My thoughts are: take a joke in context. TV shows like South Park or Family Guy are offensive, but they're equally offensive to every kind of person. It's fine when it's taken in this regard. If a friend tells you a couple offensive jokes and it was in that kind of context where they're just making fun of people in general, why should it matter? If you find it funny, laugh and enjoy your friend's company.

This video, and some of the comments, brings back a memory of something that happened a couple decades ago when my parents and I were at a train station near Washington, DC. We were waiting for a train but weren't sure whether a particular one would take us where we wanted to go. There was a black woman, perhaps 50 years ago, sitting and waiting for the train. My father asked this woman if the train went to that area, and the woman answered him with the information. However, my father was so "apologetic" about asking her ("sorry to disturb you"), and said so before asking and then afterward, acting as if he had asked the president, queen or pope. I felt so embarrassed, thinking this was not Mississippi in the 1950s in that some "social norm" had been violated. I almost wanted to apologize to the woman, saying that my father, who was perhaps 70 at the time, grew up in a different era, but realized doing so would awkward and would make it worse.

Love this channel always impressed by the depth the writing and acting takes. Her cutting him off and assuming he wanted money... questionably racism in my eyes. I think anyone would assume someone saying “excuse me” as you come out of a downtown restaurant is either selling something or asking for money. You should give people a chance to speak tho before cutting them off multiple times. That’s where I started to think she wasn’t so just after all

Depending on how you look at it, this skit can be interpreted in a number of ways: 1. Actions speak louder than words: the woman was indignant over racist jokes yet showed that she was racially biased towards a black person. 2. Everyone has a little bit of racism. We end up absorbing it because it's all around us, and it can either manifest in racial jokes or in snap judgments based in race. 3. Humour is a great way to test compatibility with people. The guy's jokes may have been based on racial stereotypes, but the night would have gone very differently if she had laughed along. 4. Everyone is a little messy, so don't be quick to dismiss people. Yes, the guy could have told better jokes but the bad jokes don't make him a bad person. Similarly, the black guy could have been dressed better but bad clothes don't make him homeless. It's better to take a moment to think about things than jump to conclusions. Anyway, this was a good thought-provoking piece. Well done.

@@EasterTurkey nearly every sitcom has pulled the "woman faking orgasms" trope. The point is that you see the joke about that as a joke on a subset of men, and not the entirety, but see the joke about ribs as a joke against all black people. Who's to say there isn't a subset of black people crazy obsessed with ribs that deserve ridicule? And the joke is directed specifically at them instead of all black people? Also, I don't understand why liking ribs is a negative stereotype. It's probably an odd/annoying one, but how is it any worse than, say, the one about Russians liking vodka?

I don't trust anyone who takes offense on behalf of others. My generation grew up on Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay, etc. Jokes about race and stereotypes and overexaggerations were the par, and they brought people together. I know because I went to dozens of comedy shows in my life. Living in Philly, every crowd was always huge, and mixed, black and white together, having a good ol' time laughing together over what people today would call "racist jokes about stereotypes." Crazy to think how many "racist jokes" have evoked laughter to soften people's hearts. But there's always been people who just "can't take a joke." Only now they don't try to just cancel people's careers, but ruin their lives... over jokes..
@bgos47272 жыл бұрын
@@Oahspe idk... that can go very wrong. Joking let's to normalization and popularization... and it can give actual racist a scapegoat under the excuse of dark humor. @dinos96072 жыл бұрын
So, what is wrong with racist jokes? In this example people would complain about the "rib joke" but I have never heard anyone complain about "long genitals" racist jokes even if they are more racist than the "rib joke", precisely because it casts the "joked race" in an advantageous position. If anyone wants to be genuine he has to accept all or dismiss all and not just go "case per case" as his/her interest. As for racism, what is it? In the end there is no greater racism than a mother's love for her own kids. The thing is that we have to accept the fact that even newborns are racist, extremely racist : they turn around and they recognize familiar faces while they turn away from unknown faces. When family members are not around they, statistically, tend to turn towards faces of the same race, not from others, precisely because it is all about an innate biological survival mechanism : people of other races are more prone to kill the baby than people of the same race. So racism is biological. We need to accept it as it. What we can't accept is rudeness, bad behaviour and expressions of disdain to fellow human beings just because they happen to be of another race. And in this, what I can tell you is that the very people that find racism everywhere are quite very commonly the most racist in the most critical of circumstances (e.g. workplace etc.) while those accused of racism quite often show a humane face towards the very people they openly say they would like to avoid, driven by a sense of justice.
