The Allis Chalmers Speed Patrol was produced on the WC frame from somewhere near 1940 to 1950. They were all originally hand wheel operated with no hydraulics. The blade adjustment is not simple either as it is bolted in place, requiring a bit of creativity to reposition it for use. The moldboard is 10 1/2 feet in length and cuts a pretty wide swath up the driveway taking quite a lot of physical effort to raise and lower under load while moving forward.
Most of the time while in use, the operator would stand to give himself the needed leverage to operate the hand wheels and also for visibility, but some are comfortable to operate from the sitting position. To ensure smooth operation of the clutch it was fitted with two pedals connected to one clutch linkage....one for use while operating from the seat or sitting during transport, and the other for use in the standing position while actually moving product. At the same time, these rigs were fitted with individual hand brakes, to be used in either position, sitting or standing. No need to lock the brakes, the operator would just drop the blade to hold the tractor in place if he had to leave the platform for one reason or the other.
Its not a picnic to operate one of these machines but it sure is fun....as long as you're not doing it for a living. I spent a mere three hours on the Speed Patrol for this grading session and I guarantee the Son In Law on his Kubota L3301 with HST transmission, power steering and hydraulic blade control was much the better for wear by the time we finished !!
The motor definitely needs some attention. It needs a valve job and probably new set of rings would be good as well..at the minimum. But when I pull it down it will probably receive new liners and jugs as well. Either that or a good running WD45 motor will be installed. That would solve the rebuild issue and give it more power at the same time. Oh yeah, the gas tank has to be boiled out and properly sealed with a good sealant as well.
The Kubota L3301 needs no description....its smooth and ease of operation speaks volumes without words. It is a pleasure to use and for sure is quicker to turn around. For these duties, HST is the way to go. Backdragging with the bucket is a bonus while grading a half mile of roadway. The Son in Law normally has an 800 pound steel and concrete counterweight, so the tractor handled like normal with the heavy blade. The old blade is an early Danuser, but it is made to cut so well by the addition of the 300 to 400 pound solid steel bar across the rear. That was a loading dock counterweight I picked up one time while on an A/C service call in a commercial building. I saw a couple maintenance guys trying to muscle it into the dumpster so I offered to let them slip it in the back of my much lower service truck. Win-win for both parties !!
So here you got to see a combination of old technology and new technology interacting to achieve a common goal: a smooth roadbed. Though this was in no way a competition, the Allis is definitely a winner in the 'cool' category, but is limited to the duties seen in the video. The Kubota however is the winner overall simply because it literally has hundreds of additional functions that make it the much more desirable machine to a homeowner living in the woods. So If I had to choose between one or the other...I would still choose the Speed Patrol because I can borrow the SIL's Kubota anytime.... and HE buys the fuel.

Me either....(-: But for now, the Speed Patrol is sidelined with an exploded rear rim. It's non-repairable, so I'm on the search for a 10 x 24 rim for it now. So if you hear of some parts, please let me know.

My dad purchased an old Speed Patrol over 30 years ago. I remember my mother was not happy with that "ugly machine" sitting in the drive but he used it faithfully to maintain a 1/4 mile rock lane and it worked flawlessly. He passed away 3 years ago and the tractor has probably sat an additional couple of years prior to his passing. Once I get his old CA back in action, I plan on resurrecting the grader. Seeing you put yours to use reminded me a lot of my father. Makes me miss him even more!

Well Craig, that is a bittersweet comment, but one that makes me smile. I am glad it brought a few good memories of your late father. Good luck to you sir in getting it up and running. One word of advice, don't grease the handwheels too much or they won't hold their position well. It'll make more work for you holding them in place. Thank you for the awesome comment.

Yes, it does kinda get to your arms a little. The trick is to not grease the handwheels too much or they will not stay in position, and you find yourself using a foot on one and one hand on the other and steering with whichever hand is not doing something else. LOL. Seriously..that is the way it is. Thanks Ramon for the comment.

Yes, it is a little over half a mile from one end to the other. And it was hard packed too. That's why we work it in from the outside and crown the middle. She sure does sit down and grunt that's for sure and the chains make it able to push more than normal. Very shortly we will be hauling in 150 - 200 tons of crushed limestone very shortly. That'll be a good video....I hope. Thanks Chuck for the time you take watching and commenting.

My dad has one of those old Allis graders. About the same year model as yours. Brings back memories as a teenager. Dad had me grading the gravel road with it on our place. Standing up locking your legs against the steering wheel and using both hands rolling the leveling wheels. Fun times thinking about it now. Wasn't so fun when you dad had up on doing the work. Lol. Oh and I remember having to hand crank that thing sometimes. One of these days I will end up with it and hope to bring it back to life. Just thinking about it I heading to my parents place this weekend. Going to find out what year/model it is.

Well, I hope you get it back in running condition when the time comes. Maybe pull the plugs and dump some diesel fuel in every year or so....might make it easier for you. FYI, the serial number is stamped on the back of the left rear axle housing in a flat rectangular area. On the home place we had a pull type Adams hand wheel grader for grading the road beds on the farm. Thanks Jason for sharing the memories of another cool old machine.

Well it IS the first failure I've ever experienced in 30 plus years of gas tank coating. We've done motorcycles as well as tractors with no problems until the combination of an old product and the new 'engineered' fuel we have today. I think the alcohol mixture in the fuel played the most important part in dissolving the coating into the goo in the bottom. Modern fuel is engineered for modern fuel injection systems with different blends for summer and winter use. A lot of it is hygroscopic as well as it attracts moisture. Totally a different fuel from 30 or 40 years ago. I've got a few carbureted old motorcycles that cannot sit more than 30 days without a fuel related issue. Some of the fuel begins whats called 'phase separation' in a very short period unless additive is put in each gallon.

You could try my method as I mentioned some time ago. Get a 3 foot piece of 3/8th inch chain and put it in the tank and then add a quart of roofing nails. Mine on my '44' Massey came as clean as new. The Allis tank has a lip on the inside you might want to consider to getting them back out after the "shake rattle and roll" of the chain and nails. As I said it might not work as well in the Allis as it did in the "44. I get a lot of info from your videos and yes "don't always try what you do", as you have stated. It is mainly common sense usage before trying something.... I love Allis because they always start cold or hot weather...

Yes, I remember the suggestion. I have dumped in a coffee can of 5/8 or 3/4 nuts before then extracted them with a telescoping magnet though. The problem I have now on this one is the liner I used before turned to a gummy gunk all across the bottom of the tank. So I gotta get that outta there first. I have to find something to chemically cut it or liquify it. Then I might try the chain and nails trick. Thanks Jim for saying nice things about my silly videos. I am glad though that you find some of them entertaining. And I thank you again for your time. That reminds me, I have two 44's to get back up and running this summer. LOL

That 30 pound refrigerant jug is a bit misleading. It holds almost exactly 4 gallons of gas plus half can of seafoam. Takes it to the brim. I graded for just over three hours pretty solid running and it coughed and sputtered right near the end. So I burned 4 gallons and a few drops in a little over three hours. Of course at one point the choke linkage flipped closed and it started running so rich with black smoke, it literally set the exhaust on fire. I was too far away for the camera to see it and the son in law pulled out his cell real fast, but I got to the choke and wired it open too quick and the flames went out before he could get it on video....Looked almost like a hot rod tractor running alcohol on a night pull !! Hahaha...Thanks Bill for the visit today....and a teaser...I just picked up another tractor today. But I ain't gonna spoil it yet.....I have an unloading video coming up.

No, its just that I turned around so far away from the camera. That's a LOT of walking back and forth on the half mile driveway. Just a standard three point turn in a wide spot and on both ends of the drive I can just make a loop without backing at all. I don't attempt to turn it around in the narrow portions of the drive though..... THAT would be a bit tougher.

I'm thinking that the container having been opened had a lot to do with the failure. I just look at how much old machinery was destroyed for the war effort in the 40's so I'm just trying to do my part to preserve a portion of Americana for future generations. Oh...and I treat my 'condition' daily and heavily too !! Thanks for the humorous comment my friend. I'll try to drag out some more old stuff one of these days just for your entertainment....
