In Australia a manual GR86 is nearly $5K more expensive than a BRZ because of Toyota Australia’s decision to offer the manual & auto at the same price. The BRZ is the smarter choice.

The suspension is actually different on both cars. Front knuckles are different and rear sway bar are mounted different. So the brz is a little softer and better for a daily

I like that the 86 and the BRZ have the different front ends. The 86 looks like it's intently digging into the drive, while the BRZ is giggling because it's just having fun. Damn I really want one of these.

Did he just say that subaru made the brz more stiff? See people, thats why you cant listen to youtubers, they just dont know what they are talking about. The very only mechanical difference between both cars is the suspension, and the 86 is way stiffer than the brz. The sway bars on the 86 are not only thicker, but they are also mounted directly to the body of the car. On the brz the sway bars are thinner and mounted to the subframe of the rear diff. The sway bar ratio is also different: the brz has the same bar thickness front and back while on the 86 the rear bar is thicker than the front one. Hence why the 86 can hold drifts more precisely than the brz and the brz understeers a bit more. Plus, spring rates and valving are much stiffer on the 86, about 10-15% stiffer, front and back. That makes the brz the better everyday/long trip commuter and the 86 the better track day car...

Funny. All my research suggests the new gen 86 is the more soft on the rear. Proving this point wrong. Of course I should get them side by side and get underneath to really sus it out.

@@ProductReviewCarsmaybe what you found is that yes they did make it softer compared to last gen, because the chassis rigidity went up by a rdiculous 40%. But its only softer compared to last gen, not compared to the suby. On both gens the suby is always softer on the rear than the 86

Yep, which is why if I ever get one it'll be the BRZ, even though the 'yota looks better. I'd daily drive it and the comfort would be a key factor. I don't have a track within hundreds of miles.

Subaru also used aluminum knuckles in the front suspension vs. Toyota using iron. The throttle mapping is just a bit different as well. The BRZ is more linear and the GR86 is more biased toward the top of the pedal travel. Small things that make them just a tiny bit different. The GR86 feels a bit more edgy and the BRZ feels a bit more balanced out.

He got mixed up. The GR is stiffer in the rear and more soft in the front than the BRZ. The trade off is the BRZ is slightly slower through cornering but grips the track better. The BRZ is also a more comfortable daily. I drove both and ended up with the BRZ. Love it. Just need to unfxxck the oil system.

Its the same car so comparing the two is just stupid. Ppl just rather the toyota bc its got a cooler name and toyota jdm badges. Front end is the only major difference and its based off opinion. Personally i like the longer nose on the brz

No, it's not the same. Suspension mounts and tuning are different. BRZ is more compliant, 86 is stiffer. I bought a first-gen BRZ in 2022 just because I don't like the duck bill spoiler they switched to in the second-gen. Plus it was a really good buy - a 2016 with only 13.8k miles and a clean title.

I had 3 warranty covered rod knocks with an FRS but these cars are fuuuuuun and they break necks stock tbh, great daily I got a 2019 86 TRD special edition now, i love it and the last guy put a loud ass catted exhaust + kn filter + 91 octane from Shell + granny shift or downshift and it might pop and bang real nice lol When it blows up eventually I’m definitely gonna want a Honda or Toyota motor + tranny swap on the considerably low vs about $8,000 from Subaru

The engine won't blow up if you just keep it well maintained,the only dodgy ones were the 2013/14 models.i have a 2015 with over 150k miles and I don't drive it sensibly haha

Oh yee! I had the 2013 one with the recall. It was driving better than ever before Toyota worked on it, then they were liable and under warranty for 3 rod knocks within like 5 months. got a refund on it so it was basically free. I felt sponsored. Good times lololol @@user-sk4wf3ve6z

It is. The suspension mounts are a bit different and the tuning of the shocks/struts, springs, and anti-roll bars is different.

One big reason why I would pick the BRZ (and did) over a GR86. Is because it’s a Subaru motor; if you need repairs on the engine… a Subaru mechanic specializes in boxer motors; a Toyota mechanic does not! Having a Toyota mechanic working on a Subaru motor is like having a knee surgeon, working on your spine.
