Ya it's a vent for gases to go outside instead of in the car. Battery will last just as long. Lead acid battery fumes are explosive. Plus all the covers are not even close to air tight.

Thanks for this EXTREMELY important tip! I found the suggested AC Delco battery on Amazon. I probably would have never known to look for a specific battery designed with a vent tube if it were not for your video - thanks again!

Actualy the author of the video mistakenly said that the battery needs air. The battery does not need air, the ventilation is there to EXHAUST acid gases that form while charging and discharging the battery and can be harmfull to inhale in the car.

I thought that vent tube was to let hydrogen gases vent outside when its charging.

A mechanic told me it was to vent fumes, another sait it provides air. Found out after I uploaded the video. Not sure EXACTLY what it does, but no matter what, it is there for a reason, and I firmly believe that when replacing your battery, you should go with the exact way it was designed to work! Ignoring that can simply cut short the life of the new battery, or damage something else, in the case of gases that need to be vented out.

My Generation 1 Prius has the vent port for the 12VDC Auxiliary Battery just like the newer generations. When you replace this battery make sure it is an Absorbed Glass Mat battery, not lead/acid.

Dealer quoted $450. This is really a simple 15min diy job. Buy the battery from OReilly/Autozone $218, or Amazon $157.

Hi to all!The new Agm/gel sealed battery don't have the hole for vent tube because are completely sealed and inner gas is reused. What do you think? Thanks for your answer.

I had a Mercedes in the 1980's and its battery had a vent tube. Not only did the battery cost small fortune but I took the battery to the Mercedes dealer and asked to buy a replacement. They refused to sell me a battery because I did not bring the car in. I told them that if the car would start I wouldn't need a battery. Their battery was a flooded lead/acid battery and the vent tube was there to keep battery acid from leaking inside the battery tray. I stopped at an Interstate Battery store on the way home and bought an AGM battery that couldn't leak and cost less that a tenth of the Mercedes battery and lasted much longer. That wouldn't work for the Prius battery because all lead/acid batteries produce hydrogen when charging and battery is inside the car.

This is the worst design imaginable for a 12 V battery. Any of us can swap out a 12 V in any other car within 15 minutes. Getting this beast out can take over an hour and it’s very frustrating and dangerous.

Yeah it's a bit uncomfortable. But you need the proper battery, as every other battery WILL NOT FIT, except this one, the gold series..... amzn.to/3PR2ChG

I did it about 20 minutes...it's simple. The battery 8n my 2015 Silverado took longer because components are bolted on top of it.

It only took me 10min and I'm not a car mechanic or engineer. Simple enough once you're careful to follow all the steps of removing it in reverse

I literally bought the car, and it had no issue until I tried charging the battery - noxious pong. Then I noted the battery type was in fact, for an underbonnet area ie no vent pipe fitting. - For under the hood, sorry, where there is ventilation. I had to look pretty hard to get the correct one. Then drill out with I think a 5mm drill bit, with a length of tubing so I can only drill about a cm deep into the battery. Then the std Prius vent pipe fits, and away we go, safe exit of fumes. Shouldn’t really pass a motor vehicle test like that either. Take care all.
