Just did this job; start-to-finish and cleanup, about 30 minutes. These instructions are perfect. My bushings looked almost identical to yours, especially the discoloration on the bottom one. Made a HUGE difference in how smooth it shifts now. Thank you so much!

My 1991 22R-E Truck Bushings went out in 1998 c. 86,000-mi. Dealership repair $100. Only lasted 23 years! Ha ha. Went out again today at 131,800-mi. Deteriorate from 1/ Time and 2/ Wear. Just like tires. Thanks for a GREAT video! This time around will save my $100 by DIY'ing it. Thanks Mate!

I discovered that bushing before the world ever knew what KZfaq was. If you can pick up on the shifter and it works, then the bushing under it is wore out. Great video. I just wish it was around back then. Would have saved me some headaches. But I fixed mine back then same as you did. $12 later and I was back baby! Great feeling to have it work like it's supposed to. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for this video! I did the job yesterday, at 200k my seal was disintegrated, it was almost impossible to shift. What a difference! The most difficult part was to put metal plate back- I have 4x4, so it's two levers. It is smooth like a butter now! Now off to replace clutch cylinders

Just wanted to say thanks! I had a lot of consideration to having my transmission rebuilt. I ordered the kit and replaced the bushings, and now I can FIND 5th gear and reverse on my 98' tacoma 2 wheel drive 2.7, 4 banger. The 1st through 5th geer is tight spaced like new, "(still going places)" with my antique truck with more than 465 thousand Original miles, never rebuilt. Still cold air too! Love these Toyotas! I have the same model year as you. Now I just need to adjust the valves. That's suppose to be part of a regular tune up, but I've never met a mechanic that would do it.

Thanks 1991 Toyota, apparently this is a Common prob with a lot of model yrs. min started with intermittent 5 th gear and reverse then finally could not reverse . When I did the shifter went all the way right! Felt like it was broken. Went to dealer and got it . Stock items. Went home put it on less than 1hr. And wallla! Fixed both shift problems . Unreal. Also I prev had a bracket welds broken on pedal shifter and that’s a mission to fix . See other people videos. But try this fix first too.

Sounds like a couple of people had the same problem I ended up having. Couldn't get the retainer to depress. Then it dawned on me that perhaps the bushing was so far gone that it wasn't holding up the retainer. That ended up being the case. All I needed to do was to turn as the retainer was already down.

Five years ago, I bought my base 2wd '96 Tacoma, for $400. It only had 71K on the clock, but would not go into first or third gear. According to the seller, the repair estimate he got was $2400! Based on my experience, and what I read then, and now, online, the first thing to do is definitely check/replace the shifter saddle and bushing. In my case, there were complications. Apparently, plastic chunks from the saddle had jammed the internal shift-linkage. But I was able to force it into both gears. After driving it for several weeks, the resistance gradually disappeared. I suspect this ground up the chunks into tiny pieces, which then fell harmlessly to the bottom of the gearbox. Now there IS a shifter-cover on the gearbox that I could have (maybe should have) unbolted to check the linkage. But I feared that small metal parts might fall inside, and then I'd have to pull the whole gearbox out. Ironically, three years later, I did have to pull the gearbox to R&R the clutch after it started slipping. I figure the previous owner starting out in second gear probably helped kill it. The parts only cost $130. But there's no removable cross-member under my 2WD Tacoma's gearbox. Working on ramps in my driveway, the clutch job took nearly a week! But at least the fluid got changed, along with all that ground up plastic!

I have the same '94 Toy PU, only red. I've had no issues shifting, but when it was up on the rack the other day, it appeared to be gushing gear oil out of the shifter connection. I'm gonna guess my bushing is destroyed or missing as well! Thanks for putting this up, I could not see how to remove the shifter boot, seems the carpet is glued to the floor! I will try again once I get the correct parts. Just turned over 266,000 miles this week! runs great but in need of some TLC, I'd love that new truck ride, but the insurance and registration (in CA) fees are prohibitive! Leaking at the valve cover gasket as well, but these are minor and easy fixes. My steering gearbox is failing though also, and I'm not sure if I can do that job.

i used this video to guide me thru the same repair on my 1991 Hilux Pickup (Toyota) that would jump out of first gear if I did not hold the shifter when moving off of a full stop. Put up with that for 7 years before I stumbled on this video. Took about an hour, mostly because the shift cap would not unscrew so I could not get the rubber out of my way and had to work around it. I chose to lubricate the parts with motor oil because I was looking right into the transmission case so it seemed obvious that the unit was supposed to be lubricated this way. Ok. Might not have been my best idea but it seemed smarter than using a haphazard lubricant that might eat the plastic parts I just installed. Had to slice the carpet to get the parts out so I planned the cuts and laced them up with black shoelaces to make it look cool. I am 70 and considered this one of the easiest repairs I have every done. Helped that I keep the passenger seat in storage so my German Shepherd can ride with me inside.

I have hard time starting the engine. It starts in the morning, but after engine warms up, stepping on the clutch pedal deep and turn the key on nothing moves. I understand that there's a engine switch at the bottom of the clutch pedal. Unless it's depressed by the pedal(to all the way), it won't start. It's been hard since I bought it(2000 Tacoma) but lately it's becoming even harder. What can be the cause? I will adjust the pedal switch(found it online) and see if it works but if it doesn't, I'll be in big trouble.

I have a 1993 Toyota 4x4 3.0 liter truck and the shop told me that I need to replace the slave cylinder and the clutch for 1900.00 dollars. So I went and bought a brand new truck for 37,000 dollars. I still have the Toyota and want to fix it and I'll try this. If this is the problem im gonna shit self because now I have a nice truck payment and I could have fixed it by doing this. But I also have to install new leaf springs and front suspension so it's still needs some work but im kerping this neat truck. It has 228,000 miles and drives like a dreamwhen running. I still turn it on and warm it up every week and put it in gear and dtive it up and down alley to keep it good.

You're doing the right thing by getting a new truck while you can still sell the old one. Hope this shift bushing fix does the trick! = )

Hmmm.... Ford Transit is a different beast than Toyota Pickup. Sounds like there is a lot of miles on the Transit? Maybe the syncros going out.

When in doubt silicone paste. I've never had it eat plastic or rubber. My understanding is that it's basically inert so compatable with nearly anything.

Got a '07 Toy. Matrix. While in 4th for a minute, stick snapped back to Neutral. Did that a few times that day on highway. Then l tried duplicating that again in 4th with 200 xtra lbs of weight another day..nothing happened. Don't want to force it on high rpm in fourth. Not sure what's up. Just spent 1,300 on wife's other Toy. for tires and frnt. links. Any ideas?

$1,300 OUCH! It relatively easy to check the bushings at the shift lever. Check that first

that metal slotted cuff at the base of the gear shifter, I can't get mine to move. are there any tricks? I tried channel lock handle, just like you show, but it won't budge. it just won't move down far enough no even with the maximum force I can muster.

Penalty! Spray some penatrant , rust release, in there. Tap on it with a small hammer and a drift to loosen it up. You'll get it!
