The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid comes equipped with an On-Demand AWD system. The Electronic On-Demand AWD on the hybrid model offers excellent fuel efficiency, start-off acceleration, handling, and stability. This system achieves stable performance by propelling the rear wheels with a rear motor, providing traction when needed in slippery conditions. The distribution of driving force between the front and rear wheels is precisely controlled, ranging from 100:0 to 20:80, ensuring optimal fuel efficiency and a comfortable driving performance.
Inside, a simple button press allows you to select Trail Mode! Trail Mode is designed to control wheel spinning by integrating AWD, brake, and drive force control systems. It proves beneficial when driving on uneven or bumpy roads.

Better than I was expecting honestly. Still needs more power from the rear electric motor. What fuel economy were you seeing? (Winter temps usually punish hybrids)

Impressively efficient fuel economy ranging from 5.9L (achieved on more favorable roads in eco mode) to 9.7L in less optimal conditions. Considering the size of the vehicle, this performance is truly remarkable!

I have regular Highlander hybrid. The trail mode button really makes a big difference in slick situations. If you don’t press it IMO the AWD sucks.

What is the loud clicking noise from the front end?

The brakes grabbing and letting go. Also, the engine if I remember correctly is direct injected which causes a noticeable clicking/tapping noise.

Indeed, the system extensively utilizes the brakes to provide traction where it's needed. While it may not quite match the noise of the Lexus LX, this feature is present in nearly all Toyota models, or trying to achieve advanced traction control across the lineup.

there is no, snow mode! The snow mode is only available with vehicles with 2.4L 4-cylinder [T24A-FTS] engine.

Great tests, but at this price point it would seem to be better to just get a Subaru Ascent and save some money. This vehicle really seems to struggle with these snow and ice tests....

@@hakarumonoka You are joking right? He purpusefully foudn a bad snow buildup on an incline in slippery conditions and even tried to go slowly and not use momentum at all - to stress the system more. And he did it quite good! What else do you want?? No one is going to go offroading in a huge 3 row family SUV. Grand Highlander is even bigger than Assent. And there is no comparison - GH is head and shoulders better.

It is be putting too little power to the rear wheels even though front wheels are clearly slipping. The car doesn’t seem to sense this. It needs to push from the rear. This seems worse than the systems on RAV4/Venza. Toyota needs to update its control logic through a software update.
