ignition.
The ignition coil number four (near the gear box) was swapped with coil number three. A car scanner app and a universal ELM 327 OBD2 code reader revealed that the misfire was moved from cylinder number four to number three. The fuel injector disconnection method is an option if one has no code reader.
The coil was marked:
Toyota 90080 - 19019 Denso Made in Spain
The nearest scrap yard had a good one and for 30 Euro the problem was solved!
