Have you ever seen a flight overhead and wondered where it is going? Or seen a unique-looking aircraft and wondered what type or model it was? Well, today I've got something exciting to share with the aviation enthusiasts out there. We're going to set up our own flight tracker using the FlightAware Pro USB stick and a Raspberry Pi.

I'd like to also test out plain old SDR and see some of the data coming in unfiltered. Could be cool to try programming my own little map too, mostly to see how ADS-B works. But I may try this project someday, as I love messing around with FlightAware already!

Programming your ADS-B decoder and mini map would be a really interesting project, and probably not all that difficult to do. I found this site to be quite an interesting read on decoding ADS-B and Mode S messages - mode-s.org/decode/misc/preface.html

It's been a really fun project to put a spare Pi to use - apparently it'll run on a Pi Zero W or Zero 2 W as well which makes it quite inexpensive.

Ok, I ordered the equipment and will hook it up when I get it.

I set up Pi-Aware on a Zero 2 w and want to make it solar-powered. So far, it runs well during the day but doesn't make it through the night. I use the Solar Power Manager (B), Embedded 10000mAh Li-Po Battery from Waveshare, and Solar Panel (5.5V 6W).

I haven't measured the consumption of the Pi-aware stick but I'd imagine that this is relatively low compared to the Pi Zero 2. Just a rough look at your hardware - your Pi setup is probably using around 30Wh per day. Your Waveshare battery and controller can store 37Wh max so that's a bit close but still ok. Your solar panel probably provides about 20-30Wh per day best case which is also very close but should be ok if getting full sun each day. So either your panel is not outputting near it's rated 6W in full sun, leaving the waveshare battery semi-depleted when the sun sets or your Pi setup is drawing significantly more than it would at idle without the Pi-aware stick. It's probably worth measuring both of these things during the day.

would love to see a video of this with a 3d printed enclosure and a dedicated screen if its possible

They do have an option for a compatible waveshare display on their standard disk image, I'll look into this.

Is Flight Aware just a glorified SDR? What does it cost?
@BenCos2018
@BenCos2018 3 ай бұрын
Yep it's a sdr Around 70 I'd go with the one from the airplanes . Live store personally if you are in the US or Canada
@MichaelKlements
@MichaelKlements 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by "glorified" as they don't make it out to be anything other than an ADS-B receiver that they've put their branding onto, but yes it's essentially an SDR and costs $35-$40 from their web store depending on the model you get.

Hi Michael, by glorified I meant that it's an SDR that has had its functionality reduced from an SDR that can do very "large" frequency range to one that does a very "narrow" frequency range specifically for the ADSB frequency. Just wonder if it can be hacked to increase the range
@MichaelKlements
@MichaelKlements 3 ай бұрын
Yes it has a built in filter to target the 1090 MHz frequency as this improves its range at this frequency, it's purpose built as an ADS-B receiver rather than a generic SDR.
