Heart rate and pulse rate should be identical, and a pulse of approximately equal quality should be produced by each heartbeat. ***Meaning while you are listening to the heart rate you should be feeling the pulse in the rear leg at the same time. With every heartbeat, you hear you should feel the pulse beat in the rear leg SIMULTANEOUSLY***** Peripheral arterial pulses should be palpated to determine pulse rate and pulse quality in every patient. Pulses generally are palpated by way of the femoral artery, which is located high on the medial thigh of the animal. Digital pressure should be applied over the femoral artery by using the tips of the fingers. Some degree of pressure will be required to feel the pulse, but excessive pressure could compress the vessel, making the pulse difficult to feel. The degree of pressure needed will vary from patient to patient. The pulse rate (per minute) is calculated by counting the number of pulses palpated for 15 seconds and multiplying by 4. Absence of a palpable pulse (or a significant change in pulse quality) with an audible heartbeat is called a pulse deficit. That is why when making a medical note in the patient record, a normal pulse is "strong and synchronize"
