It's most likely so he can engage reverse easily as it's straight cut not syncro, it's why dog sequential leavers have buttons or leavers on then in r5/ wrc cars

I know I'm kinna late with the reply but it's probably the original 2 stroke 2cyl motor, just tuned, these things can be tuned up to about 70hp which is enough for a car that weighs 600kg stock (seems like they did some weight reduction to it so it might be even lighter)

@@skeed.5768 It's not smoking enough to be the original engine. Probably a VW Polo engine, that's the most common swap

"not smoking enough" ,you'd be surprised at how little smoke the car can produce if the oil mixture is right. Also throughout the video there isn't a single frame showing the back of the car so you can't even tell how much smoke it makes. There is no way that's a polo engine ,listen to it ,it's definitely​ a 2 stroke. Might be a Wartburg engine although they sound a bit different.

@@XLordLeamingtonX It's the original engine/gearbox config, tuned of course to about 70-80hp. You can hear that's not a four stroke. And also the original gears tick is a hint.

@@XLordLeamingtonX fuel you get at gas stations today contains ethanol to make it cheaper along with other additives to make it run smoothly in a four stroke engine. this is very bad for a trabant engine which was designed before that shit became commonplace, so most Trabant drivers you see on the road mix in more oil in an attempt to increase the longevity of the engine, hence the smoke. airports that service vintage aircraft still sell the high quality gasoline the Trabant is supposed to run on and people who race Trabant usually use that, they also fine tune their fuel-oil mixture much more carefully to get the best performance out of it, whereas road drivers often just eyeball it with the idea being "too much is better than too little"

***** bin selber jahrelang trabi gefahren. doch "versehentliches schalten wenn man auf das lenkrad demmelt", wie soll das denn gehn? ich hab mich höchstens verschalten, also in den falschen gang, wenn ich wirklich schalten wollte. da geht ein verschalten bei der heutigen h-schaltung wesentlich einfacher.

Abkürzung über den Acker oder rechts an der Schikane vorbei ... alles dabei :D
