Can a non-expert rebuild the Porsche 356 king pin suspension? I feel like the hard part is over now that I've completely disassembled my cars front end. HINT: It's not that hard.
I'm lucky to have some factory inspection tools that do help check if your suspension components are bent. P69 and P70
One of my homemade tools disintegrated under pressure which was fun. However I'm not discouraged and I'm sure I can those bearings out with an easily machined tool.
Please enjoy this long video and if you do attempt this yourself, please be careful when using a shop press. Things can break without warning.

I starting on mine this week. My 63 T6 was put together by a flipper In Newport Beach with whatever they had laying around just to get as a roller. After major metal work from rust and major wreck I’m about to attack this mess. Unfortunately I do t have access to those factory tools. Maybe the swap meet on April 28 2024 at empi in Orange will have someone there that has those tools that I can check my stuff. Your videos help me along on this 1 1/2 year so far build. Thanks again

Great I ordered a control arm from a guy on samba yesterday . The one on the right was replace with a pre a one. The car was in a pretty bad accident and flipped over. Got all the rust repaired and all body work is done . I want to short out the suspension before I paint it. When I get the arm and clean up all the parts I’ll message you to arrange a time to meet at your convenience. I’m pretty close by in Diamond bar. Thanks Andre

Thanks Chris! They are quirky cars for sure. There's definitely a soft spot in my heart for the 356 too. Each car is a totally different theme. One is classy and one is nasty.

Garage Time - Restomod Thank you! BTW...I have the same workshop manual, and like yours, it does not go to the garage. I copy the relevant pages and the copies go to the bench. Sometimes I just take a phone photo of the material I need. What a valuable document.

I think the expansion from heating the kingpin assembly probably helps break the bond between them. As the diameter of both bore and kingpin expand (at the same rate), the bond is disturbed to some extent. In any case, if you can't something like that apart, heat always seems to be the ultimate answer.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto Жыл бұрын
I agree, try heat vibration and penetrating oil on stubborn parts. Behind the scenes I've been breaking apart parts that have been left outside. I bought 14 pallets of Porsche parts mostly for resale. I've been able to get everything apart eventually 🙂. Some things have to soak for days though.

Great video and your kid with the guitar makes it better. As a car buff/long time musician I can definitely appreciate it. In my arsenal of instruments I have one of those Squier guitars albeit hotrodded with better electronics and hardware. They’re fantastic instruments for the price. At the time I was learning you needed to pay at least $800 for a decent guitar to play on; nowadays you can find decent quality sometimes for even less that $100.00.

Thanks, I'm learning more about guitars now. My son and I are making one on a CNC machine. Maybe will share a few clips if the process. My kid has picked out all the electronics already.

The reason the spindle would not fit the P69 tool properly is you are missing the supplemental parts to work with 356c spindles it is a set of spacer/adapter rings (p69a)

Do kingpin bushings really need replacement? Yup essential to replace kingpin thrust washer. Also found that only linkpin bushings are required: linkpins themselves ok.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 4 жыл бұрын
Everyone's car is different I suppose. My link pins were trashed, new bushings would be loose for sure. My king pins are worn and you can feel a line in the king pin bushings. The line is right where the grease grove is on the pin. When I bought my car it lived on a dirt road, and it was poorly maintained. I'm going with all new stuff and I should never need to do this again.

Hey Tom I watch all your videos and love your work, I do have a question for you and it is that, in your video you talked about making sure that a longer bolt was installed to stop the front tires hitting the cars inner body, is this absolutely needed, as I wonder if the constant hitting the bolt on full turn would finally wear it down to be useless, would it make more sense to use two longer bolts on the one side and looking at the two parts that connect the king pin together, would using the entire length of the them, without the extended bolt makes more sense, please either answer me here or add a note into your next assembly video of the parts so that I will know what I need to do? Cheers Gil.
@GarageTimeAutoResto

Hi, thanks for watching. You may have noticed that I didn't back that bolt out with the impact wrench. I used a ratchet instead because the end was a little mushroomed or the threads weren't pristine. I'll have a look at it again when it goes back together, but my guess is that it's random if two bolts would contact at the same time. Most of the load will be on one or the other and it will wear first. I don't think this is a high wear item. Probably not worth thinking too much about it. Other than don't leave it out.
@PatBuckleyracecar
@PatBuckleyracecar 3 жыл бұрын
At around 14:00 - if you see wear on ONE side of almost any of those parts it is a pretty good assumption that they are bent.
