This is the only oil change review I've watched that someone actually fills a little oil into the filter prior to installing, don't know if it makes a difference but it can't hurt either, personally I think it's a good idea! Awesome video covering the whole process and not a 15-20min. video like 85% of the other videos.

I was just about to ask about this very thing. I've never done it. Never seen it recommended by the manual. Seems like an added hassle and mess maker someone invented.

I've seen others fill some oil into the filter too but then again some don't. Maybe just fills it quicker than having it cycle thru the system, I don't know.

@pillingthemsoftly47383 жыл бұрын
Very good video! Just changed the oil on the wife's 2017 AWD XLE. Some things I would add to help others: #1. Use a 27mm socket on the filter housing tool (Motivx), rather than just sticking a 3/8 drive ratchet on it, to remove it (I (very carefully) needed to use a breaker bar it was so tight from whoever did it last, my wife just bought it, so first oil change by me). When torquing back down, then I think it's okay to just stick the torque wrench into the 3/8 hole. (I also recommend buying the more expensive Motivx FORGED aluminum filter housing tool that is stronger, than the cheap one linked in the description). #2. Buy the 3-pack of filters for $18 instead of 1 for $9 (Amazon). The 3-pack came with 3 drain plug crush washers (all 3 in one of the boxes). Some reviewers were complaining the single pack filter didn't come with the crush washer. #3. Unless you're a big guy, a Highlander is just high enough to get under without even jacking it up or using ramps. This way the car is level and will drain more oil out. (Be sure your driveway/garage is level, of course.) #4. Always use full synthetic, especially in newer/modern vehicles. I got the same 0w-20 Mobil 1 (full syn) Advanced Fuel Economy in a 12qt bladder box at walmart for $45! #5. If you want to do a "good job" wipe everything down clean with shop towels to remove old oil and lube new o-rings with new oil with your finger before reinstalling. #6. Unless you're an expert mechanic, do NOT "go by feel" and USE A TORQUE WRENCH! You WILL break the plastic filter housing and strip out your oil pan by over torquing the drain plug! (It's VERY easy to over torque things on oil changes on any vehicle; I always do it myself and avoid oil changing joints like the plague because they are notorious for this.) #7. Torque Specs with conversions: Drain Pug: 30ft/lbs / 40.6nm. Filter housing: 25nm / 18.44 ft/lbs. Filter housing drain plug: 10ft/lbs / 13.5nm. #8. Oil capacity: For my wife's 2017 XLE AWD 3.5L V6 I put in 5.75qt plus some in the filter housing before screwing it back in. The manual says oil capacity is 5.8qt WITH filter for a 2017 3.5L V6. Some people claim it's 6.4qt, but maybe that's for older models? If you're unsure, play it safe by putting in less (5.5qt or so + more in the filter housing before screwing it back in) and adding later if needed. DO NOT OVER FILL! Also, always remember to check your oil when the engine is COLD. If engine is hot, oil is going to be all over the dipstick and you won't be able to get an accurate reading. Let the car run for a few minutes when you're all done to get the oil flowing and then wait until it's cold again and then check oil level.

I noticed he didn't lube the filter drain plug o-ring? Should that be lubed as well or left dry?
@pillingthemsoftly47383 жыл бұрын
@@anotherbrickonthewall You should a little. I think I did a little bit since my fingers were oily anyway, but if you already did the job and forgot to do it, I'm sure it'll be fine since it should get oily around there on it's own when the oil is pumping through the filter. I doubt anything catastrophic will happen if you didn't, unlike over torquing the filter housing and breaking it.

Thanks for the great video! I have stopped using the little plastic drain plug - it seems like it made a bigger mess trying to shove that up into the filter housing and then pulling the plastic thing back out than just taking the filter off, as there is not very much oil remaining in the filter anyway (it's the equivalent of removing a standard canister oil filter from any other vehicle), but otherwise I've followed your steps exactly!

Thanks for the video. I would check the oil level when the vehicle is off the ramp on a leveled surface. BTW, for the 2016 HLs, it takes 6.4-qts of oil to fill to the top level on the dip stick. One more set of those ramps, you will be able to level your HL with enough clearance to change the TC (36-ft/lbs), Rear Diff (29-ft/lbs) fluids as well as the ATF (plus...) in the future.

Hey there, great video since I just bought a 2013 a little over a month ago. Also some great follow up comments especially not over torquing the plastic pieces. I am surprised to see so much plastic. Even more surprised to see this oil change required just a filter (cartridge) rather than a standard replacement filter. I guess I’m not in Kansas anymore, eh Dorothy. Lol. One thing I have had trouble doing with this vehicle, though, is reading the stick. Where I live is on a slope so I can’t check it cold first thing in the morning. I tried stopping and waiting, for what I thought was long enough at the gas station to check but I never could see it accurately. It always seemed like it was coming up short on the stick as I was not getting in nice even sheen on the stick. Now that I have added oil to it thinking I was running low tonight I let it sit for a little longer in a parking lot after doing some food delivery and it appears to be running a bit high. Anybody with some good recommendations?? My thought was to jack it up and drain a little bit out of the pan. I was going to take it out of the filter thinking I could just replace a filter and that amount might be Just enough to lower the oil level but looking at the filter procedure I don’t think I will be going that direction. Any thoughts from anyone?

I bought my oil and filter from the dealer 07/24/2020. The filter was $6 and the oil was $5.91 a quart. Toyota oil is made by Mobil and specially formulated for Toyota engines. I also buy brake pads from the dealer. I like to let my vehicles run a few minutes before an oil change. That way the bearings have oil in them if there is a slight delay in oil delivery after the oil change. I also like to put oil in the oil filter housing on my Highlander before replacing it. It may not be necessary but it puts my mind at ease.

Excellent video and directly to the point. Thank you for also including the torque specs. One minor critique I would like to note is i see you trying to pour the oil bottle upside down. The opening of the bottle is supposed to be on the top as you pour. The bottles are designed with the opening on one side to help avoid spilling the oil when the bottle is full and to prevent the "chug-glug" of the oil is it leaves the bottle. too many people do it the wrong way - opening on the bottom.
