The best use of a plug in hybrid really depends on the user. I have a MG HS PHEV, I have driven just over 2000 kms which includes a couple of 300 kms trip each as well. The total fuel economy I have got over these 2000 kms is just 2.3L/100 km. The key is to drive in pure EV on a day to day basis, which is very quite and very enjoyable to drive. And when you need to do over the EV limit for the day or a road trip, then use the hybrid mode. And most importantly, just plug your car in the night before you need it. Simple, not much of a hassle!

@@brokenSnake I don't think so. A normal petrol version of HS will probably give you 7-8 l/100 kms. 2.3l/100 km is not too far away from claimed 1.7l/100 km by MG. We have to remember that it will use some fuel if you go for longer trips

Nadine's closing remarks sound like they were scripted by Toyota. It mirrors their line and their whole anti-plug rhetoric: 'It's too much hassle to plug something in, Australians don't like plugging things in'. Funny, because Australians plug in power tools all the time, as well as vacuum cleaners and a host of other electrical items, that basically take the same time to plug in/unplug as it does to plug in this PHEV.

Not everyone has the ability to 'plug in' (no garage/accessible power) but you are absolutely right, the majority of the population only needs so much range and have the ability to plug in at home daily. The average Australian lives in suburbia, has a garage (and or external power) and only does like 30km a day on average.

Honestly why would you bother with a hybrid when you can get a PHEV? If petrol goes through the roof then you can do most of your commute on pure EV mode, or all of it if your round trip is less than 50km?

Just bought an Mg Hs hybrid after test driving the Toyota Rav 4. There really isn't a comparison! Mg drive,fuel consumption and interiors are far superior! My Mg system is not slow. Not sure what you are complaining about as not fast enough.. Mg actually won car of the year here in UK and with a 5 star crash test.

Its reviews like this that make me question journalistic integrity. I can't speak for Australia but here in the UK the equivalent rav4 would be 40 to 50% more expensive than the mg. As for fuel economy even in your test the mg has the rav for dinner. Again here in the uk the difference would be even greater as most journeys could be done in electric only. I was so amazed at the interior quality and drive of the mg that I ordered one right after our test drive.

You forgot to mention that the MG doesn't feel like your driving a Prius with a lift kit. The 10 speed auto beats the horrible Toyota CVT every time. Of and the MG is a lot quicker to accelerate.

In my experience Toyota hybrids are buttery smooth, but noisy depending on the model/engine.

@@jay-uo2bi Theyre smooth because there is only one gear with an ratio based upon belt position and load. They are noisy because they keep the engine running at high RPM. Modern auto boxes can be almost as smooth without the awful howl of a CVT.,

i was considering both vehicles but ended up going with MG HS PHEV. so glad i did. Design and Interior is no comparison especially at night with mood lightings, and fuel economy is second to none coz I get free recharge from shopping centres and wherever I have access to electric charge point. my overall combined avg. has been 2.5L/100km and because I mainly do short 10km trips around town, I'm still running near full tank from the fuel the dealer filled up almost 1.5 months since picking up the car.. If you don't have easy access to Type2 chargers nearby, you maybe better off with RAV4 however since it recharges with fuel.. Having said that, in my case MG HS PHEV was definitely the better choice with 7yr warranty and nearly $5000 cheaper overall with no fuel costs. And it just drives so quick and beautifully if you drive pure EV mode which RAV4 cannot.

Yep. Trickle charging with a normal 240V is fine for a PHEV.

be aware that fuel does start to go stale after about a month so maybe only fill up half way at a time if you rarely use it.

Yes, the MG can do the work/school/supermarket run on EV only power and not use the ICE at all for those short trips. The Rav4 runs on the ICE most of the time. Saying this is more work than the self charging Rav4 did a disservice to the MG. You can run the MG as a self charging hybrid as well if you think it's a hassle to plug it in at home overnight as needed.

Totally useless fuel consumption review, the fact is that if you drive short distances, plug in every night, the MG will use basically no fuel. There is no point charging the MG then driving 200km and saying it used less fuel than the Toyota. If you have a place to charge at home and don't drive massive amounts, the MG is the car to have. If you don't have a place to charge, and you use is ad-hoc, long distances etc. The regular hybrid is the way to go. The need for 95 octane on the MG is a down point for me also, this isn't a preformance car. With the MG, mkae sure you charge it off peak (or with Solar) and don't forget that PHEV Tax in Victoria.

Apparently the Vic govt also has a hybrid tax. It is a less than the EV tax but still a tax.

@@DJAYPAZ It does, 2.5c per KM for the full EV and 2.0c for the Plug in Hybrid. If you don't plug your car in, the tax will kill you. Ypou do however get a $100 per year registration discount.

Another reviewer said on a flat battery he got 9L/100km, in "auto" mode it got 6.9L/100km and primarily EV driving saw 1L/100km. Based on that, you're unlikely to get near 1000km

It was an otherwise reasonable review, but I did not appreciate 1. hiding the price differential by excluding the ORC and then saying they are comparable in price - blatantly not true, and also comparing apples with oranges. Why not compare the MG with Mitsu PHEV? The EV tax consequences should have been mentioned also at the same time as the 95 RON requirement as they are both equal negatives.

I've had a RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser on order for nearly 9 months and still don't even have a build date yet. Got sick of that , ordered an MG HS Plus EV Excite on Thursday afternoon and expect to collect it on Tuesday. The RAV4 may be theoretically better overall but the MG is actually available.

Theoretically better ? The interior on the mg suits all over the big T if it wasn't for the mg badge you'd think you were in a euro .the R4 is a hybrid the MG is a proper hybrid or phev sure the RAV4 has decent power outputs but the MG has better . You made a wise decision choosing the MG from real owners review it's been positive so it's safe to say many years later will have good resale value

I bought Toyota Prius 2013 . Amazing money saver . $4 does do job to me . 2 kids drop school. Shopping Aircon 100 km -3.2 lt And I paid only $9000

Thanks Nadine, for a nicely presented and useful review. Plus you gave an opinion as to which you'd prefer, which is always nice. We looked very hard at the MG and thought it was quite impressive, although the way the hybrid system is set up didn't suit us, and a 37 litre fuel tank is not appropriate to our needs. In the $45-$55 region there are a good number of vehicles to consider, and indeed, we lobbed for an Outback Touring at about $7k more than the MG and perhaps $4 more than the Toyota. It just suited our needs better: we go on longer trips, rather daily driving where the MG excels.. But as a second car, the MG would be on our short list.

Based of the report fuel consumption, range of the vehicle would be at least 900 kms. Why would that not suit your needs ?

@@DJAYPAZ the reasons are quite simple: the projected fuel economy you mention is unachievable, sure to the way the "hybrid" system is set up; the size is also a bit small given what we wish to use it for. As Nadine says, the batteries are used to give extra (usually initial) range until deleted and from then on, it must use it's petrol engine. So a trip of day 600km means only the first 50km or so if done under battery power. We also regularly carry a lot of archery great and we'd struggle to get all of that in.

@@metalmick99 Thank you for replying. The space requirement is a show lstopper. If the car is too small for your gear that eliminates the MG from further consideration. The achievable fuel economy is debatable of course. A member of our EV group reported that over a total of 2000 kms travelled he had measured 2.3 litres / 100k. Of course it depends of many variables such as the number of EV only trips vs longer trips.

Front armrest can be moved both back and forth so that you can rest your arm on it.

The Rav is more versatile with longer range. 1170kms v 638kms. Entry level Rav hybrids are also notably more affordable to purchase.

The MG is nice to drive and has stunning electronics. If you only regularly commute a very short distance like 42k in total by one tester then full EV is possible. However the RAV has a hybrid drive that has been around really since 2009 ( and earlier) it is extremely durable. Our Prius gen 3 is still running strong on original battery and gets under 5 litres per 100k after 250,000k . Totally reliable. The RAV on a longer journey will get much better fuel economy than the MG which will be carrying the dead weight of flat batteries which the car will not charge. And guess what is the most popular car in Mongolia... it's a Toyota Prius I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this in 2017 in Ulaanbaata! Excellent review. Very impressed with the MG driving one today!

In all hybrid vehicles the engine can and will charge the battery via the on-board generator. So, in the MG, provided it is not in EV mode, the engine will charge the battery, as well as providing power to the wheels.

Not sure what we are comparing here? My wife drives the Rav hybrid, and I am quite impressed with its fuel efficiency, how ever compared to a plug-in hybrid, I don’t think you can compare the two. However, the reviewer didn’t mention reliability, resale value, or where the vehicle is manufactured. For those reasons, I would take the Toyota hands down. But I am sure the MG fan boys can wave their flag, for a few less litres per 100 km advantage.🏳️🏳️🏳️.

I would image that those who buy the MG HS PHEV and have accustomed themselves with the “hassle” of plugging their car in each night to charge, will be better position when they decide to buy a full electric car. They may have already purchased the home charging station and perhaps even experienced charging at a public charging stations. Compared that with the RAV4 hybrid driver, the transition for then to the full electric Toyota car, will, at first, definitely be a hassle, as they won’t have the experiences that the PHEV drivers have acquired.

Toyota do not sell their Prime PHEVs in Australia. Apparently this is because there is no demand for cars with plugs, according to Toyota's market research. Which is odd, as Australia is on track to sell 20,000 BEVs this year, an increase of over 100% yoy.

MG wins the design stakes, if the appearance of the vehicles in the video is anything to go by I'd have to disagree. Then there is the brand reputation with Toyota being about the most reliable car brand in Australia. I wouldn't be risking $50,000 on the Chinese built car. Money on the battery on the MG being dead almost dead on 7 years and then the vehicle is worth nothing, or the owner needs to spend >$10,000 to buy a new battery.

I don't think you can rationally base decisions on merits of reliability in a brand-new car, you have plenty of warranty with Chinese cars so who cares? There is plenty of data supporting the longevity and minimal degradation of lithium batteries. The only rational complaint re (new) Chinese cars is resale value imo.

Pls ppl don’t shit on rav4 because you can’t afford it. Each one to its value and price catagory. The amount of problem’s that will show up in MG is unbearable after few years of riding. Rav4 can last you at least 10 years without major problems. Quality over quantity applies here. Once you touch the material rav4 and own one you will never willingly buy an MG. No one that’s considering a rav4 will watch this Video, but if you made ur mind on MG and ur giving urself comfort by warching this comparison and shitting on rav4.

Occasionally junk comes out of China. I bought a chinese hammer once which snapped in two as soon as I hit a nail with it. Turns out the inside was made of some honeycomb substance laquered over with paint. I also bought some Chinese peanut butter that tasted like engine grease. But apart from those two instances, everything I've bought from China has worked fine, and in some cases has been better quality than Euro brands. So you can't really generalise.
