1st long road trip with my 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. I drive to Boston Mass to pick up something very special. I also car camp and talk about room mode. Room mode in the Rav4 Prime is very cool. Works very much like camp mode in a Tesla.
It was a great trip! Camping was fun and I had a great time meeting up with Lee again to buy Rich Rebuild's Tesla trailer.
Thanks for watching and please hit that thumbs up.

Questions for you about the charging station behavior during this experience. I assume you were at a level 2 charger? If so, did the battery ever get fully charged or does it continue to pull current from the charger because of room mode? I had thought about getting a Rav4 Prime and plugging into it at a campground, just using level one charging. It hadn't occurred to me to consider sleeping at a charging station, which I assume would actually save you some money. Also, were you worried about police giving you a hard time for sleeping there?

To this 2013 PlugInPrius driver, it seems like a bit of a gas hog! Then again, AWD is nice in the winter. I liked the trailer before I saw it was also a Tesla pack, (the mind boggles) do I have that correct, is it a "hot" pack still? Or is it now just a really cool all aluminum utility trailer? I noticed even my Toyota Prius 2005 has the same feature/drawback - you can unlock your hatch only from driver door button while the car is switched on and the remote key button does not work in that instance. I believe all Toyota hybrids even older ones have this situation with rear hatch. Toyota RAV4 is much shorter than Tesla Model X. How did you fit sleeping in RAV4 being a tall person by comparison with Model X?
@JamesKlafehn
@JamesKlafehn 3 жыл бұрын
I compare it to the model x after I wake up in it. Its in the video. I think both were comparable. I am 6' tall and I think both were good. Can you say how you enter the “room mode” as I don’t see it on the knobs anywhere and can you test if it can go in that mode when not plugged in? Also, I thought I asked about the ceramic film in here and I don’t see my question. You put a ceramic tint of 50% on all windows, even the back seat windows that were already dark so they are well beyond 50%? And you to tinted all the little windows too? Any tint on the front windshield? (I have a tiny ceramic tint on my Prius v front windshield (like 10-15%) (previous owner installed it and I loved it).

You can enter room mode when you are plugged in. On the dash it will ask you if you want to enter room mode. From the left steering wheel buttons you select yes. I put on a ceramic coating on the car. It wasnt ceramic tint. I put it on all windows except the windshield. If I did it again, Id do the windshield too. I think its perfect. 35% was too dark. INAL. it's illegal in most states, a few states allow passengers to have a open container. But worse than a open container would be a DUI charge. Regardless of where you are seated in the car, where the keys are, or if the vehicle is parked, you can be charged with DUI if you have been drinking. I imagine the details varies between states. love your video so far. it's a bummer about the AC unit. have a similar issue on our Mazda CX-5 the vents get covered. the best solution would be for Toyota to consider ceiling vents in the future or side vents like VW in the cargo area. in the interim a good solution might be to pick up an Amazon sold product that taps into the vents and you can direct air through tubes as a short-term solution. We use it for our dogs and the cargo area. another suggestion would be to put it on fan too and just raise the temperature a bit from 60 to 67 so you won't be cold

Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment! Yeah that’s one thing tesla did right. If you purchased a model X with the third row seat option they give you rear vents. It helps a lot when you’re camping in the back or if you have dogs. It would be nice if Toyota included them

Really like this video. I'd like to know what camping would be like without access to a charger overnight (no room mode, just powered on). How much power it would take to keep the HVAC going all night at various temperatures, and how long it would go on a tank of gas. From your other video, you charged it in 3hr's on less that 2gal of gas to get 12kwh...so sounds like one tank could charge it about 8 times; which is amazing. Would really like to see another video when you see how many nights you could get on a single charge so we could get an idea just how long you could boondock with this amazing vehicle! Maybe just do in your driveway over a cold night and see how much battery goes down???

With your lease, did the leasing company credit you the $7500 tax credit, by reducing sticker price on the lease? Or did they take it for themselves? And if they did credit you, where did you buy it? I can't find a dealer willing build in the tax credit to discount the lease.
@JamesKlafehn
@JamesKlafehn 3 жыл бұрын
When I purchased my 2014 Toyota RAV4 EV they reduced the price of the vehicle by $7500 I thought they were going to do the same thing with this car but unfortunately not. Instead they give you 0% money factor on the lease. It’s essentially 0%. I’m paying something like $92 of interest TOTAL over the entire three years. It’s quite good
@GeraldMMonroe
@GeraldMMonroe 3 жыл бұрын
Say you had bought new. 40k price, you borrow the full amount at 4 percent interest. 1600 in interest a year, over 3 years it is $4800. Not as good as $7500. The real question is the total cost of the lease vs the depreciation you would get with a new vehicle.
@JamesKlafehn
@JamesKlafehn 3 жыл бұрын
Gerald Monroe kinda true. Purchase price was $43,500 ish. Plus fees. Best interest rate with excellent credit I could find was 4.25%. But also, I don’t qualify for the tax credit. So if I bought I’d lose it. Best case is that maybe I’d use $2-$3k of it. So a buy was not a good option. At least I got something with my lease. My lease payments are excellent. As a real estate investor I was also concerned about my DTI. Lease is $493/month. A purchase was going to be nearly $800. You have to also remember that you pay tax on the full price of the vehicle up front with a purchase. With a lease I only pay tax on my payment amount. My interest rate on my lease is 0%

Financed my Rav 4 Prime for 1.99% 60 months is $2,000 interest. I will drop the $7,500 tax credit next Spring when I do my taxes and knock interest down to $1,400 and payoff 3 years 8 months. I think it would be better to finance, pay $1,400 interest and take the $7,500 and drop on the principle vs lease and have the interest rate dropped to zero instead of taking the federal tax credit.

Good info. A bunch of info that's never in the advertising blurbs (and often not in the owner's manuals). I realize how lucky I am to have a Prius. I was thinking RAV4 for several reasons, but the Prius suits my uses better. Better mpg, more room inside, I still tow 1000lbs. though not often or far, so far. I've done the calcs 1000 is my max. In the Prius I have a pull cord on the rear hatch to open it from inside (with a toggle so I can find it in the dark). Not high tech, but it works every time, and would even if there was no battery power. In the RAV I believe you could do something similar (probably more of a little lever latch). Each to their own, but leasing and forfeiting the federal tax credit of $7,500 is not a good move. If you can’t afford the monthly payment finance for 7 years and when you get the $7,500 tax credit next Spring drop it in the automobile and refinance to 60 months. The interest you will pay will be much less than zero and in the end you will own it.
@JamesKlafehn

You keep posting this. NOT EVERYONE CAN USE A TAX CREDIT. Including me. I got a SMOKING deal on this car. 0% money factor. Basically 0% interest. Telling everyone a blanket statement that leasing is stupid isn’t right or fair. Every situation is different. With a purchase you have to pay all of the tax up front. With a lease I only pay tax on each payment. Also, being a new car they could have issues. With a lease you could walk away at the end if it was bad. Lastly, with new technology happening so rapidly there could be a new car out in 3 years that is 5 times what this car is. Even so, with a lease and 0% interest I can buy this car at the end of my lease and own it for the Same price as if I had purchased it. Maybe $400 more. To me it was a no brainer. You have way more options and it’s not costing me anything.

James Klafehn, Leasing is not a good financial move for personal use and if a person does not have enough of a down payment to finance a monthly payment that is affordable and will be paid off before the warranty expires they bought too much car. Resale on automobiles with tax credits will always take a bigger depreciation hit vs one that does not have a credit and if you don’t take the tax credit up front you will take the depreciation hit on the back end. Simple fact and the public needs to know this simple truth before jumping into a lease.
@JamesKlafehn
@JamesKlafehn 3 жыл бұрын
@@rncondie Not at all. Something isnt yours if you cant have it. I am lucky to get the benefit of 0% financing on the lease, my DTI is lower because my lease payment is only $493 vs $818.63 if I had purchased it, its a new car that could have issues so I could walk away and not worry about trying to sell it, and I am saving $4,117.71 in interest. Interest Id have to pay if I purchased it. I get that you have a strong opinion of this but its not cut and dry. Its going to be different for everyone. If you can make use of the $7500 tax credit we are generously given AND you want to own a vehicle then by all means, buy it. But you have to know that your payments are going to be higher and you will have a higher loan on your credit report. It could effect getting future loans. I am extremely happy with my situation and leasing is going to work out great for me while not costing me more in the end if I decide to buy it at the end of the term (which I am planning on doing)

James Klafehn I understand you got burned on the Tesla. Enjoy your new Rav 4 Prime. Just realize there is a cost associated with paying a lower monthly payment. For me financing makes sense because I got 1.99% and dropping the $7,500 on the loan next Spring means knocking a year off and total interest will be $1,400 and I will own the Prime outright in 3 yrs 8 months.

@rncondie 3 жыл бұрын
James, if you are paying $493 to lease per month for a $43,000 car and at the end of the lease for another $400 you will own it something is missing from the equation. You either put down a hefty amount or your lease will go for 7 plus years or you have been lied to. I would check over the lease agreement. If you were told you can pay $493 for a lease and at the end pay another $400 to own it someone is not being truthful with you assuming you did not put anything down on the lease.
