Hi, I've been watching your videos and learning a lot from them. I figured out the problem with the 4 wheel drive of my 1999 Toyota 4runner - the 4wheel drive works and everything but, the 4wheel drive light flashes every time I start the vehicle. Do you have a suggestion of what is causing the lights to flash? Thank you in advance.

Is it best to replace and add new Differential fluid when replacing the front actuator. And when replacing the actuator do you have the 4runner in 4H or 4 wheel drive off?

I replaced this part and fixed my problem, but new part has a short breather pipe and a bung in it , seems to be glued on. Is this a new mod and how it should be, or does it need to be pulled off and put on old breather???

Great job! Question: why did it seem like the front wheels were rotating slower than the rear wheels. I suspect this is by design - but what its the rationale?
@pbr5493 жыл бұрын
I don't know why but something I think is wrong. My 1999 Tacoma I have owned since new vibrated when it was relatively new because I left it in 4x4 on a hard top road. I realized I was in 4x4 and placed it in 4x2. When I got my oil changed later I asked them to lift it and see if the 4x4 still worked. It did but from memory they were spinning the same speed. Hope fully Peter will answer you question. Great question.
@rogervehrs56093 жыл бұрын
I saw that problem it is just tighter gears in front the rears are looser
@ajcaiati3 жыл бұрын
The left front was not rotating the same speed because it’s a floating differential. If you noticed the right front wheel was keeping the speed of the rear wheels. Think of it as if the right front wheel was losing traction, and the left front wheel was not losing. That’s why the right front was spinning faster than the left front wheel.

So stupid people don't have to move their arm and can just press a button instead. But then it breaks and we have to spend $500 in time parts and labor so lazy people don't have to interact with something manually.

I too noticed the speed difference between front and rear wheels and found that a bit strange. I have not been wrenchin on Toyotas, only LR's and they have 50/50 atleast my Lr3 does Anyways, good video Peter, but perhaps you could show us a bit more og how you do your repairs, like Eric O over at South Main Auto does.. Just a thought

@@pellethoresen4025 it has a Torsen transfer case. The transfer case distributes torque 40/60 in a straight line with no resistance. This changes in turns or with a slipping wheel or axle.

Why did the front wheels rotate significantly slower than the rear wheels w/4wd engaged?
@kb9knd3 жыл бұрын
I was going to say that too. I thought maybe only one rear wheel was turning which would make the other rear wheel spin at twice it’s normal speed, but both rear wheels were spinning fast and both front wheels were slow. I don’t know.
@gavin41573 жыл бұрын
Probably just the center diff not spinning evenly because I’m of the different resistances between how smooth the rear diff is able to turn from the front

The shift actuator on the transfer case is the issue with the front not engaging. It has a fail safe system; is closed loop, undiagnosable with anything. Same with my taco. Pop it out install a new one, probably got water from crack vent tubes, lengthen them and raise the vent higher.
