What are the students in such hurry to leave for? End of the day? Lunch? If they only knew how important it was that you took the time to explain this stuff. The guys that are ready to bust out the door are the ones that dont have the patience to do this kind of stuff. They'll kick themselves for that someday...been there.. Good thing you recorded it for them so when they have a question you can just tell them to watch the video from that day they were in too big of hurry to leave! Paul nice explanation thank you for this great video, I was not clear where you hook up your amp probe on 15.49 of the video, did you connected to a single ground or did you hook up the amp clamp around the 4 wire coil grounds ? because I can see the 4 coils ramp, this is and issue that I have to connect my amp probe on the ground side to see multiples ramps, it is easy when I do it on the fuse but like on this vehicle that is not possible because other circuits share thank you,

Can you explain why you have to use a attenuator on the pico scope and not on the vantage pro to measure ignition and injector waveforms for meter safety purposes
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 9 жыл бұрын
***** Just the way the tools are built. That is more of a question for the engineers. The max input on the newest automotive pico is now 200 vdc, previously it was 100. The Verus, Vantage Pro, Modis is 400 based on the scaling of the scope meter itself.

Hey Paul, I recently purchased a Verus Pro mainly because I find it frustrating sometimes out in the field setting up my Pico, I found the Verus also a bit frustrating when wanting to zoom in on a capture and this video has helped me with that. Thanks. My question though is when changing the sweep to obtain a larger capture am I reducing the capture rate and missing some detail in the capture. I did notice that the coil on isolation's are not visible clearly. I wonder why snap on have chosen not to give us a zoom in feature?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! A longer time base (sweep) will cause your sample intervals to increase, meaning more time between each sample and less detail. As for the zoom feature, you just need to learn to set up your scope differently than you do with the Pico. For the Snap-on scope, you need to set your time base for DETAIL (small time base), let it run for a few, pause the pattern, then zoom out. Now you will have the best of both worlds, detail and repetition. If you have a situation where you are needing to see repetition LIVE, and you need a longer time base to see it, that is when you max out your sample rate by selecting "Peak Detect". Hope that helps. If you need more, I have a 16 part Verus series on ScannerDanner Premium. You can subscribe here www.scannerdanner.com/join-scannerdanner-premium.html There is a 14 day free trial. Thanks!

This thing doesn't run after your disconnected the coil because of the IGF (feedback) signal which tells the PCM that the coils has fired. If the PCM doesn't received that signal it cuts the injectors for all cylinder to protect the catalyst converter. Later model cuts only the cylinder that miss the IGF signal. ALL Toyota cars does that particular thing if they miss IGF signals

now see right here...this is an interesting answer and could be why conventional thinking of what is going on doesnt work because if this guys correct , then the computer is turning off the fuel.This is the problem these days ...anythings possible with computers (cant say ive heard of that, i'm an old diesel mech. but it could be common dealer tech info , i just dont know) it should run on 3 cylinders surely t.f. (conventional thinking) but this answer would explain the engines response in shutting down the fuel .Towards the end was a voice suggesting the cylinder numbering could be wrong ? and you could have in fact pulled the plug on a good coil leaving the poor one + 2 good ones and thereby it would struggle to run on 3 cylinders........i always thought having 4 coil design advantage and one going off meant you werent stranded on the side of the road (pre catalyst thinking? prehistoric more like ).............I'm just going to have to die not knowing eh Paul, ha ha ;¬) i think i wouldve just pulled all the coils and plugs and had a good look at the plugs and played swappy around.........that wouldve spoken to me i reckon...scope was a long way for a short cut on a nice easy access engine like this.I get what you're trying to impart though ..... ;¬)

Great video, but I have found out myself that sometimes when it ignition coil goes bad on a Toyota it may not let the car start at all. In other words it will crank up for just a moment and then stall. I had this happen to me at one time and it really kicked my butt. It turned out to be a coil that was installed by another person and it was defective. I put an ignition coil from Toyota a Denso coil and the car started and ran fine. It was very strange because I never seen this happen before. I thought it was a theft issue with the key and communication between the key fob and the computer.

@ScannerDanner

the on and off time of the coil is controlled by the ECM and/or module or in this case the coil itself. There are logic circuits within some of these too. So if the turn on of the base circuit was not timed exactly with the current ramp on this coil. The coil is still using this to know when to turn the driver on. (logic circuit built into the coil)

Why do the grounds get tied together at the scope? Doesnt the amp probe have its own seperate dc system (from its internal 9v batt) and then the coil wire from the cars 12v batt? So how does the scope know to compare channel 2 to the 12v batt ground and channel 1 to the 9v batt ground?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 жыл бұрын
The 9 volt battery in the amp clamp is completely separate. It is needed for the amp clamp to produce a voltage output that is proportional to the magnetic field it is measuring. So yes, amp clamps produce voltage. You are not looking at amperage on the screen but an amperage equivalent. Did that answer your question?
@ablackformula
@ablackformula 6 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner, perhaps i worded it wrong. The output of the amp probe is a voltage, and is produced by the clamps 9v battery, a completely different dc circuit than the coils control wire and ground circuit. So for the scope to read the clamps output voltage, it must compare channel 1 to the ground of the 9v battery. Yet to read coil voltage, it compares channel 2 to the cars dc ground. Yet the scope uses a common ground for all channels, and for it to work you need to tie all grounds together. Just seems odd to me, as if youve taken the 9v battery ground wire directly to the cars frame.

You may think this was a dumb question,but the reason i asked was i had a Ditex Carscope Viso and the makers of that scope specifically told me not to use it for scope testing while it's charging!:-) And with this being my first Snap-on better safe than sorry. New battery ordered though.

@@robbocop33r12 I've used a docking station for years while teaching classes and had every imaginable condition connected to the scope and scanner functions of the Verus with zero issues. (the docking station is constantly charging the battery) Not a dumb question btw!

Unfortunately KZfaq has placed country restrictions for the paid channels. But there is a way around it using a VPN. Below is a threadI've created a thread on my forum to help. scannerdanner.com/forum/scannerdanner-book-questions-and-discussion/475-access-to-sd-premium-in-non-listed-countries.html Thanks for your interest and I hope you can make it work for you.Paul

Not sure why this link is making you sign up for my forum. You do NOT need to do that. Just go to the forum home page and you'll find a thread "access to SD Premium in non listed countries "

Hang on a minute, do you have the right cylinder number? Engines are numbered from the front (fan or crank end), your Verus showed you an engine diagram with a picture of a fan one end and 1-3-4-2 after wards. You seem to be saying cylinder 3 when it should be cylinder 2 so the Verus is correct when it says cylinder 2

Firing order is different than cylinder layout. It's 1-2-3-4 when counting the cylinders

As you prolly know Paul unplugging the Injector or/and O2 sensor forces OL - does unplugging the coil do the same ?

dear Paul.. thanks so much for Teaching. I'm willing to buy Launch ScanPadII and it's Labscope; are you aware that Launch's Labscope is pretty well or PicoScope is more better? Im giving more value to Launch over Verus because Launch allowed much extra access to resets. Give your suggestion please

Engine stalls and won't start when you unplug one coil would red flag me. I do know that on some vehicles the ECU will kill injectors if the IGF signal is missing, but would it disable all injectors for one coil missing an IGF? Could be you have another coil with a problem other than the one your suspecting and it can't run on 2 cylinders when you disable your #3.

Got a 2000 Corolla 1.8L in the shop this morning for a LOF. Unplugged coil #3 and the engine missed, stalled, and wouldn't restart. If the IGF signal is lost on any of the coils, the PCM will disable fuel injectors. I guess disabling injectors would be better for locating a miss on this design.
