After our cracked piston scenario on our 2012 VX which happened about one year ago,....where we received a new 'Short-Motor' from Toyota Aust....we have done less than 5 thousand kays after the rebuild & now the fuel injector pump has packed up.

should always buy a long motor, and never listen to toyota, go to a good independent mechanic

I have been a mechanic for 26 years. just purchased one of the last v6 prados in Australia to be sold as a demo model. 2017 kakadu v6 10,000 km . I am selling my 2010 d4d before it blows up and am washing my hands of the diesel and all its weaknesses. And the 2.8 with dpf , seriously who would go there.?

why would 2010 d4d blow up? are they are problem too. how many kms did you notch up on it, without problems. curious.

Done quite a lot of tuning on stock D4D 1KD engines, some have well over 500.000km on them and no problems! I have seen failures as described in the video, but most commonly due to mechanical failures (sticky injectors, EGR failures etc)

Great presentation and video. I have a 2 kd with almost 700,000 miles. On mornings if let it idling for five minutes or more it sents lots of blue smoke but, for the rest of the day it stops. How much would a recondition 1 kd engine cost. Or a complete overhauling kit including connecting rod, main bearings and four of the pistions that you recommended in your video. Awaiting your response. Thank you.

rx713bbp since my comment a while ago now I purchased a Prado with the V6 dual VVT-I Excellent on fuel and heaps of power I done a trip with my hilux D4D from Brisbane to Darwin total Fuel cost was $1320 Done the exact trip from Brisbane (give or take 100 kms )to Darwin in my Prado total fuel cost $870 Great fuel economy, yes it uses a little more around town but nothing to raise an eyebrow over Having the peace of mind of not worrying about injectors , common rail issues in general , turbo , shit Diesel , EGR blockages, DPF problems etc ... I stand by my original comment %100 , Cheers

Just had to rebuild a 1kd, hole in piston, other 3 had cracks starting as well. Just did a fill rebuild, sadly got your info too kate so fitted another set of sh!tty toyota bs pistons. Wish i knew about the other options prior anyway keep up the good work

Hi Peter, a mates 1 KD Prado just has done a No 4 piston so this is a hot topic for us. He is looking at getting a engine from you. My question, does the 1GD-FTV 2.8 engines released late 2015 here in Australia have a similar piston issue? Because I have one!

Amazing how Toyota's reliabile diesel engines have changed over the years, i have a 1999 5L 3.0 litre direct injection, non turbo, diesel, so far done 360000 klms, does not use oil, still has plenty of power, had no work done internally on the engine, has been regularly serviced and never driven hard.

Had a 3.0L d4d DC that has done just under 500.000km went to agents for service did the wiring and rewiring to the engine and ECU thing still runs

because they have sold 50x more d4ds than your old diesel, therefore there will be much more cases of engine problems, it's a relative, doesn't mean that the d4d is less reliable, there's hundreds of thousands of these engines out there will incredibly high kms and less than 1%, with cracked piston due to inadequate maintenance and prevention

Yes you can be machined to oversize.
